In today's video I follow up on my last purchase I made for my own watch collection a few weeks ago. I share 5 things I love and 5 things I loathe about the iconic Rolex Explorer automatic luxury watch after a few weeks of wrist time (Ref. 114270 36mm). I also give my initial impressions during an unboxing of the legendary Tudor Pelagos with the in-house movement.
To check out my comparison of the newer 39mm & 36mm version click here:

TGV, would you ever do a video on audio-related things? Your account was initially a "lifestyle" channel so in that vain, I feel like you could do a 'Top 5 speakers under xxx' or something. Might not get the same number of views but your expertise in the field would make it great content. Raf.

I LOVE my Pelagos. I wanted one since its original launch although I have the in-house addition. It's a great tool watch which to me just screams summer! Beautiful watch. Great clasp for diving. Long power reserve. The added bonus is I am going to be hosted by the AD I bought it from along with Tudor at tonight's British Lions vs All Blacks game!

The font used for the numerals of the Explorer is Eurostile, designed in the 1960s by Aldo Novarese. It was meant to embody modernity, with rounded corners like TV screens... Funnily enough it is still very much put to use in science fiction films, because it still conveys modernity to this day. The police like it too. Apart from the Explorer Rolex has used Eurostile on the GMT Master II, the Yachtmaster, and the Explorer II. You can also find it on many sub-dials other watch brands.

I love that it's just a watch. Just so simple and discreet. When I see someone having this you know they buy the watch for what it is not only for the Rolex logo, because mainstream people don't know it's a Rolex. Im in love with the design and I'm in love with the movement. Probably my favourite Rolex. Great video Tristano!

just got a new pelagos blue and the blue just makes me smile everyday. it's smooth and subtle yet is a real punch of color without being obnoxious. build quality is top notch and if you get a great deal like did then the value is unbeatable. movement has features that some rolexes don't have yet like the rotor bearings, 70 reserve etc. 2 things I would change is the 5 lines of text (although this stulidity seems to be inherfrom Rolex), and the crown is quite stiff to lock and unlock.

LOVE my blue Pelagos, and glad to see the landing on the channel! That matte royal is really unique, so sporty… Mine has spent the month of June on the integrated rubber strap, but I just switched over to a navy blue NATO, and man…does it make that royal pop! Just a fantastic summer watch, HIGHLY recommend this one gents ---

Sir TGV, I am a massive fan of your channel. Subbed for half a year now. saw almost all your vids and I must say I'm hooked. Now I can't stop checking out other people's ww specially at work. I have a question: if I want to check out a ww that is worn on a wrist, are there certain etiquettes involved? I mean I don't want to strain my eyes spying on their wrists. Do you think it's acceptable to hold it, pop it on your wrist, ask how much they got for it? You said from one of your vids that it's just bad form to ask if a ww is fake or not, now that's one thing. Just came to my mind while driving back from work. Anyways thank you MORE POWER Sir TGV!

I've been watching for a short time but I have to compliment you on your ability to create a way for young people like me to be introduced to the hobby in an inviting and welcoming manner. I would love to see how your watch journey has progressed from the seiko 5? Mine started out with fossils for a few years, then citizen for awhile as well. Then Victoronix. Which was the start of my love for automatics. Then steinhart. Then oris aquis....and I just got my first omega. It’s a hobby that progresses. And before u know it, you’ll be buying a watch for 3K when u thought all along those people that did that were “stupid.”

I bought the Pelagos last - the new one with the in-house moment. I actually went in to buy the blue one but at the last moment change my mind to the black. I've never looked back since. I was sold on the black Matt black finish giving extremely high contrast not to mention the added versatility of black.

Historical comment : Rolex Explorer was the watch Bond wore in Ian Flemings novels rather than the Submariner worn in the early films of the books. The watch looks much nicer on the wrist than it does on videos or in the box at dealers. Nice simple Rolex with the same movement as many non date Submariners, and 36mm version prices are rising as to find a really good little used one is getting more difficult.

An end game piece for me is the Patek Phillipe reference 5146 rose gold case and bracelet. I know it's a totally different universe between Rolex and Patek price wise, but if we're talking about the end game watch, I would like to hear if someone doesn't find it beautiful, it's as good in a formal occasion as it is in a casual.

*warning* potential ruin if you love the blue pelagos, and an interesting way to solve it: I showed a picture of the blue pelagos to a non-watch geek friend, who said "hey, that looks like a blue poker chip!" Immediately ruined, right? After a while though, my thought process was that the color is so vibrant and the lume is so clean and white that yeah, of course it looks like a poker chip but i don't care because it still looks insanely awesome

On the Everest heritage. It was actually Smiths who sponsored the successful 1953 expedition. So Hillary wore a Smiths to the summit. Or at least that's what he said in the advertising. Rolex sponsored the wrong expedition, the 1952 one that Norgay was on for which he was given the pre Explorer model. But, they say Norgay was wearing that Rolex when he reached the summit with Hillary! Much confusion on these points. Suggestions one or both of them had both Smiths and Rolexes. But then Rolex jumped on the success and brought out the Explorer we know now and Hillary got one.

Hey! That Pelagos is yummy! I am surprised...I think I like that more than any other Tudor I have seen! I was interested in the Bronze Black Bay, but like this a lot more!

I only hate one thing...the case to springbar distance is way too small, makes use of straps pain in the ass and curved springbars necessary...Rolex obviously had not in mind that people would like to wear it on something else than the metal bracelet

I’ve got a Parnis or one of those cheap Chinese a homage to the explorer but with a sterile dial ie just the indices and 3,6 and nine and the black dial it’s actually a really nice watch and I only paid 78 usd lol

Whilst it looks ok with any strap IMHO it always looks best on its own bracelet. I have tried mine on everything but I always come back to is bracelet

The Tudor's a proper tool watch but in my experience i've found that it's even too large for my big wrists. I'd describe myself as anti-rolex so why do i now own two of them lol. How can this be?

I'm trying to decide between the Orient Mako II and Ray II, anybody have any suggestions? I can't decide on what type of indices and hands i like better...

I agree; drilled lugs would have tied its hertage to eariler references. Changing the strap on the new 39 is diffciult because of the tight tolerances.

So the economy was bad back then and Rolex had to scrimp on the lum for some watches!! /s :D:D

regarding the explorer glad the numerals are gold and the lugs not drilled adds to the dressy look. Isn't useful as a tool watch in the modern day anyway. I'm constantly wiping the crystal on my tshirt agreed smudge magnet. shame sir Edmund didn't wear one on his everest trek

Surprised you kept the Rolex Explorer on the bracelet ahah :) Looking foward for the Pelagos review, don't know much about it Tristano for when more videos about lifestyle, other than watches? I understand with the growth of the channel you won't do it as much but once in a while (like once a month) would be nice! Keep up the good work!
