This was an awesome analysis. My take: There are 2 types of limpers: 1) limp-call type and 2) limp-raise type. Against limp-call type, I agree, just use your normal raising range from that position and use linear range. They never have a polarized limp-raise range in order to exploit you. Against type 2 (limp-reraise type), limp behind with hands that have implied odds, like JJ-, some suited connectors in late position, or A5s. But against both types, you should always raise AQo, KQo, KJo, AJo. Those are the hands that block their limp-raise range (AA-QQ, AK), and also they raise you can fold and save a lot of money that you could lose if you call and hit a top pair. But if they call with QT, K9, K5 etc, it is good for you because you will have them dominated a lot, while if you raise with a polarized hand like J5s, you will be dominated a lot. So against limpers never ever use a polarized raising range.

It is easy to remember 1) against a linear range, for example, their linear 3b range, you use polarized re-raise range In order to make them fold a better hand with your junk hand, for example, they 3b with AJ and you reraise with A2 and they fold. Or you make them fold KT with your Q9s. That is the reason a lot of GTO 4b range against blinds have those type of hands in their 4 betting range (K8s, Q9s, K5s). They block strong pairs and will make the opponent fold a hand with decent equity against you. 2) against polarized rasing range you use linear reraising range. If they call you will have them dominated, but if they re-re-raise you just get away and be happy that you potentially saved a lot of money that you could lose if you hit something on the flop!

I got into a spot with KK last night In under the gun plus one in a 2/5 game. Utg raised to $20 preflop and I called. Using this strategy made me the maximum and the hand really changed my night. Won a huge pot!

Hi Jon. Your info is priceless. Now I look at the game differently. A-5 use to be a nit play and easy fold no matter what position I am in. Now its game time. I three bet and took down a 300$ pot! @The Button.

id love to play all these noobs that say limping is bad. I limp reraise limp call but rarely limp fold. Thing is my limp range is better then most pro raise ranges. SO I know when im limping im ahead I just let aggro players bet and I call to the river crushing them.

If I know there's an aggressive player after me who is always raising and re-raising, I'd rather limp from the middle position with AJ or AQoff and call to see the flop cheaper than call a re-raise and see the flop I may not like at all against some pocket pair. Most of players I played with would have fold pre-flop only to all in and going all in too often with some AXs may cost at some point the whole stack since they find themselves with some KK against my AQ, for example

That's why I like my casino in Cherokee N.C. the rake is low. 10% with a 7 dollar max post flop. The pot can be huge pre-flop. But, no flop, no drop.

I was there playing 1/2 last week. I won 50 and seen the car counting cars did. I seen it on tv then just happened to see it while at the casino. Thought that was cool. I thought the rake was high. Here at tampa hard rock its $5 max rake.

Thanks that was really interesting. And it answers a bit of a questioning I had lately. I started to track my vpip/pfr/3b stats for live games. Even though I don't have a huge sample yet (1000-1500 hands) I found out that my pfr is around half my vpip. As opposed to when i used to play online, was way closer (like 22/18 or so). Maybe the difference between online stats and live stats could be explained by the fact that there are more players limping in live games(?) (I'm a reg-rec 1/2) I guess I don't have to feel bad anymore about the gap I have between my vpip and pfr ;)

yes indeed - with all that limping going on you're often getting insane odds to complete the small blind with all manner of stuff, limp along from the button with a wide range etc., even call a min-raise from the big blind with stuff you'd usually fold.

Open limping is bad. But if someone else makes that mistake limping behind wide is fine.

i'm listeneing to this, and in tournament strategy it's good, in cash strategy it's bad. i'm a person i think makes an excellent transition between cash and tourneys and even play them in parallel when online. i prefer live cash so only play low limit stuff online. just wanted to point out imo this video straddles the fine line between cash and tourneys. good vid though. i agree on most points.

however, i'm a limper punisher. i will almost always 4x bet with 3 or more limpers in behind. a lot of the time i won't even bother looking at my cards when 4xing to let folks know to not limp to me

If I know the guy from BB is a reg and he raises every hand, I limp IP and re-raise him preflop quite a lot. Or I just call and see the flop. If the table is passive and likes to limp 6 ppl in the pot, I don't mind either since it's low stakes game and people come to spend their time. They don't care about the rake per 100 hands etc. The higher the stakes are, the less you would see so many limpers. Maybe some superstong hands only are limping or minraising. Limp is great at tournaments since the rake is already paid. It is fine for wide opening with aggressive players yet to act and you still wanna see the flop with A9s you'd have to fold to a 3-bet. Of course, there's a chance you'd get your 2 pair against a set but it is the same chance with AKs, actually.

