The Tudor Black Bay and Pelagos range are two watch models that are dominating the watch world, so I thought it would be fun to compare the Tudor Black Bay 58 Blue compared with the Tudor Pelagos Blue. These two watches are some of the best and most affordable dive watches.

Thanks for the review. Been looking at the Pelagos for months now, Procrastination is my middle name. Signed up for my blue Pelagos this morning . Nothing in stock at my Rolex shop here in Christchurch , New Zealand but , it''ll be here in a few days . Can't wait. I'm a happy man even though I haven't seen it yet. Stay safe over there in the UK.

Some 50+ yrs ago as a military combat diver , I was issued a Tudor submariner that I still have . Until the birth of dive computers, watches were obviously a critical peice of dive gear . Even now , when I go diving , the superstitious part of me makes a dive watch a must . I always use my trusty Rolex submariner as I'm comforted by the knowledge of a backup if batteries or some unforseen occurance should happen . A lesson well learned 50 yrs ago in combat dive school is " one is none ". The Tudor Pelegos looks to be a watch that could easily fulfill that secondary backup role. Anyway, great video as always. Keep 'em coming.

The Pelagos bracelet doesn't auto adjust for your wrist, but for a wet suit. The springs are too tight for it to "float" on your wrist. Believe it or not, I found that I could never get quite the right fit with the Pelagos. Always too tight or too loose. What they need more than the spring system, is a couple more notches before the spring system.

I'm literally deciding between these two right now! Perfect timing for this video, Adrian! I sold a black Pelagos a few years ago and it's the only watch I miss. I like the dimensions of BB 58, but the dial of the Pelagos is breathtaking... People won't like this, but the BB 58 just looks like a sub, basically, and the millions of other watches that have a similar aesthetic to the dial. The Pelagos is truly unique, even though we've seen those elements before in other watches of Tudor's past, never combined in that way with those materials. And you're right about versatility, not too important once you have more than one or two watches.

Ive had my Pelagos for 3 years. Its my go to watch for day to day. Still looks brand new and Im a plumber/gas fitter. I wear it daily and it doesnt look used at all. My Omega's and my Rolli would never put up with this use and abuse. The bracelet extension is great too. As the day gets on, my wrists get swelled up, the extension kicks in daily for comfort and makes it that much easier and better to wear for me. I dont think Ill ever sell it or trade it. It truly is an amazing watch.

I've had my BB58 for a few months now and couldn't be happier. I understand the dislike of the faux rivets, but I never notice them when the watch is on my wrist (and note: I stare at it constantly...). I swim with the watch. I take the watch to the beach, on camping trips, but also wear it with tailored clothing. Getting a Pelagos would just be too superfluous - the 58 is already a great weekender...

I have had my BB58 black for 2 weeks and I couldn’t agree more. Rivets don’t bother me and I don’t notice them either. Pelagos is too big for me... what I need is a bronze 58, I would happily add that to the collection.

I'm on my 4th week with my BB58 Blue, haven't taken it off my wrist since I got it on at the AD, it's that good. The rivets bother me to be honest, but once on the wrist you don't pay attention to them, unless when you do and then you think "argh... fking rivets tudor.. why..." and then I move on. It's running 0,3 seconds fast per 24 hours, VERY impressive. Measured over 1 week! It has been with me everywhere, hiking, in the pool and I'm currently building a completely new kitchen with it on my wrist. Have knocked it a few times, it has a few marks already, no bother, that's what a tool-watch is for and why I bought it. I'm not going to "baby" it like I do with my other Rolexes.

The only watch I own is a Pelagos LHD, presently on a canvas strap. I love it-and dive with it. I like it because it is all about form following function. No frippery. After two years as a daily beater, and I’m constantly in my garage building stuff, there isn’t a mark on the ceramic bezel. Man, it’s tough!

I was exactly considering between these two watches and always preferred the BB58 during my research. But you definitely have to try them in the store! The 58 just felt a bit too boring to me. The aluminium bezel and no crown guards doesn't make it rugged enough as I like to wear my watches daily for every occasion and they have to endure some scratches but still look good. Also I loved that the Pelagos uses titanium and has a sophisticated clasp and the lumed ceramic bezel. From the size the Pelagos suits my bigger wrist quite well so I just went for it spontaneously (the biggest purchase I ever made besides my car, lol).

"..Can't wear a watch on the right wrist - it doesn't feel natural..." This made me smile because I've just bought a Pelagos LHD - which is specifically designed for the right wrist :-D (Of course I know where Adrian is coming from - I'm not sure I'd want it as my only watch. But as part of a collection it adds something a little quirky and different to the mix. And it's a little beast of a watch too - an individually numbered series with some little nods to Tudor's vintage watches made for the French Navy in the 1960s and 70s.)

I feel the same.. I try wearing my watches on my right sometimes to give my left hand a break and i done feel the same level of comfort. If I don’t Alternate a bit I find my wrist area on my left hand starts to look paler compared to rest of my hand and skin starts to look a little smoother maybe.. especially in the summer ..
@King_Harrold
@King_Harrold 4 года назад
Hi, The LHD isn't designed specifically to be worn on the right wrist, that's just an added bonus. The idea is it's still worn on left wrist and the crown & guards don't dig in to the wrist when working with the watch on. Either way it's an awesome watch and on my list to buy next.

