It is a shame, finding honest technicians is very hard in this rare occasions I wouldn’t mind buying parts from an honest mechanic because I would trust his judgment and could be sure he wouldn’t rip me off. I used to have a mechanic that was honest when he worked for someone else then he started his own shop and things started to turn weird until I caught him charging me for a radiator he didn’t replace, when I confronted him he told me the true and that ended a 12 years business relationship.

the upscriber Its usually 2.5 times. Next time you bring your own parts, instead of just paying for the labor pay the shops monthly expenses. It was around 20k at the last shop I worked at. I don't even want to know what it costs at the one in at now. They also don't get discounts as large as everyone seems to think. Even large corporate shops only get 10-20% off. Most I've heard of is 25%, that isn't that much when you consider the money that has to go out to keep parts in stock. They aren't making money sitting on a shelf.

yeah i have family that worked in a mechanic shop and that's how that stuff works they pretty much buy the part and multiply the item by 2.5 so if they bought a $100 item it would be $250 plus work hours witch most places will charge you based on what staff is in what area at the time so if your going in to a place and there are 3 people your going to be charged by person because they "inspected it" now he works on his own and tries to just get work hours and lets you buy your parts so if its wrong he'll send you back and get the right part so he looses no money.

Mechanics are in business to make money. Yes the parts will get marked up, but the mechanic will also warranty the labor and parts. One shop I worked in allowed customers to supply their own parts. Between the wrong parts, cheap defective parts or used parts that were being supplied cost me, the mechanic, money. Most mechanics are paid flat rate, so unnecessary steps cost us money. That being said, I have seen shops mark up parts unreasonably.

not just that if u bring your own part there is not guarantee on that part if it breaks on you. some people come and be like"you put this part on and it isn't working or blah blah blah" if its a part that they sourced and issue comes up they can easily replace the part again. yea they mark it up. my mechanic his shop he works for only does 3% I believe and it's not that they mark it up its that thru the shop they get parts at a discount from most part shops so they sell at retail when they got warehouse price and AGAIN it isn't a he'll of a lot. but that also depends on the mechanic

@rishijai 6 лет назад
This is the first scotty video I disagree on. I always bring my own parts since they are OEM and way superior than what the mechanic has. I bring synthetic motor oil while the mechanic tries to sell me old mineral oil of the incorrect viscosity. I tend to watch the mechanic from time to time as they can make mistakes leaving me with a car to tow. An example of this was the mechanic forgot to place the clip on the coolant hose causing my car to overheat on the highway. Even if the mechanic is skilled and trustworthy like Scotty, the junior mechanic he assigns to your car may not be.

I also don't agree with this video. Just a week ago I took my Corolla to the Firestone auto mechanics. He showed me online the part I needed (from Advanced Auto Parts located conveniently next door to this shop) and the price was $34.95. I don't have any clue about the quality of their parts though. But when he wrote up the quote, the part cost was $80.99 with labor at $110/hr. So if I would have walked next door, bought the part myself, it would have cost me $34.95. But the mechanic wanted $81 for the part. That's almost a 200% markup. I later cancelled the appointment, bought the OEM Toyota Part online for $33 and then paid a mechanic his hourly rate ($80) to install it. In the end, instead of paying $220, I paid $113 for the same work. So, yeah, I don't trust mechanics and their huge markups on parts and labor. It pays to shop around, get your own quality parts, and find a good mechanic to do the work for a reasonable price.
@personperson9591
@personperson9591 6 лет назад
Yeah, most shops nowadays don't use good parts, they use economy parts and never tell the customers. Scotty seems to be generalizing about himself, and doesn't realize that the flip in honest mechanics nowadays, most shops are about speed and nickle and diming to try and turn a profit, and thus many utilize less than ideal tactics to get to the profit center. Because when people need work, they often go with the cheapest shop, so to stay competitive, they all do a "race to the bottom" sort of thing, where quality takes a backseat to getting the lowest price-point. At the very, very least, mechanics tack on cost to either place the order or for the storage of the parts they order for you, it's standard markup process, mechanics aren't alone in it but it also means you as a consumer are paying a lot more for those same parts just because yet another middle-man is in the process.