i was the one going on about my 2500 and 20k tourneys earlier. yeah,. i did ok in those. then i decide to play a $16 sit'n'go, take first, and won more money in that 30 minutes than the little more than min cash in two 5 hour+ tourneys lol. +++ on the day so'z maybe now i take a real break and wait for tomorrow. i guess that's poker

Hey, I know that this is already quite old video, but how to adjust LIVE poker with a lot of limpers? They do not limp / 3bet preflop. They don't often fold = so they play limp / call almost always. I play mostly not against one, but against 2 players or more. They are not very aggressive postflop, but they also like to call a lot of flops, turns. It is hard to just sit and wait for good hands. Is limping behind small Axs+, Kxs+, some e.g. Q8s make sense? How about open limping such hands? Its hard to play A4s against 3-4 players when you are oop. From the other hand, if you fold that hand pre, you basically don't play any hands.

In tip 3 you say to call with implied odd hands. If you are the LoJack with a hand like 67s that you normally would fold if it is folded to you, is this a good overlimp spot? Let’s say you have two limpers in a very passive game and you have 67s in the LoJack, is this now worth limping because of the two limpers?

does anything change if you have like a ton of limpers every? This might be stupid but I’m trying to “beat” no stakes online poker before I start playing for money. Ideally i think I should be able to beat what I assume is the worst class of player before I start putting money on the line but also I know I’m not going to memorize preflop ranges in 4 different scenarios for 9 positions and be able to track my opponents’ behaviors and adjust my strategy based on position and calculate my opponents’ ranges and calculate pot odds, etc etc over night. I also know I don’t need to be perfect to play either but I want to have a baseline but I digress. In these “no stakes” games you basically have everybody limping every pot unless you raise to 10x BB, at which point at least 2 people will call every time but usually 3-4. And I’m not really sure what to do in spots like these bc going multiway with 2 to 6 other people who limp _every_ pot and check every street and call any bet size makes it hard to judge my hand strength. I have been improving while ive been learning tbh but I can’t tell if this is just useless as a form of practice since the variance is basically through the roof when nobody cares abt the stakes or it’s just a skill issue on my end.

I enjoyed this video. What do you consider an acceptable rake? Where I play the maximum rake is $7 (10% up to $50 and $1 each for high hands and bad beat).issue is at 1/2 they have a mandatory $2 button blind so it's always $2 taken even with no flop. Pretty much all casinos here are similar, although better ones allow chops and no flop, no rake. They end up fleecing the customer pretty bad and make it almost impossible to beat lower limit games. In Vegas what is the standard rake for cash games?

Rake is usually $4/hand or so in Vegas, although it varies from casino to casino.

The biggest differences will be stack sizes: in many tournaments the ratio between stack size and bb is lower than in cash games. ITM considerations may also be key. Finally whether there is a rake or not will affect the play.

i played against a limper last night. i followed the start chart as instructed. he limped everysing hand ALL hands and called all raises except 3 bets. he did well cause he played after the flop and used postion which froze me up from being aggressvie with bluffs ., the bad thing he was directly to my left so i couldnt get show down vaule with hands that were probably good but my check induced a bet everytime . how do you deal with this? leave ?

Question: I play in Low Stake turbo tournaments every week and I can't seem to find the right value of betting for monster hands. If I raise to small I get hands like K X suited calling it and getting there somehow but if I raise too big then I get no value from my hands. Please help thank you :)

You should usually raise somewhere from 2.2x-3x the big blind. People will splash around and call with Kx, suited... and that is fine! You just have to realize that, and not overplay your hand. It is okay to lose pots. Playing with a tight un-capped range vs a loose, splashy, capped range is great, and you will print equity in the long run.

hi sorry I’m a noob. What’s an “implied odds” hand? I would assume it’s things like AJ AK basically any 2 J->A? But you say to raise big cards. So is the difference suited vs unsuited? or are implied odds hands like A8s, 9/10s, QTo, etc?

If you hit on hands with "implied odds" you are likely to win a large amount of chips. i.e. betting with a strong flush draw as opposed to check/calling or getting checked back to is taking your "implied odds" into consideration. Or calling pre flop with 44 because the times you hit 3 of a kind you can likely win a large pot (even though 44 on its own is not going to win a lot of big pots, it has "implied odds")

My problem is I have every single type of player at my home game and they are mostly limpers. The more aggressively players mostly call a 3bet anyway the tighter players wont 4 bet their mega hands. Help me!

Ok so if they call 3bet with bad hands they will be losing over time because they have the worse odds. It will be frustrating because you can never know if they did luckily hit a random straight or flush but playing 1000 hands you should be fine.

