All very important advice. I would add one thing about loading. Try to load EVENLY, from side to side and front to back, and especially never overload the REAR of an RV. Also, logically, black tanks have a small inner "lip", just below the exit of the tank. Therefore, when I empty my black tank, I first empty the bulk of it out, then I close the valve while letting the black tank flush to continue running. That way, almost all of what's below that inner "lip" will rise as water keeps pouring into the tank. For me, usually I have to do that only once but now and then, twice. And for the size of MY tank, each time I do this, it takes only 1 to 2 minutes. If you have a transparent elbow, you can see the point at which the water becomes continuously clear. Just don't walk away from the area while doing this, as you do not want to cause an unneeded problem by completely filling or overfilling the tank. Cheers.

I would add to this list, never try to remove your city water hookup without opening a faucet in the camper to release the pressure. It will not release! Also, never use your black tank flush with the black tank valve closed. Really there are so many nevers in camping that I could go on and on. Definitely a learning curve.

The discovery RV is a great RV. My family had a 2005 with the same exact paint job as yours. Not sure which year yours is, but it may even be the same year. The interior was different, but it lasted us since 2020 until we sold it because we didn’t need a 40 footer no longer. It took us everywhere and hardly ever had any serious things happen to it. Brings back good memories seeing yours🙏

On one of our camping trips last summer we saw an awning ripped entirely off its rig. It was left out in heavy rains. We don't even leave ours out overnight in nice weather---bad stuff can happen very quickly and it only takes a few seconds to close it up. Expensive repair and better safe than sorry! Not only that, but retract or extend the awning a little at a time. Ours is like the one in this video and was told by the dealer that doing it too quickly can damage those gas struts. You should give them time to retract or extend.

My eldest is autistic and prefers showering in the RV instead of public bath houses. Our grey tank fills quite quickly as a result (small RV, small tanks). Makes me very glad for the tub in our RV. Too small for adults to bathe in, but wonderful for containing overflow the first time we forgot to check how full the grey tank was before a shower. The overflow built up in the tub before it backflowed anywhere else, so my eldest simply turned off the water until I got the grey tank emptied.

I like to set up all at once….if I’m getting into the storage for electric and water, not much more work to just get the slinky hose set up. Also, it would be just my luck that there will be a freak rain storm that comes in when I need to dump before we leave.

That trail was bad enough the van following me was too close behind me. I never stopped but was heading up and out of ravine, canted too the right and they stopped thinking I was going over. They stalled had to back up and make a second run. All of us were trying to get around a highway closure. The map made it look like a surface road running parallel to the highway. About the truck stop issue , you made an honest mistake, I drove an 18 wheeler cross country for over 16 years, I have seen so many rv’s pull into the car fueling area parking are just to show there new Rv or mabe it was a gas rig . Some truck stops like Flying J have fueling and dump stations in the auto area, but not all . Just be sure you now your limits and don’t let your ego get the best off you . i will personally state that the not leveling is a major no no. my partner was houseless living in his old 1996 22 foot travel trailer and truck and this was something he had nevver been told or warned about. about 3 weeks ago he got a call from friends while he was at work that the trailer had went up in flames. this is a VERY serious detail not to forget people. we lost our service dog in a freeon fire ....on the upside thanks to him putting a call out to his local church. he is now the proud owner of a 2022 31 foot trailer fully paid off...and next year we are finally going to hit the road permanently

Not a full timer but I have done a lot of back country hunting in my class-A. I spend a week or two in some very remote areas mostly in northern Michigan. Most of the time the temperatures are near or below freezing. You make some good points but the big one that I think you could add is know your rig and your own capabilities. As you might imagine when camping like this you have to have a lot of gear and have to travel what I think you referred to as “non-friendly RV roads”. It’s not something new RVers should start out with but it is doable. Also as with many other things, don’t go alone and expect the unexpected.

To be honest, the black tank works just like a toilet. You don't use a dry toilet and then try to flush it without water. Now the toilet has the water in it and all of it goes down at the same time. Just like your black tank should. If you used the toilet dry and just left it open, you would end up with a big brown pile in it too.

I’ve been full-timing for about 5 months now. I always level my tow RV front to back. That’s a given. But I haven’t been in a situation where left to right was way off. So, I never bothered leveling left to right. IF I was in a place where it was way off, obviously I would. I see too many people wasting an enormous amount of time trying to get it perfect left to right and don’t get it. Thankfully I haven’t been in a situation that was way off and I won’t seek that perfection that so many look for.

My RV’s manual actually says that eyeballing it is fine. If you walk through the RV and it feels level to you, that’s good enough.

@@johnscott2746 wow I didn’t know that would be in a manual…have to check mine now out of curiosity. Good to know. Thanks for the response/tip!

My grandfather used a tennis ball to check if his tt was level. This was in the 60s.

One of the worst things that happened this year is someone posted a telephone video and everyone else had to follow, Phone videos are horrible to watch.

My black tank valve leaks so i can’t even leave the main valve open anymore for the grey tank. 😢

@@GratefulGlamper Fortunately it isn’t that big of a deal since we have 2 grey tanks, the bathroom and washing machine is 40 and the kitchen is 30 if I remember correctly. We already normally use our water tank in parks because our tankless water heater doesn’t work well if you have less than around 37-38 psi which unfortunately is pretty common in parks so we don’t bother anymore and just keep refilling our h2o periodically. The only really inconvenience is laundry day which tends to span 2 days because of the limited capacity of the washing machine. It’s pretty common for me to leave the main valve open while we do laundry and I’ll frequently dump the black tank and then rinse it after doing the laundry.

Same thing applies for your gray water tank…really! We made that mistake only once. Roaches will infest your RV via your gray water discharge.

You took a guitar but not a piano?! I'm crushed. A couple of other places that have scales are scrap yards and places that sell gravel etc. Ask if you can just weigh your rig. Worst they can say is no. I have problems parking my truck in a parking lot because most aren't made for trucks. So, yeah, don't get into tight spaces.