@@00zero11b But as a mechanic the value you bring is your expertise and labor. Which you already charge for. Marking up parts is just a scummy hidden fee. If you want to charge for the time it took to order and handle the part that's fine, or even some sort of flat service fee to reflect the expertise it took to know which part to get. But a $200 part is not 100 times times more difficult to order than a $2 one. This is the same scummy stuff hospitals do with their $30 per aspirin gouging. The only justification for any sort of percentage based part markup is literally "because I can get away with it". Imagine that bill if it was transparent. $80 diagnostic $100 part cost $300 for 3 hours labor $400 more because I can And I cant even imagine its worth the the customer loss. When the customer looks through the bill, parts cost is the easiest thing for them to get mad about. Most people don't know how long a repair takes, or how much that labor is worth, but they can look up the market price for the parts you used in an instant. Then they have a nice easy piece of trivia to complain to their friends about. "Can you believe mechanic X charged me $500 for a $100 dollar part? I'll never go there again" "Wow, that's outrageous, I'll steer clear of that place"

So now today I texted and I told him "My brother is very rigid. He won't pay for the parts till I tell him what I need.". I bet this ugly mother had just made some very huge plans "Because Dona's gonna pay him $300 for him to 'fix' her car now!". HAh! All the markup in a mechanic's shop has to do with the fact that you're paying for speed and having someone other than yourself stand by the quality of the repair. You could procure your own parts and tools and probably make a few trips to the store for less money than you're paying a mechanic, but you don't want to put or feel you can't put the time in to do it yourself. And you know that if something goes wrong, you don't have someone to point a finger at. If you want to try to give your own parts, fine. But don't expect the mechanic to turn around and work into your schedule or stand by the repair.

I usually didnt mind too much as it was people's homes that I was in... not my shop... But these old hags took it to the extreme! While at lunch in our construction trailer one day, I looked up at the house at a newly installed window. Clear through the glass were two little old ladies... each with one of MY Stabila levels in hand that they took out of my carrying case... they were checking to make sure that everything was level!! We laughed our asses off. I later went into the house to ask if everyting was level enough. In the end, they were very happy, but they sure made us earn every penny. A job I'll never forget!

One day, her AC wasn't working, we know nothing about cars so we went to get it fixed, They said they would look the car over and when she came back they complained about all the extra stuff they came across while trying to fix the AC, the price was adding up big-time. They hadn't even started on the car yet cause they wanted to give her a heads up on the price. Well we had our uncle come into town and he is a great mechanic (we didn't go to him in the first place cause he was in a different state) he looked the car over, went on a shopping spree and fixed the car up for free, also saying that the only thing wrong was the AC. His mechanic said the entire radiator was busted and even a copy radiator would be costly, along with labour. Told her to tell him that she'd get back to him next day. Had it taken to my mechanic the next day and turned out it was a busted hose. Total cost of parts & labour was less than 20% of the cost of replacing the radiator (as originally mentioned) and that was because she used an original Lexus part.

Shop space, land taxes, electricity, costs of various equipment and repairs, tools, employees, service writers, accountants, receptionists, computers, computer software (yes, this costs $$). You think the mechanic gets this $200? Ever try running your own service business?
@ebayerr
@ebayerr 6 лет назад
Don't get me started on mechanics supplying the parts. They get a $50 part and then charge you $90 for it and show on the receipt the cost was $90 and pocket the $40. And then charge you 3 hours labor when it only takes and hour,because the "book" shows that's the amount of time it should be. Oh and if you supply your own part,they still charge you for the part because,"they lost a sale"
@baranUtube
@baranUtube 6 лет назад
ebayerr how else do you make money?? It's just how mechanics jobs work.
@OrionDakota
@OrionDakota 6 лет назад
Mechanic shops call that labor technique "flat rate." They make money by doing the job faster than the labor book calls for. I have no problem with it because it means if they take 15 hours on that job and the book calls for 8, then they charge for 8 and eat the loss. However I am a mobile mechanic myself and dont charge flat rate. It would be unfair to any mobile mechanic as flat rate labor hours are calculated using the "ideal circumstances" with a proper lift, every manufacturer specialty tool and every seal and gasket along the way. The job takes much longer without a lift, longer without wanting to remove/reseal every single part in the way and with generic removal tools and not the genuine manufacturer specific kind. I charge right in the middle from what the book says and how long it actually takes. From your position all you have to do is ask the shop when getting a quote whether they charge "by the hour" or "flat rate." This will help you avoid getting charged too much for small jobs but you might pay a bit more on the big ones. Food for thought. As far as the markup it might be valuable to know the price of the parts. It may very well be that the part supplied costs YOU 90 dollars if you called the parts store and bought it, but the shop has a business account and volume of sales with the parts store and gets a discount to 50. The 40 dollars is the shops money made on a part they earned a discount on. However mostly I see the shops charge 2 or 3 times the retail price and wont warranty even if you bought the part from the same place they would! I personally charge exactly the price of the part and get no special business discount. Also I give the part receipt to my customers so they know exactly what they are paying for. I am not a parts store and I make money exclusively on my LABOR. Hope my perspective provides you with some insight and helps you better differentiate between good and bad billing practices. Sorry for the page article! :P
@ebayerr
@ebayerr 6 лет назад
OrionDakota : I looked at the invoice I paid the shop,saw the part with the part number that they replaced,asked where they got the part from and called the part store and asked the cost of that part. It was less than half of what the shop charged me. Also,I had a shop replace an alternator on a 2004 Cavalier. I had a brand new serpentine belt that I asked them to put back on instead of the old one. They then charged me for the price of a new serpentine belt,even though I supplied it and when I asked them what was up with that,they said,"Oh we lost the "sale" of the belt,so we charged you for it".
@OrionDakota
@OrionDakota 6 лет назад
Theres no excuse either for charging a customer more than they can get the part from the same supplier. some people say its to "pay for the shops warranty" and I respectfully call BULLSHIT. The LABOR you pay includes the warranty on the work. The warranty on the work only doesnt apply if they dont know where you got the part and dont trust the brand. Thats a "mechanic shop beware" type thing and why they choose carefully who to buy their parts for because they know damn well they eat the cost of labor if they picked a part that fails in a month. Sounds like some shiesty bullshit my old boss would do and the entire reason I left his employ. Shops are bleeding money in every direction and the only way manufacturers try to stop this is designing everything to need a specialty tool. Then the aftermarket duplicates their tool and charges 50 bucks for a tool the dealer wants 300 for. They keep unloading more and more bullets into their own feet to try to make a quick buck and loose in the long run. I make a crapton of business running my own mobile auto repair because its pretty easy to not scam people and the business floods in. I dont need to scam people because I make good money with the volume. Something businesses keep forgetting...