I find that some of the lesser broadway hands like queen ten, jack ten off, are still worth raising in late position. It's tricky because some people in the low stakes games I play will limp call with things as strong as king queen, some will limp call with total trash. But when I flop one pair with these hands, the pair does have some value. If I'm not opening these hands, aren't I being extremely narrow in what my opening range is?

The only place I have to play live is 3 and a half hours away (Harrahs Cherokee) and rakes 10% up to 7 dollars :( there's no badbeat jackpot or any kind of promotion either. So I either accept getting rake raped or don't get to play. Fortunately I'm significantly better than the vast majority of players there so I can still win, but it sucke how they get away with fleecing everyone in a huge radius because we have no alternatives

I’m not trying to contradict the master here, however limping jacks seems like it has to be missing a ton of value, unless the UTG limper never limps UTG? If he’s limping a wider range AA seems like a small part of that range? He could have Q10 suited? Pocket 9’s? 10’s? QK? 89s etc? All which call the raise, and then consider folding to the limp re-raise? I play with players who always limp big hands, but usually are passive, so fold the flop a ton, sometimes fold pre - when they limp raise I can just fold and it seems to work out well?

Isn’t it better to raise the qq or jj and then just fold to the obvious limp re raise aa/kk rather than letting hands with position on you and trash blinds have chance to hit hidden two pair? I would rather lose 5bb by folding pre then play qq against blinds and limpers

Yes, JJ/QQ are premium hands and should be raised over limps. When I say medium pairs, I'm referring to 22-88/99 depending on the position/strategy of the limper.

QQ I 100% agree with you however with say AK you might miss the flop, or see a flop that you're not too happy with / don't want to continue quite often so personally, I put AK into my limp - 3 bet range. AK isn't really a made hand and you only really want to continue with it the 33% of the time you flop an ace or a king, and even then not on super wet flops, while with queen's, you always have the 3rd best pair you could have minimum, usually an overpair on 2/3rds of flops. Normally if you have AK you get coolered by people flopping a set however good limpers who might be limping with a low pocket pair like 44 know that it has excellent implied odds and will call to see if they can flop a set against you anyways so normally I limp with AK off suit, and raise / 4 bet queen's and AK suited. I think I might fall into the Tricky range limper category though lol.

Youre absolutely right abt limping and adjusting lol. I was playing daily big stack turbo 30k/15min. I was seat 4 and seat 5 is a solid regular. We both have a huge stack. I FELT to my left that this kid was really strong for some reason? So I LIMPED RED QUEENS for 400 instead of risking a 4 bet and sure enough he raised 1500. Now I know where I was at lol. He got called by BB and myself. Flop was not good 46ssX. Im looking for my damn Queen! I was check calling in this spot and he bet 4000! I snapped called. Turn was ACE spade and I know that he KNOWS that the ACE definitely fits my range and also flush completed. I was thinking of shoving or betting huge and it was by 50% I felt he mightve lay down. I sadly didn't go for it and I wish I did. He took his time and considered why I was checking the Ace spades? He checked behind. River was another blank and I checked instead of betting, once again I felt my only bet was a shove if I was gonna credibly rep at least the turn or maybe shoving on flush? I didn't do it and checked and he checked behind with KK...So ya I love to limp if given the right conditions lol. Ty for this video!

Hi Jonathan. At 5.08 you said he on button ruined it for you by raising to 8 bb and the utg limper shoving all in with his aces, and showing them. Surely though, apart from you flopping a set and cracking his aces, didn't he actually save you from likely losing the hand as you were behind? Or because you knew the utg player does that with only the top 3 or better, you were hoping to see a flop to catch a jack to crack his aces and scoop the lot?

$7 rake on small stakes game? WOW!!!!! I live in Atlantic City, rake is 10% with a $4 max. Plus almost all casinoes except one, offer cash rakeback with a minimum of 50 hours in a month.

If it so happens that you are able to play a ridiculous number of hands against the same player AND if you are able to actually see enough of his hole cards when he limps then i guess maybe you can have a slight inkling of his limping range - but my point is you quickly gloss over this point as if it’s no big deal to figure this out…

If you don't know what people are limping, look for what hands they have limped and shown down with. If you see a guy who limped AQo, raise him tighter. If he's showing down with Q4s, isolate the hell out of him. Be careful limping behind with small pairs - these hands get stacked all the time in low stakes in set-over-set situations. All in all, good video. If I could sum it up, I'd say you just need to pay attention, figure out what these people are doing and exploit the daylights out of them. In a high-raked game, if people are limping a lot, they are terrible enough to snug it up and get stacks with your big hands - do not bleed out "seeing cheap flops" with hands that you can't play for stacks with.
