MoJo & Mindy Jo - Episode 4!
I brought home our 1957 Cessna Skylane (AKA MoJo) from its first annual inspection. After going through the full process, here are 5 key takeaways that I learned from the annual inspection.
Skip Ahead:
3:58 - Start of annual inspection tips
4:17 - #1 First one is usually expensive
6:54 - #2 Shop matters
8:51 - #3 Schedule early
9:21 - #4 Make a squawk list, prices of some items
11:45 - #5 Check it over before leaving

Mindy, THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I watched this video back in July before I bought my first airplane (a 1968 Piper Cherokee 180). Because of your video, I planned an immediate $15K in my budget over and above the purchase price to cover the first annual. Fast forward to today, my plane has been in the shop for annual for two weeks and the reply I got today when I asked about stopping in tomorrow to talk through what they've found so far was "Yes, please do stop in as we have a lot going on with your airplane". IDK what exactly yet or what the bill will be but I'm glad I planned for a big bill. (He did confirm nothing catastrophic, just a "large project" with some potentially deferrable items).

Bittersweet comment! I am happy you planned high for your annual but bummed to hear that it may be expensive for you. It happens time to time and hopefully....not all the time :D Enjoy your new plane!! Congrats!

@@Schmiiindy well $10,500 was the final so not as bad as I feared but I got a lot for that money too. Not sure you really care but I did put together a quick run-through after I stirred up some controversy when I posted the final number to a pilot group. Gave you credit for this video that definitely saved me some serious stress. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gAoCMrXMtrg.html

I can't wait to see what you do with this plane, as far as nav upgrades etc. are concerned. Appreciating the classic styling but bringing MoJo into the 21st century is a mouth watering prospect...

Mojo sounds AMAZING! Nice work you two - Some GREAT insights, as always! For those of you watching this and going "holy crap!" at the initial annual cost, it's just like owning anything else. When things need to get fixed, fix them and fix them right. Your safety and future annuals will thank you for it. (I hear so many times "I got a guy that can do it cheaper"... cheaper isn't better. Anyway, I can't WAIT to see you two in the coming months. Until then, blue skies to y'all!!! :)

Great video. My 177 goes in for annual this week. 🤞 To expand on your point about the first flight after major maintenance: I perform it solo, day, VFR orbiting over my mechanic’s field at a safe altitude in the event my engine quits. During the orbits, I check that everything is working properly in flight (vs. just on the ground). Then I land back at the mechanic’s field, open the cowling and take a good look around one last time before flying home. Too many people have taken off into low IFR after completing major maintenance and payed with their lives…

Outstanding and very nice video! Yes.. my "new to me" was my third plane I've owned. OMG.. the things prior owner AND mechanic screwed up: incorrectly indexed prop (shame!), actually the wrong L magneto (for a Lycoming, not my Continental), "indoor" house carpet interior, broken window latches and window hold open arms missing, and a low cylinder, no baffels in muffler, leaky primer, and an ignition switch where the key could come out in any position. $7K on that annual! And the prior owner was an A/P!!!!

Well I hope ours is cheap since we bought the plane in August after the annual we have replaced the generator to an alternator.. Upgraded the wires and replaced the battery.. Did the brakes, replace the direction indicator, shimmy damper, the magnetos, vacuum pump hobs meter repair, plugs and wires.. Learned our lesson do not buy if plane has sat for a couple years

Loved the wing wang. Wow, where you live is very nice and great house and hanger. You know, for a plane that age that price is not bad. We never bought a used plane, so our annuals were not that much on the 310. But our service was more than yours due to the twin engines. All great tips.

That was all very helpful info, Mindy! My first annual is coming up in May and this will help a lot. Do you recommend doing several upgrades all at once during annual? I don’t want to overload the mechanic but it seems it would be the best way to save money.
@Schmiiindy
@Schmiiindy 2 года назад
Thanks! If you have the budget, I’d definitely get everything you want done all at the same time! It’s going to be pulled apart anyways. And why have them possibly repair or even spend labor hours checking something that you know you’re going to replace

Beautiful airplane you have! I took my PA28 to a big shop that works on King Airs and other larger planes. They also do government contract work. For insurance reasons they don't cut corners. The annual was higher than average, but they were extremely thorough. I like that. Be careful with cheaper, barnyard one man shops. Owning airplanes is expensive, especially today. If you don't have the funds, don't buy one.
@Schmiiindy
@Schmiiindy 2 года назад
Exactly! We’re on the same page. Neighbors and friends said “we’ll all help you, let’s save you money”. But I sleep better at night knowing this plane was looked over by someone unbiased and not trying to save me a dollar but rather fix what’s broken.

Wow! I have a friend that bought a flying Comanche 250. First annual was 15K. Should get better from hear. Have you guys thought about owner assist annuals. We live in a flyin community also with an IA as a neighbor. I just take it all apart and he comes over to look at it. The plane is also an experimental RV-10 so I can do a lot of work on it myself. No matter what the cost, I still never regret having my own plane at my house. Have fun traveling with Kevin and Mojo.

Yeah, you have a little more flexibility with the RV! But no, I have a more than full time job so unfortunately I’m not a good candidate for something like that. I’d rather spend my little off time flying it or tending to other things 😅 Maybe one day! Would love to learn.

@Schmiiindy
@Schmiiindy 2 года назад
Well that’s what a prebuy is- it’s a quick look to verify there are no major issues. It’s not meant to be in depth or else they’d call it an annual! Lol Brake upgrades was our own choice and was a high ticket item. The rest was a lot of little things added up…most of which were optional to fix. The only unforeseen big thing that was an airworthy item was the cracked carb box

How's the 182 working out for you guys? Just rewatching some of these vids and they are a pretty good representation of GA ownership costs, expenses and hassles. I prefer to have someone go do a thorough inspection and negotiate the price down for any repairs, assuming the asking is high enough to warrant this. Bought a 140 and a 185 in the cray cray market and neither one of them needed anything special at 1st annual. For any normal person it is necessary to do a lot of your own maintenance with appropriate supervision. Otherwise it is cost prohibitive for most folks to own an airplane.
