I would *not* advise ultratrac if your use case is navigation - especially breadcrumb "find your way back" mode. And ths Instinct being marketed towards hikers, I think it's fair to point this out: Ultratrac uses an algorithm to dynamically smooth the track and creates turns in the lines by essentially, well, guessing... I would say that ultratrac is best for ultra runners - that's why it's called ultratrac. But it is not a great option for someone like a backpacker or remote backcountry hike.

One of the advantages of this watch is clear display that can be easily seen even in very low light conditions, without using a backlight. In this respect Instinct is better then Fenix series, where the display is no as clear and easily readable

Thanks for the video, they’re always great and useful. Can you do or have you done a tutorial on entering workouts at the gym? I’ve tried it and can be tricky, especially with resting times and entering sets & reps. Cheers

i have the dezl version but i cant seem to use gestures to use back light by tilting the watch. the funny thing is the setting are the same as seen here and i can toggle the option on or off but nothing happens

You make some very usefull videos, thanks for that! I bought the instinct 4 months ago as my first smartwatch. Which gps system (GPS, GLONASS, GALILLEO, ultratrac) do you prefer to use? I normally use the ultratrac since they say it's the most battery saving one (as you also said this video), but takes me a long time to get the GPS signal (1-3 min). Any recommendations on that?

Mine only lasts about 8/9 days with 2 to 3 runs with about 30-40min each

You lose a little bit of accuracy when using ultratrac. A 2km walk will be off by about 200-250m compared to a normal GPS so if you are trying to earn that walking/running badge then stick to GPS

For me, its more useful to charge the battery every Thursday at my desk, and have enough features switched on to get me thru the week, including a couple of activities, and some battery to spare by the following Thursday. That way I have a routine, get the most out of the watch, and don't have to use a slot on the watch face to monitor the battery level. (I can check the battery via the menu if needed). So I have GLONASS enabled, and a stronger backlight etc.

I agree with having a routine so you can get the most out of the features. These tips can be useful if you have any plans in the future where you may not have a good way to charge your watch.

might vary per watch, but when you hold the menu (up) button, the battery symbol or percentage appears -forerunner 645 will vibrate once it charges

In Data, if you switch to every second during a mountain Bike ride you get the most accuracy on the miles ridden. However, it does eat up the battery life and you need to switch it back to smart.

This is a common misconception. Smart GPS tracking uses the same amount of battery life as does 1-second. The fact about GPS in most Garmin products is this: if tracking is set below a certain threshold (usually about 30 seconds), then the device maintains a persistent GPS fix, so it is recording every second either way. The purpose of smart recording is actually for space savings. On old GPS receivers and a lot of smart watches, internal storage space is at a premium, so smart recording was invented to combat the issue with saving thousands of track points. support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=s4w6kZmbmK0P6l20SgpW28

I get a full month of battery with notifications turned off heart rate on 6 runs a month and I don’t wear it to bed. You did not say how long all that will last on the battery?

Wow. Mine lasts a month with around 6 hours of GPS activity a week. I turn all features off when not in GPS mode however.

I found that out the first time I used my watch. I didn’t read the instructions so didn’t know what it was. I just thought - we’ll Ultratrack sounds good - it must be the best setting. Nope - my run distance was pretty accurate but when reviewing the route to I’d taken there were numerous sections where the watch showed I’d jumped over roads and cut corners around fields etc. Not worth saving battery life if it’s not going to be accurate in my opinion.

It is no issue! It just takes your location every minute or so. It is meant for long-distance hikes through rough nature.

UltraTrack is useless. Shows wrong data. Been running and testing- shows wrong distance (added extra 200-300 m), wrong pace (suppose to be around 4:30 , showed 4:50), wrong GPS date - showed, that I was running throughout buildings. Don't use this if I need accurate data.
