One of the best hotel experiences I ever had was when I booked the Atlanta Westin Peachtree for our wedding night. I'd just signed up to SPG in the process of booking the room so I didn't have status. I did reserve the romantic package with champagne and strawberries waiting in the room. And in the special instructions I only said that it was our wedding night and I would like a room with a nice view. We were very late getting out of our reception and ended up getting to the hotel after 11pm. We checked in and they gave us our room key and we took the elevator to our floor. It wasn't until we got off the elevator that we realized they'd upgraded us to the Presidential Suite which takes up half of two floors at the very top below the Sundial restaurant. It was like house sitting some rich guy's penthouse for a night right in the center of the city. It felt like the whole city was ours. It put an exclamation point on a special night all thanks to adding a few words in the box and a very generous staff.

Great video thanks again Sebby! Maybe one thing perhaps to add is tipping the front desk $20 while checking in. I know this sounds weird but it has worked for me in the past.

These rude guests have to realize that Front Desk Agents are very powerful (because they control/can manipulate the room inventory). They can make or break one's stay. So being nice to them upon check is crucial :)

I checked in late at a Sleep Inn once and the guy gave me the suite because it would be harder to sell that late at night.

Seb-For us Midwesterners, would you be willing to do a video explaining what exactly is included in an upgraded room? Again, my experience with Midwestern traveling is that due to the expensive nature of flying from smaller airports, families tend to be at a hotel for 5-7 days. So would a hotel upgrade for long-term stays or just one to two-night visits?

On that topic, I’d love to get a video highlighting hotel group’s price matching policies. I always prefer booking directly with them, but I find better prices on portals like Expedia and Hotels.com quite often. Will they honor their prices if I call their customer support team? What are most hotels' policies on this topic?

Seb--Would you also consider a video on when it's better to choose a hotel price over hotel loyalty program? Though I am a member of Hilton Honors, I tend to find that their properties tend to be hundreds of dollars per night yet don't include free breakfast, Wi-Fi, or parking, but budget hotels--though often dated, tend to provide breakfast, Wi-Fi, or parking.

piper998877 ...hilton properties include..embassy suites, homewood suites, hampton inn, and home 2 suites...all have free breakfast and free wifi. Hilton Garden inn, hilton hotel and double tree all have free breakfast and free wifi for gold/diamond. I think price vs brand is a personal choice. It might make sense to pick a brand like Wyndham, Best Western or Choice...with lots of value choices. Or me personally, i consider my brand loyalty (regardless of price) an investment in cheaper future travel. So whether I'm staying at the fairfield inn or jw marriott...those points will pay off in the long run.

Hey Sebby, I have status with SPG/Marriott. I've had lots of success in getting upgrades just by asking. If your very nice and you ask politely and you have status on top of that they will most likely give you one.

I forgot to mention it's not those corner rooms that you normally get. I would say three times out of 5 I get a suite or on rare occasions club level.

I got a free upgrade by checking in at 9am, at the airport Sheraton in Baltimore. We were new customers, and booked direct. I was told that I might have to wait till 4PM because it was a Sunday, but 20 minutes later, my room was ready and upgraded to clubhouse. After a not so great cruise, we were delighted to get the extra half day in a comfy room. The lobby agent got a free bottle of champaign from the ship. Having little experience with SPG, I became s loyal customer, and ordered their credit card.

Yes we cruise about once a year, and I love Alaska. I wouldn't mind alternating and doing National Geographic tours occasionally, which can be quite cheap in Central/South America, or Asia.

I'm confused why you didn't book through Hilton's website. They have a "best price guarantee". From Hilton Website: "We guarantee you always get the lowest price when you reserve a room through an official Hilton booking channel... or we'll match the lower price and give you an extra 25% discount.". I mean if it was just to use a gift card I totally understand, but it seems like if that wasn't a factor it may have made sense to try to get that extra 25% off for beating their rate.