Christina Clabough Exactly. Where i'm from they have contract with biggest local supplier, they buy for half the catalog price and resell for full. On simple jobs, like exhaust replacement, they even offer the work free of charge: They're happy, because the 30 min. job gets more than covered by the price of parts and regular uninformed customer is happy because he got it for "free" :-)

@Sseltraeh89
@Sseltraeh89 6 лет назад
Caleb Niederhofer Well, normally it would be okay, but where i'm from, there is one "but": The catalog pricing of the local biggest supplier is actually unreasonably high, low-end parts being 10-20% more expensive than comparable parts of premium brands in other stores. Not long ago one local mechanic suggested i should get my front brakes done and made calculation for me ( i'm converting to USD from local currency): 2 rotors, 55 usd each + front pads, set for 35. All their cheapest parts from not very reputable Polish manufacturer (and i would be mad, getting the worst option for something as important as brakes). So i went and ordered the parts from another shop, rotors for 44 usd each and pads for 30, all made by Brembo (!) and replaced them myself. And i have to mention i didn't even look for the cheapest shop around, just for the fastest to deliver. So while local mechanics might not be scamers, the supplier certainly is, and by having contract with it, they basically scam their customers, whether they realize it or not.

Lance Tech You're wrong. If the mechanic puts the cheap parts you bring in to him to install and those parts fail causing an accident and injury, or death, the mechanic is liable. This isn't something that's unheard of. There's a reason this policy is in place. It isn't as easy as taking a look at a part and telling if it's quality or not. You'd never be able to tell without running them through stress tests that test the strength and durability of the part and materials they're made of, which of course costs money and destroys the part since it is tested to it's limits to see whether it will hold up to 100k+ miles on the road. That's what quality parts manufacturers do when they design the parts for your vehicle whether oem or replacement. I doubt that much investment is in those knock off parts.

