Heads up for anyone who’s coloring at home but shopping at Sally’s beauty! I went in the other day with full knowledge about the fact that for brunette the only way to tone is with a deposit only solution and they sell a Eq shades generic version of this as well as a gloss. I found the gloss but couldn’t locate the solution so the worker said “you could use a 20v or 10v it’s the same thing” I had to explain to her that it isn’t and that a deposit only is the only way I won’t be left with orange hair so be careful y’all the workers there don’t actually know the deal. Listen to the professionals like this beauty above.
Yeah I was told the opposite that I can only use their solution, and got both, basically If you’re applying it to wet/damp hair it brings the 10vol developer down to a 8 which is what the processing solution is.
I was told at Sally’s to use a 20 vol, but thankfully I had watched another video that said 10vol was best for deposit only. Now that I know that I have to get a darker color I will purchase it to get the best result.
Soooo good tips!!! It's so hard to find good videos about this because so few of us has really brassy and red tones. All DIY never works on my hair and now I know why! 😊
@@becx3163 hey i found a “blue” shampoo that apparently helps tone out the red undertone after dying into ‘light or platinum blond’ take this as you will😭 i read somewhere that it made someone’s end into blue bc they were brighter than the rest of their hair, so take this with a grain of salt i’m just telling u what i found in case💀
It depends on how long you keep it on your hair - and what level of developer your using. If your using bleach and want to go lighter you need a higher level developer and leave on your hair longer . The best way is to cut a test strand , bleach it wrap in foil and watch the timer. As it develops & gets closer to the color you want make sure to write down the time. So when do it on your hair use same time. You will probably want to do a toner after you hi-light your hair. Hope that helps.
hey so i tested it on my virgin hair and i got to dark blonde(not white blond but BLONDE blonde) and it fried my hair i hate it😭 love the color tho 10/10
OMG. I wish this all made sense to me. I don't want to change my hair color. It's a medium/dark brown. I just want to cover the gray. I use the Wella Charm color and volume 10 developer and it looks great UNTIL I'm in the sun. Then I have a horrible red halo! ICK! What am I doing wrong?
Color turned brassy, it’s white/ grey hair. For cool tones on brown hair blue shampoo. Or I can tone my hair w/ a pearl silver color . Manic panic or something like that. Just on red areas.
🙋🏽♀️ Does chelating the hair remove toner? OR does chelating the hair remove unwanted heavy metals, products waxes, silicones etc…and lighten/brighten highlighted areas? OR can both be true? I always feel like toner needs to be reapplied after chelating or using detox shampoos.
Omg I finally got it yes I’m a level 6A brown ash but I started get lots of brassy reds haters it but ok now I get it I have to go to a 5A . No question is can I use a AG toner to maintain, I just don’t want to be too dark going down 4 . I have too much grey my hair. Thank you so much for the information. This is really help me.❤

Oh girl!!! U look great with some lowlights!!!! Wow!!
I totally agree, green based hair dyes are great for brunettes trying to go a couple of levels lighter, I've been using them for years now. I actually found them in Mexico because our hair pigmentation is darker but now that I live in Germany, it's just so different I gotta find new brands that carry that. Italian brands like fanola are a good option here
My hair was BOTCHED and I mean badly by a stylist putting low lights and root smudge using a permanent color. I was perfect highlighted blonde with just using bleach highlights and simple tone on my level 5.5 hair. Took me 2 years to try to get orange out and did so damaging my hair and being darn near solid blonde blonde (from many stylists trying). So, after that ordeal, I finally have my hair with lots of regrowth and go see a new girl. I explained NEVER perm in my hair ever! She did a great job first time and I was finally happy...so I thought! Next time, 9wks later I go back to her and because I was more solid blonde (from issues before) she wanted some lowlights to bring down a bit. Yeah, sound good, but ONLY with Semi or I will just wait! Well, what do you know...she puts that darn perm color in hair and sure enough lifts all that regrowth to that perfect shade of copper that I HATE so much. So, here I am again growing hair back out and only doing straight highlights/toner but I can NOT get the mid part of my hair gone of the copper! Near 3 years of tears!
I recently had a similar situation where the hair stylist was shocked my hair took on such a golden color, was going for a pale cool blonde. However, now I have to deal with a more honey, golden with some pale highlights. I mean, it's nice but not the look I was going for. My question is why do so many "good" hair stylists have trouble with lifting dark hair w/o gold or copper tones?
Late to the party but wondering how your hair journey was going. I think some of us pull really orange and it's so frustrating. When the stylist doesn't believe you, that's even worse. My natural is like a 6.5. When it's lightened it goes brassy. I'm waiting a few weeks before we go in again .
Color doesn’t lift color. You need lightener to get past the red/orange stage., then tone with ash/ green!! And it was taught when I went to beauty school!!! And I’m totally flabbergasted that they do not teach more about toning !?!? How is this possible ??? I mean these stylist today don’t even know how to use a damn curler !! And I mean a real hair curler !! No finger waves. Hey I got my cos license in NYS. Yall don’t know anything if you can’t pass it when I took it. What a shame. They don’t even cover the color wheel !!!???? Ugh 😣
Can anyone suggest a great level 5-4 ashy permanent colour and / or tonner? I am naturally a level 6. Have been bleaching my hair whole or as Babylights for over a decade and just want to have a nice root colour. It only ever lasts for a wash or two till the braciness comes back in and I have tried colder washes, gentler shampoos etc. Still brassy even if with an Igora permanent colour. Bleaching first and colouring at level 6 is too damaging long-term, so I would rather try out going darker in roots instead to cover up the brassiness. Thanks in advance!
