My notes #1 hire a player that is also a coach not just a coach - needs to be a team player, can handle multiple roles, and can be subbed in or always playing #2 don’t hire someone just because you like them they actually have to be a good fit #3 don’t ignore red flags in the interview because it’s them trying their best - ask hard questions - don’t let need to hire override decision making process #4 hire from different places not just one place or your own community, use recruiters to help and different platforms - community is good for marketing and sales but finance, legal, ect don’t need to be part #5 only hire for potential if you have time and expertise to teach / level them up
Leila! I never ever write comments but this is all synchrony for me. You and Alex are hitting home with these videos! Exactly what I needed to hear right now. My husband and I created a startup and are at the revenue in this video BUT we need major clean up internal and currently building culture. Your a guiding light, thanks 🙏
...you win championships in the draft... So many mastery of hard and soft skills required to run a biz, let alone be the very best...Thanks for sharing your torment and lessons learned to those of us on the front lines and in the trenches.. Maximum blessings to you and Alex
Oh my God, I feel kinda ashamed to be finding myself within some of these 5 things! It's amazing how precisely you're describing my situation! Thank you!
Freaking excellent content... I despise hiring but it's my main focus right now, learning how to really find the 9/10 and get them onboard. We've done the "hire this 5/10 just because we know what we're getting" and it's a disaster every time.
You are by far my number 1 person to view right now. Literally like a personal mentor to me at this point. I know making these videos may be tpugh but please keep them coming🔥🔥🔥
I experienced #5 recently. I had 2 options and were considering hiring for potential. But then realised I don’t have the time to train someone and cannot trust fully their current skills. I went with the more experienced and “boring” person who can do the job. Then contracted the second person on smaller projects to actually see their skills and level.
I recently hired two people for the same role and both are great culture fits but one is WORLD'S ahead in terms of talent and speed. It was wild to be able to witness this in real-time. I like them both but one EARNED the role.
These are valid points, and you are correct the literature and the data are out there supporting what you are saying. Unfortunately, we are creatures of habit, and it seems as though the two clients you mention are unable to understand because they are 'successful', and they have been doing things a certain way to gain said 'success'. Long-term success is an ongoing process that involves continuous improvement and habits which you are a testament of. Currently working on my MBA (with plans to pursue CPA and a DBA) and this is a prime example of human nature and business. I am interested to see if and how you are able to convince them to change or at least try something different! Thank you for your videos! Huge fan of both you and your husband!!
Damn! This video is full of so much quality information it is ridiculous...I hope everyone who watches really takes the time to listen to this several times before they make their next hire...Thanks for all of the great information....
I've made at least 4 out of 5 of these mistakes and they play out exactly like Leila said. Will avoid hiring from the same pool of people / communities in the future!
Leila, big fan! What’s your take on building departments internally (like outbound sale calls, influencer marketing) VS outsourcing to a professional 3rd party provider (agency, professional telemarketing company etc)?
Awesome video! Everything you shared is so true. I can see those mistakes in my own hiring. And yes, people coming from corporate have a lot of difficulty understanding what its like working for or running a small business.
Great insights again! Have been watching videos from Leila's channel and found out my blind spots. Looking at the number of followers this channel has - its quite underrated.
I love watching your videos and I'm not even an entrepreneur or a manager lol I feel like I learn so much about what the startup I work at could do better. At the very least, these videos help me gain perspective. Who knows, maybe this info could be useful to me someday.. a girl can dream right? Lol
Excellent advice based on your experiences. Makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing this 🙏. Please do a video of a day or week in your life. ..your daily routine snippets at timeslots of each day with narration
1. 3:16 Don't let likeness blind you 2. 4:39 Don't hire people who are only coaches and not players 3. 6:56 Realize that what you are seeing in an interview is the best of that person. So don't ignore any red flags. 4.8:36 Don't hire from the same community of people you know. Make sure there is diversity. Exceptions include: coaches (they have to be your product specialists) and sales people (they have to believe in your product) 4.a. Realize that cold hiring is a skill you need to learn anyway because in the future you will need to be looking for talent everywhere 5. 12:46 Don't hire people simply because "they have potential" unless you have made a rational calculation that you know how to train them up and will have time to allocate for that. They should be able to tell you what they first 90 days on the job will look like, not the other way around
Tip #6. Don't 'give' them the job. Make them compete for the job. Group interviews are underated. "Why, out of all the people in this group, are you the best choice"?
One important lesson this is teaching me is that business is really about the long haul. You're going to keep having tougher and tougher problems. Are you ready for that?
Wow that was amazing. I got lots out of your video. I have a interview in 3 days time, I always get hired because I am liked and cool. But not always the right fit. Your a great youtuber. I look up to you. Do you have any pros and cons videos of changing jobs??
5:55 no comprpmize 6:55 what if you scared to say it? 7:35 what if you see red flags firing the interview? 8:10 what if it doesn’t feel right? 12:55 WHAT if potential, not exp?
I have done every mistake on your list. I would say though that it's difficult to not hire from your community if you live in a small town and you are a service based industry. In my industry, it's all the same pot to pick from for certain positions such as massage therapists, front desk personnel, medical assistants etc. Virtual businesses have more options for positions. 😊
I have hired over and over again for someone with potiential. I am so done with potential. I cringe in an interview when i ask them it they know a common softeare...ie quickbooks, excel etc wnd they tell me they are a fast learner and I specicially put these as required software skills and they say "I dont now the software but I am a fast learner." Not on my dime. Nope.
Likeness blind people... that's literally why we're in this current situation politically and socially lol. We want to like the people and not pay attention their actual performance.
