Hi! I'm Cathy, expat wife and mom, who has just arrived in Perth WA.
My Instagram:
/ @cath_botha
Today's video highlights 5 things I wish I had known before moving to the city - I cover some budgeting pointers, some social and community aspects we have encountered, activities for children in the city, (apart from the obvious AMAZING BEACHES that Perth has to offer.) I also share some fun facts about pets and animals in Perth.
I am passionate about sharing our experience of immigrating to a new country - in a hope it encourages others who have chosen to make the BIG move themselves, or are in the process of deciding if they should. I want to shed light on what life is like AFTER you catch your 1-way flight - all of the excitement, life lessons and adventures that follow.
I hope you enjoy this video - and would love for you to comment on what things you wish you had known before making your move!
Also please reach out if you have a topic you would like me to cover in my upcoming videos regarding life in Perth Australia or immigration (no legal stuff - just sharing our experience!!)
Subscribe with the link below - so that you are in the know when a new video gets uploaded.

Thanks for sharing a little bit of your day with me - catch you in the next one!

Nice to hear your positivity! Like many urban cities, Perth has had its fair share of challenges regarding homelessness and substance abuse. I'm glad that your family has not had too much exposure to that. Just be aware and mindful when you are in the CBD. Perth will get a little quieter as we head into the colder months, but you will absolutely love it here later in the year as it starts to warm up and activities start ramping up again. Bless and welcome x

Thanks @Gozzy Wozzy! We are so excited to see what summer holds as we LOVE the beach! Thank you for your words of welcome 😁 We have seen the dire straits of those who are struggling with Substance Abuse and have seen a few homeless folks on the roads. ☹️ so sad when there seems to be opportunity for everyone to find some kind of work if they choose to. Coming from SA- we have seen similar issues - unfortunately on a larger scale. Here's hoping we can all contribute to a better community for those in need!

As a Melbourne resident I haven’t yet been to Perth and found your video very informative - keep up the good work. One thing I must mention though Cathy - saying koala ‘bears’ is inaccurate and only said by tourists. They are Marsupials and are simply known as ‘koalas’. Enjoy your Aussies experiences and thanks for your positive videos.

Your community Facebook group is a good source for trades peoples recommendations too. There are many dodgy people out there so it pays not to leap into the first Google advert you find.

Hi Cathy, thank you this is so helpful, we are considering the move from NZ to Perth in 2024. Super nervous but excited about it. What about spiders and snakes?! my biggest fears!!! did Lula had to be in quarantine? how hard is to find rentals that allows pets? Many thansk!!
@cathybotha
@cathybotha Год назад
Hi Cele!! So glad you found the video helpful. There are spiders and snakes....but as we come from the bush in South Africa 🇿🇦 they don't scare us too much. Just like anything in nature- as long as you are weary and respectful you shouldn't have any problems. People also do fumigate/spray their homes and gardens - especially if you have pets or small children - to keep pests at bay. Alula did quarantine for 10days at the facility near Melbourne. The rental market is tough in general but Perth is a very per friendly city so there are pet friendly rentals out there.

From Perth live in America but looking to go back to Sydney, the car shortage is worldwide, Perth is great but longtime you need to live in the inner suburbs avoid the outer suburbs. There are reasons why many Brit’s and South Africans left imo your need to live central which means reducing space.
@westaussieeggs8867
@westaussieeggs8867 Год назад
I think outer suburbs are great, cleaner, quieter, schools for the kids, playgrounds. If you work in the city it is best to choose a suburb on the rail line. It takes no time to get central.

Hi, Perth has the four seasons so no, it’s not hot all year round. Summer can have some very hot days but it’s not humid like it is further north. We get much of our rain in winter.

In what suburbs do you guys live in Perth, and what neighborhoods would you recommend
@cathybotha
@cathybotha Год назад
Hi- thanks so much for your comment. Don't want to be too specific about where we live- just as a safety measure- but we are in the Northern Suburbs, about 10-15mins drive to the CBD. I think the "best" suburbs are very difficult to recommend because all of us have different interests, priorities and budgets and work locations etc. Please watch my video- "How to find your first rental in Perth" for more info on how to narrow down what suburbs would be best for you! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nDMAe2QBukI.html Good luck- Perth has some lovely suburbs to choose from

Hi! We are family of 3 (4yo child) moving to Perth from Malaysia (and Dubai prior) soon ! Looking at northern suburbs too! What do you think about Hillary’s, Duncraig, Carine? Maybe you can recommend some other places? We would like to have safe, family friendly area not far from the beach and restaurants with good schools and parks. Thank you in advance 😊

Cathy just some quick questions as I am planning to apply for PR. Why did you choose perth? Not any other province. Could you please share me how the medical insurance work over there?
@westaussieeggs8867
@westaussieeggs8867 Год назад
Medical insurace: once you get a permanent residence you get a tax funded Medicare, you pay part of your medical bills at the doctors, tests and x-rays, the rest is payed by government (ie your taxes), you can add private health insurance, to top that, I think it is about $200 a month for a family. The benefit of that is that you have a choice of specialist and you can stay in a private hospital. However, if you are seriously ill you will go to a teaching hospital which is public and you pay nothing. I know as I am looking after a friend who is getting treatment for cancer. Also you have to wait 12 months after you initiate your private insurance to be eligible for treatment in the private health sector. Hope that helps.

Perth has the best climate, great beaches, high wages and much cheaper housing than most capital cities. But the soil is just sand!!!

Is the car shortage in regards new cars or second hand cars as well?
@cathybotha
@cathybotha Год назад
Hi Rana. When we first got here it was in both second hand and new cars. Also second hand cars prices were pushed very high due to demand and lack of supply for new cars. Some dealers have started to now receive fuller shipments of new vehicles- hopefully second hand prices start to reflect this balance in demand. Good luck!!

Melbourne, Canberra or Adelaide are much better options.

Perth is where the work is for my husband at the moment. We look forward to exploring beautiful Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra - who knows where life might take us. For now though- we have been pleasantly surprised by WA, the natural beauty, laid-back lifestyle & rural feel are exactly the refresh we needed after our time in the Middle East.

@tinytempah09 Год назад
@amcleod6202 "Are much better options" is really subjective on personal preferences. May I ask why you think this is so? (Generally asking). I've lived in Perth my whole 30+ years of life and growing up I used to hate it because it was nothing like Melb/Syd etc (I've always wanted to move to Melb because of the busy hustle and bustle), but now in my older years, I absolutely love it and Perth/WA will always be where the heart is, for me. When COVID hit and our borders closed, it was an opportunity for us West Aussies to get in the 4WD and explore the state and wow, there is so much to WA than what you hear about the city itself. The vast stretch of STUNNING beaches you will find along our coast, some of the best in the world. From the south, Esperance all the way up to Exmouth, the white sand, clear blue waters, snorkelling with turtles, baby sharks, a plethora of marine life, oh and the sunsets 😍😍. You meet so many friendly people (locals and tourists) along the way, makes the whole experience truly unforgettable. And this is our backyard 😍 I'm planning to move to Cairns in May, to explore the Great Barrier Reef and the QLD coast (I like to chase the sun as you can probably tell), it's tropical, relaxed and it feels like a summer holiday all year round 😄 So really, it depends on what your interests are, hobbies, lifestyle, family situation, pets etc, that makes a place a "much better option". 😊
