I buy second hand tires exclusively. I have a shop that I go to whenever I need tire work done and they've always been very transparent with me about how much wear I'm going to get out of the tires I'm buying. My family has saved a lot of money throughout the years doing this as well. I've also slept on my fair share of second hand mattresses because when you're broke and need a bed, you'll take what you can get.

Great points here! Secondhand stuff can really be super economical.

I agree with everything on your lists! Some things on my “always buy secondhand” are home decor (especially if you want something glass/crystal), mugs, and bookshelves. Shoes are one of those things I am trying to get into buying secondhand instead of new, but it is hard for me since I want to be sure it fits before I purchase it, and you don’t have as much room for error like you would have for a blouse.

Shoes are tough for me secondhand too! I've had several pairs where the soles looked fine, but have completely disintegrated on the first real use when out because they were probably stored in a hot garage and looked fine in the store but didn't work in reality.

Good to know about the lead paint and mattresses! 😳 I try not to buy second hand shoes anymore because they can be really bad for your back. Especially any type of exercise shoe!

I'm so torn on shoes! I've had some great secondhand pairs and some really bad secndhand pairs. It's so hit or miss!

For the not to buy I thought you would mention makeup. Sometimes I see makeup on depop and I’m like ooh why though 🤷🏼‍♀️ overall a great list!!
@GoingZeroWaste
@GoingZeroWaste 2 года назад
That's a good point! I can see if it's unopened and brand new. But if it was opened, secondhand makeup sounds like a very bad idea.

I used to think the same, but when you think of all the new releases of makeup, there is a lot. Sometimes people might buy a set or kit and get a product they won't use. Or, with all the subscription boxes, same thing. I really like Mercari for this! Personally, depending on the product, I don't mind if it's swatched. If I can wipe it down or I know the seller is clean and careful with their products, that makes a difference. Used lipglosses or mascaras? No! But a swatched bronzer or eyeshadow, if the pictures are good and truly there's little to no use, wipe/scrape/vodka spray down, get it for $10 instead of $40+! But truly there are so many "new" and sealed, not outdated products being sold at fractions of the retail. Read reviews of who you're buying from, ask questions if the description/pictures are lacking. :)

I have actually purchased secondhand makeup before and never had an issue! But it was face makeup. I wouldn’t buy eye makeup for example unless it was unused.

Actually new and vintage cookware and dishware have a lot of lead. I am glad you included the lead in dishes 1970 and before but it actually still in dishware now and you have to be really careful. Check out lead safe mama Tamara had children who were lead Posion and she works to educate and test products for consumers

You definitely have to be careful with what cookware you choose for sure. And especially avoiding Teflon coated cookware too.

Good list, well presented. I've been buying used since the early 80s, but there are exceptions on clothes: panties, socks, and maybe shoes depending on how worn because they're so important to back health. It used to be that shoes could be resoled, but not so much now. Friendly suggestion as a new subscriber. It would be helpful if you listed the items in your description, as I want to review them without listening again (but I'm not going to listen again). Time stamps, too. Gets this important info out more effectively, too. THANKS!

Thank you , Kathryn, that is a very good list, but I have to disagree with you on tech, we can't really do much as consumers about the burden of e-waste except not buying unnecessary items, but computers and phones are just made to not last very long, I used to buy second hand tech but I would struggle very much with the outdated functionality; companies like Fairphone are an interesting take on ethical resourcing, long lasting products and recyclable material that I think everyone should check out.

Another thing about electronics, nearly 100% can be recycled, yet so many people trash these items! That is insane to me. Even if your tech can’t be repaired, most of the parts can be reused in some way. Knowing this, my previous tech purchase will be the last time I buy new. Happy to say that (with the exception of underwear), I only buy used clothes now…not that I buy clothes that often.
@GoingZeroWaste
@GoingZeroWaste 2 года назад
So true! I agree, we should definitely be recycling our tech. I believe Best Buy will take and recycle just about anything tech related (from wires to TVs!).

I follow your Instagram and just recently found your RU-vid channel. Really like your content. It inspires me on what changes I can make to reduce waste and use what I have. I have a pair of snow shoes I got form my brother I never use. I'm thinking of putting them on Facebook marketplace.