I strongly disagree with the point about bringing your own parts. Mechanics generally have their own suppliers; and they may not have the part that you (the customer) want to be properly installed. These days, with dealers gouging on service and parts, there are plenty of excellent sources for quality parts that exceed OEM standards; and which provide more value to the customer. Often, these parts are far cheaper and of higher quality than OEM parts. Savvy customers do their homework/research; know which parts to order; and assume the responsibility in the event that these part(s) fail. They're also willing to slide their mechanic some extra $$$ or a gift, every now and then, as a token of gratitude. Savvy customers may have the knowledge to _'assist'_ in procuring the correct parts (especially if they are performance parts); however, they often lack the tool, equipment and workspace to do a proper job safely. A good mechanic will be able to tell the difference between a savvy customer and someone who doesn't know what the hell they're talking about. A good example of what I'm talking about: My 2006 Chrysler 300C 5.7L... my favourite car of all the cars I've owned! It suffered from two nagging problems... unless you used the right parts. 1) The bushings on the lower control arms would frequently crack, or wear out prematurely. Often taking only 5k-15k kilometers, before you'd suddenly feel a great bump and knock at every tiny crevice in the road. On the 300C, this meant replacing the lower control arms (TIP: always replace both, even if only one goes on you. It costs less, in the long run.) Well, I learned that replacing the lower control arms with SRT8 parts wasn't that much more expensive; and it would resolve the problem, permanently! Unfortunately, it took me a while to find a good mechanic, willing to do the work; and he worked full time at a Chrysler dealer, where they did this regularly! Before that, I had to argue with prospective mechanics, who insisted on using _"the OEM replacement parts for my car's VIN."_ They simply refused to accept the reality that the OEM parts were inferior. Yes, I used OEM lower control arms, but for an SRT8 300C... which were heavy duty; and built to withstand more stress. 2) Brakes! Wow! OEM brakes are OK, but if you drive up and down hills and mountains... say... while you're on a vacation road trip... the brakes tend to heat up and cool down a lot. Result = Warped rotors!!!! This in turn leads to premature wearing of the pads, because you now end up driving all over hell's creation, until you get back home. I learned that regardless of which car you purchase, the brake system is designed to meet a *'minimum standard,'* which, when exceeded, results in early wear/failure. They do this, so that you'll bring your car in for service more often. $$$$ Solution: Do your research. In most cases, cross-drilled and slotted rotors can be purchased for less than the dealer would charge for the OEM rotors; and the use of ceramic brake pads (with the cross-drilled and slotted rotors), while nominally more expensive to purchase, result in much better braking distance, far less brake fade, far less brake dust, far fewer trips to your mechanic to replace brake pads/rotors. Essentially, you save money in the long run! I encountered the same idiotic robotic desire by some mechanics to use OEM oarts, according to the VIN. Do your homework, folks; and when you approach your mechanic to ask him/her to replace install the parts you purchased, ask them nicely... respectfully. In fact, don't be afraid to consult with your mechanic, before you purchase parts. They might have some extra info for you. If they flat our refuse to install parts that you purchased, maybe its time to end the relationship and find a better mechanic!

It was a GM part that Toyota stupidly used in their North American built Corollas. If you get a good one they'll last ages, but once they fail they never last once rebuilt. I got 5-10k miles out of each rebuilt one. Brought a dead one into Advance Auto for a warranty swap, set it on the counter, and the guy looked at it and said "Buick?" Sadly the much more robust Denso alternator that was used in cars with the 1.6L engine took a different belt than the Delco and couldn't be easily swapped in without making other changes.

It would not bother me if somebody wants to watch me do my work, so as to learn about such things. However, it really depends on who. Some people might actually be helpful or at least stay out of the way, and do not ask stupid questions. Or be a friend who does not seem to be "breathing down one's neck." Hey, that is how many people learn about cars, by watching friends do work on cars. But then, I am not a car mechanic, so what do I know? I really do not like to be in the dark about what was done to fix it, because maybe I might have to fix it the next time, and what do I know, if I saw nothing? I like to watch if I can. But it can also be useful to request that they keep the old part, as I like to look at it and see if possible, what went wrong with it, or to at least see what the part even looks like. Thanks to RU-vid, often we can look over somebody's shoulder, without having to be in the way, without having to look over somebody's shoulder.

Its never happened to me. I just had a friend recently who needed a repair. She's a single mom and doesn't have a lot of money. The part to be replaced was quoted at $450 on the mechanic's bill. I found the same exact part, same manufacturer, for $150 at a local auto parts store. The mechanic was happy to put it on for her and said he was surprised at the price difference. Most mechanics use the same parts dealer all the time and never check prices. When those prices change they very well might not notice. If you really want to protect, tell the mechanic where the better price is. If he wont get the part from there, change mechanics. In my case, usually its a special part such as an upgraded brake rotor or something that I'm bringing in.

The reason many mechanics don't want you buying your own parts, is because they mark the price of the parts up, and make money on them, along with the labor. I used to date a girl and fixed her car when it needed repairs, but was out of town for a few days, so she took it to a brake and muffler shop and had them put new brake pads on the front. Later she showed me the bill they charged her, and they itemized the labor and parts. Under parts they wrote, brake pads 150 dollars. The same brake pads sell at auto zone for 15 dollars a set. Crap like this is why I learned how to fix my own cars years ago. In Oklahoma the government regulates how much mechanics can mark up parts, and this muffler shop actually violated the law, but she didn't want to go back and demand a refund. I'm not saying Scotty does this practice, but many mechanics do mark up parts.