Black Bay 58 blue is a nice “dress” watch but the Pelagos and what it offers is in my opinion (and wrist size) a better all round watch. Titanium, adjustable clasp, ceramic bezel, bracelet (no faux rivets), amazing lume, and helium escape valve (not needed but cool to have and looks good). Ok so it’s £700 more expensive but you can buy a mint second hand one for around the same price as a new BB58. Better resale value too as second hand it’s already lost it’s retail premium. If you can’t afford a Rolex Submariner the BB58 is a quality cheap available alternative. If you already have a sub or similar buy the Pelagos. It’s delicious. KH

You hit the nail on the head Adrian! The Pelagos is the toughest Tudor. Dare I say, it’s tougher, in some ways than the Rolex submariner. It’s got better lume, goes deeper, etc. but, the bb58 blue is more versatile, and more attractive. I have all versions of the Pelagos, including the first eta version. I want a blue bb58.

SG M I think the whole series will be legendary, for sure. The first one, with the eta movement will likely be the transitory legend that achieves grail status.

It is for sure tougher than a Submariner. The modern Sub (and Sea-Dweller too) is really a quasi-dress watch nowadays. In some areas (like central London) you also put yourself at real risk of being violently robbed if you visibly wear a Rolex on the streets. (These days my Rolexes are in the safe 99% of the time, sad to say.)

Have the Pelagos and love it. Bb58 is super nice. Tried one on and really liked it. Once I’d put the Pelagos on that was it for me. It is quite chunky but wears ok if you don’t have very skinny wrists. The strap and clasp system is superb. It’s kind of like having a submariner that you don’t have to be too precious to wear. Fantastic watch IMO.

Great review! I agree, the Pelagos is a no nonsense divers watch. Like you said the Pelagos might not be that great when it comes to versatility, but nowadays there are people wearing s43's and James Cameron watches with dress shirts, so I don't think it really matters much. The Pelagos can do it all, be serious and fun like you said.

Hi Adrian, your channel and one other are the only two that i dont skip ads to show my support. Keep up the good work! There are less people wearing watches now than there were before. Those that do wear watches, there are more people that have 1 watch for all occasions than there are those that own 2 or more watches or watch collectors. To non-watch fans or non-watch lovers, Rolex are generally perceived as old man's watch where smart watches such as Apple watches are for younger generation. Most likely why Rolex's new OP line are so colorful and youthful. My question is: With less people wearing watches, Apple Watch taking a big slice in the market, Millenials and Gen Z not seeing the allure of mechanical watches, do you think within the next 20-30 years, most big watch houses will get consolidated or no longer exists?
@BarkandJack
@BarkandJack 4 года назад
Thanks a lot Paul. I really appreciate the support 🙌🏻 I’ve not heard of fewer people wearing watches. Last I heard was that the Apple Watch was having a positive impact on the traditional watch companies as it’s easier to sell a watch to someone who wears a watch than someone who doesn’t. And the Apple Watch us getting more people wearing watches. My information could be old though. It’s always sad when companies have to close, but only poorly run companies close. The good ones will survive. It’s an interesting thought though.

Although the Pelagos is considered the "Tool Watch" between the two...It's made out of Grade 2 Titanium which is MUCH softer then the 316L steel of the Black Bay. So the Pelagos has a soft case that will ding easily and the Black Bay has an Aluminium bezel insert that will scratch easily. Neither will make a good "Beater Watch".

BB58 for me please. I love the look of its dial, particularly the hour markers (but then I have a 1977 vintage Rolex Sub so I miss the metal outlining the [now sadly perished] lume). I just can’t get my head around the square hour markers on the Pelagos and it’s blue is a bit too bright for the wrist.

I really wish there was a bigger clamour for thinner watches rather than smaller diameter watches. I really don't mind any diameter between 39 and 44mm, but the *thickness* of watches like the Pelagos is what puts me off (but not entirely given how cool I think it looks). Also, I'd love to see you do a video or even just a photo set of the Blue BB on different strap colours and materials. The visual quality of your channel is brilliant.

I like the pelagos slightly better, however I agree the blackbay is more versatile. I wish the blackbay came in a variant with square or rectangle hour markers, I really dislike round markers. Good job as always.

The Pelagos is too large I think, if it was the size and height of the 58 then they would be into something.

Truly convinced myself after researching and watching videos/reviews that I was all in and excited for the blue pelagos... then I saw it in person at the AD. Its just uncomfortably plain and underwhelming. The square indices IRL are odd and apparently on occasion fall out inside the dial. It also strikes me as not really versatile. Diving then yes probably makes sense, any other situation then no. The LHD is the pelagos to go for and redeems the line. The BB58 could definitely be a one-watch solution, the black BB58 is by far one of the better looking watches around. Beats hands down some more expensive watches for design and versatility.

Both are beautiful & offer great value. I’ve owned a LHD then the blue but they are chunky timepieces. I’m waiting on the blue 58 that I’ll change to a rubber B tropical strap. I will never dive 200m so 58 is fine as my daily beater. If Tudor offered a smaller Pelagos I’d purchase immediately. I have a number of Rolex watches I don’t wear too often. I picked up a GO Sea Q 39mm & love it but I want a daily beater…

I'm lucky enough to have gotten a BB58 blue and a Pelagos LHD. While I love the BB58, the LHD has taken up basically all of my wrist time, it is just such a good tool watch, fantastic beater, and incredible dive watch. I take this Pelagos diving frequently and it already bears the scars of a watch much older... love it!

I purchased the black bay 58 blue with both Nato And Stainless that was on a waiting list. Im selling it unworn as I found it too small on my wrist but the Pelagos is a stunner and wished I had got it instead. Thank you David as you are always informative 👍

Both are really nice. I like the more saturated blue dial on the Pelegos but, the case size and thickness will be too big for me so probably the BB 58 Blue will be a better fit, in my opinion. Also, since I already have a Rolex Sub, should feel very similar. By the way, for many years, I had only one watch, the Sub, and it was my daily beater. I wore it and took it everywhere, including on vacation and swimming and snorkeling with it. The BB 58 Blue should be able to do the same.