My partner and I are about to buy our first house and therefore buy our first couch. For some reason (similar to mattresses), I am not interested in buying a used couch. The solution I've come up with so far is to buy a used futon frame and a new (eco-friendly) mattress for it. Any thoughts about couches/similar chairs in your furniture video would be greatly appreciated!
@GoingZeroWaste
@GoingZeroWaste 2 года назад
That's totally understandable, since couches also have fabric on them that can absorb a lot of stuff overtime. So I recommend doing what makes you feel most comfortable! If you have the time/money to refurbish a secondhand couch, it may be worth looking into!

hope all is going well in your new home. I live in the UK so it might be a bit different but you can get ex display and returned sofas/couches on Ebay and they are much cheaper than ordering but still new. good luck!

I bought used stainless steel cookware and I love it, but also bought new non stick because yes they don’t last forever and that’s something I would always buy new

Why, can't you bake in the steel pans? I paid 200€ for a serious Belgian made 5kg heavy steel frying pan, and besides being the perfect bang for a burglar, it will bake till I die and then some with offspring.
@pp598
@pp598 Год назад
Non-stick pans are coated with PFAS and create toxic fumes every time they are used, regardless if they're chipped or not. The manufacturing of these PFAS coatings are also extremely toxic, and the lifespan of non-stick pans are SHORT---and they still pollute once in the landfill. Non-toxic, made in USA pans are Solidteknics wrought iron pans that will last a lifetime, and Miriam's Earthen Cookware, which are lead-free clay. More info on non-stick coatings and the toxic legacy Dupont, the manufacturer of these coatings is leaving for the USA is the excellent documentary, The Devil We Know.

Is The Rock cookware considered Teflon? Ours is starting to peel 🥲
@richards5110
@richards5110 2 года назад
If it's the cookware I'm thinking of, then yes. Nonstick (teflon) coated aluminum cookware. Any cookware that is "peeling" is probably teflon.
@GoingZeroWaste
@GoingZeroWaste 2 года назад
If it's peeling, chances are it has a Teflon coating.

Yes! Some before and afters for sure. Everything is kind of a wreck because we're refinishing the walls. Removing wallpaper, replastering, sanding, sealing and then painting. It's been such a process.

Don't buy shoes secondhand. People's feet do funny things to shoes, so you always need to buy new shoes.

Don't buy non-stick cookwear AT ALL. Only steel/copper pans. If you can't bake in them, learn that first. Look up the latest PFAS research. A steel pan lasts beyond a lifetime. Your cloaked Dell promotion was pretty cringe. I totally agree on second hand tech, I only get it second hand, but if you want to praise Dell, do it on repairability and screw in a new battery yourself. That would be more genuine. My go-to brand for used tech is Apple. A MacMini 2009 (50€), A Macbook Pro 2013-1015 (200€), iPhone SE 2016 (35€), those are still our household workhorses running all modern software. Video editing a problem? Just stop doing 4K. 1080p is more than enough, and can be cut on pre 2010 machines fluently. Another never-buy-second-hand is refridgerators. The efficiency of new ones are usually so much better than a 5 year old one.

The earth belongs to Hayah, and all that fills it -- the world and those who dwell in it (Psalm 24:1). // SHLM & HaB (peace & love). The Name of the Creator is Hayah asher Hayah, as what He told Moshah (Exodus 3:14), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. There is a curse to the G-o-d name (Isaiah 65:11-12), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. All followers of the Messiah are to do the 7 appointed times (Leviticus 23), but no more animal sacrifices, following the Crucifixion of the Messiah. We are now of the order of MLK TSDQ (King, righteous), to Whom ABRaHM tithed. Ask the Messiah to be your personal Savior. He said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of Hayah (Romans 3:23). The wages for sin is death but the gift of ALaHYM is Everlasting Life through Messiah Yahushgh our Master (Romans 6:23). That if you confess with your mouth the Master Yahushgh and believe in your heart that ALaHYM raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (Romans 10:9). He Himself is an Atoning Offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for all the world (1 John 2:2). The Messiah died on the cross, & Resurrected three days later (presenting Himself as First Fruits to the Father). Please ask Him to be your Savior. He is the ONLY way to Everlasting Life.
