Open handed much easier accomplished with a V-Drums kit. He definitely inspired me to get my left hand groove game to a better place. Left handed hihat takes dedication to get together. V drums double hihat kits are very fun to play with.

Another great video! I never thought I could have so much fun with my metronome! We're gonna be spending a lot more quality time together. And when the wife complains that I've been ignoring her in favor of you know who and she tells me to sleep on the couch...at least I won't be sleeping alone!:)...I'm kidding...I'm not married...I'm a drummer not an idiot!:)

Hello there Harry! David here. Have you ever heard about Bill Bachman? I've watched two of your videos so far and although your set-up is quite unique I can see some similarities to Mr Bachman's. Awesome drumming also, nice job with the metric modulations. My favorite one as of now is playing a triplet groove with the first sixteenth of a 4/4 groove. Keep up the good work!

I'm a musician mostly away from teachers. I learned the flute in school but thats about it. I started playing the drums in my church and i'm good enough to keep the beat on most of their music but obviously I want to get better. the problem is I dont understand alot of the vocabulary that belongs to percussion so it's hard to understand what he means.. a lot of the stuff I feel out but I wish I could understand. He's explaining well and I love this channel.. can somebody help me out with translating what he means with displacing and how he's explaining the time signatures?

(im kinda late) he means to play with the click of the metronome but with the click not on 1, 2, 3, and 4. like at 1:37 he is feeling each click as the upbeat which makes playing along with the metronome not boring (like vegetables). With the "metric modulation" he is saying to play while feeling the click in a different rhythm such as every 3rd 16th note but remain consistent with the click.
@boarhead5573
@boarhead5573 6 лет назад
+Nick Lobato But if he takes the click as the 3rd 16th note it would transform to the up beat as well theoretically. But that's not what he actually plays in the example afterwards, so I got confused. Or didn't I understand what he meant exactly?
@eggaiug

@@boarhead5573 He using the click to keep time, but it doesn't matter how it sounds. Think of it like another percussionist playing along with you and you have to keep time with him/her

Another advice is to use metronome at very slow beat. It is "easy" to speed up, but it is more difficult to slow down and keeping a groove, for instance, at 30bpm.

Playing with a metronome is hard as fuck. I play 3 years guitar and even though I learned the technical part ( sweeps harmonics tapping cross alt picking, economy even every fucking chord and good amount of speed 160ish-170ish) the rythm part is still killing me and making me wanting to quit.

Wait, what? I shouldn't be kissing my grandmother? But it's on the cheek. Dude ! I just started practicing to a click track. I play in a praise and worship band in the church (cue the heavenly angel string and wind chime chord), and for some unknown reason (I watched a work shop video where they advised it might be a good idea to start using one) thought I would start to using a metronome because "the rest of the band" tends to start rushing and making me rush in the process to keep up. Why do they NOT listen to the drummer when he says "slow down, you're rushing things"? I found this video to be insightful and very interesting to say the least. I believe this is going to help a lot. Thanks for posting. I think I am becoming addicted to your video's, I can't stop watching.

Harry!!!! Dude!!! Your tutorials are short precise and FUNNY!!!! Really like the attitude.Thanks dude. I have a problem to move from the pad to the snare . my fills and rudiments sound ok on the fills, but when I move them to a snare, the sticks bounce haywire, bouncing every possible directions(unlike many drummers who complain having less bounce while moving from pads). Now one thing I have noticed is if I cover the snare head with even a thin cloth then the bounce resembles same as my pads. so could you give me some advice please.... I have tried different snares with different types of tuning . Also tried different pads

+Amlan Das The question that comes to mind for me: Do you want to rock out at the drum pads, or do you want to rock out at the drums? If you want to rock out at the drums, practice the drums and EFF the pad! ...sorry if that was overly alpha; the pad and I never got along so I'm unfairly lashing out at it. Eff the pad though.

Hi Harry, thanks for your great videos. I noticed you have a Roland TD30 there.. what's your review on it? Do you like it, and do you think they have any pitfalls if any?
@harrymiree
@harrymiree 8 лет назад
+Commit I love the TD30KV. I do play MIDI drums on folks' records quite a bit with it and I'm still finding it doesn't interpret open versus closed hats (and most importantly, the stuff in between) as accurately as I'd like it to for the $8,000. Most of my friends in the electric world solve this by just using acoustic hats. Everything else is perfect. I'm currently experimenting with Pearl's electronics on a quest to match the Roland quality for half the cost or less. Maybe I can share results a little further down the road. Chee'z mate

Harry, when not on tour, how many hours average do you spend practicing?
@harrymiree
@harrymiree 10 лет назад
Dude! My arm complications don't quite make for a model answer... I usually need about 7 days of no-drumming-at-all when I come off the road just to get my arm back to functionality. But assuming good health, my attitude has always been to play when the urge takes over and makes me really *want* to play; and as for the times where the desire just isn't there, I know I need to leave the kit for a bit and find something that will excite me to get back and play. I'm personally super against playing out of obligation, like drumming is some bitter pill you have to reluctantly take every day because "it's good for you". Seems like a pretty quick way to take the fun out of something that should be cool. The metronome, of course, is the infamous mascot for the things we don't want to do on the drums, so this video is really the story of the ways I changed my relationship with the metronome that made it fun for me; that made me *want* to jam to a click....dig?!
@FONO63
@FONO63 10 лет назад
Harry Miree Yeah it seems that you have to find that sweet spot between discipline but still mantaining the fun. I do think that discipline comes first in the early stages of development and then you have to be clever so you work better and more efficient without burning out for a long period of time, which would be catastrophic. This metronome tips definitely shows what you are talking about, being smart to turn something that might be a bit cumbersome into something that is fun and helpful for you playing. Although I am currently not playing drums, I always get inspired by watching videos of people that are pushing it to the next level, like yourself. So keep it Harry and thanks for the response!