I can't seem to find the video that I'm looking for period my hair is brown, but I'm trying to dye my hair all over to cover gray I used an auburn color but my gray is now kind of orange.
I am naturally dark blonde to brown hair and i want to go light/med blonde without bleach and without yellow or reds tones after coloring how do i achieve this thanks! The lady at Sallys beauty had me put T18 wella and 20 vol on hair and it lifted slighty but left red tones to my hair 😕 and did not lift ro my desired blonde!
so how do you lift your hair to a higher level an then tone down? or there’s no way to keep an ash tone if you have red/orange roots? I applied a 6 and my reds are still there, will applying a 5 give me the ash tone?
I’ve been looking for a green toning shampoo forever. Only found one but it’s awful. I just added a smidge of green dye with a blue shampoo and it seems to freshen up and neutralize my brassiness on my dark brown hair
I lighten my roots with wella high lift frost with 30 developer it does the trick the after I can do a toner if I don’t want to much orange my hair is a golden blonde slightly orange purple shampoo can tone the orange
Hello, I bleached my hair and I’m trying to get the color you have , what color should I put on roots , also how do I avoid bleeding the root color onto my bleached hair, somehow it always happens. Please help 🙏
I’m using Wella Colorcharm demi-permanent 5N with a 10 vol devetoper and I’m surprised how well it covers my grays. It’s been about 5 months now and I wish I discovered this 20 years ago.
@@Ellebangs Can I continue to use demi-perm, perhaps a different shade/lighter as I get more grays? I currently have about 50% gray. I’m not expecting 5N results. I just want to make the grays not so gray. Very porous hair and absorbs the color well. I don’t want to go back to perm color.
@@IceCat143 hi, I’m not a hair stylist, but I do touch up my roots at home because I have over 50% grey especially in front and I touch up every 4-5 weeks, I have fine natural level 5 hair. I do not use permanent hair colour because I like to highlight my hair and breaking through permanent colour would damage my hair too much and I also do not want a harsh line of demarcation as it grows out. Also It doesn’t bother me if it’s not 100% covered….I use Schwarzkopf Igora vibrance with corresponding 13 volume for 30 minutes and it covers my greys nicely and it gives me a soft grow out. I mix half natural and half ash, 5-00/7-00 + 6-12, it fades lighter but it does not fade brassy or warm at all. I learned this method from watching a lot of experienced, well seasoned hairstylists on RU-vid. Works for me Good luck
@@alidafidani5838 Where do you buy these products? My hair is (was) naturally a 5-6 but now mostly gray. Am struggling with permanent hair colors on my roots because they always go red/orange regardless of how ashy the color itself is. Am interested in trying what you do, but maybe a level 6. (I also have lighter highlights that were done in a salon and they also look brassy.)
I just watched this video and still have no idea what she just talked about. I really want to learn because I don't want any brass colour any more! I really don't like it. I'm brunette and have some baby highlights. My brown is a bit brassy now. What should I ask my colorist to prevent that? 😒
Okay… I am trying to do my research. I bleached my hair and it is a reddish orange. I’m a brunette and it has always lifted like that. Well I want something more ashy. I saw people using wella toner 14 + 050 additive + developer. Would that help? I’m confused when you say using a toner with developer won’t help lighten the red tones. Help me please 😩
I have the sane question. Did the toner T14 & 50 work for you ? The red will be there until it is completely stripped taken out of your hair. For me I was depositing super dark brown into my hair for years, and to remove the red: it took 6 bleaching on my newer hair to remove the red. The ends still have some red but I cannot keep bleaching the ends. I get hair trimmed every few fells to get the ends to go away. Anything with gold will deposit a red tone into your hair which is what I did for years.
I am a natural copper head , I would bleach my hair every month to try to stay blonde , it always turned back copper anyway. Now I find I like my copper hair ,it goes with my skin tone and now I just touch up some grey roots but it stays copper/strawberry blonde, I like it and it is much heather looking . My husband likes it too. I may go darker red/copper/strawberry blonde? in the fall.
Mrs Elle bangs , i have lightish brown box dyed hair after years of bleaching it, and no matter how dark a brown i put on it once it washes/ fades i'm left with very very red tone brown hair, i want to stop dying it so dark brown but hate the red tone , i've tried blue shampoo/conditioner, someone said if i mix a tiny bit of blue hair dye with conditioner and leave it on for 5 mins it will tone red tones, is that right? Any advise is greatly appreciated 🙏
You’re toning with the wrong colour dear. You need green instead of blue. Try a green based demi permanent dye. Or mix some green semi permanent dye with a white conditioner. Hope this helps.
@@HannahJade870 I dyed my hair with a light ash brown and it turned almost black now faded to brassy reddish. How much green to conditioner should I use?
I am a middle aged man, I colour my hair ash brown over what is now natural grey hair. There is a lot of brassiness. Taking into account my age and natural hair colour of grey now, how I can I prevent the brassiness showing please?
Max explain so much better..J.Beverly Hills hair color have double ash and blue and green inside so can get rif off red/orange.. Level 2 to level 6 natural brown hair.he lift with hair color.
I wish she would give examples of what she means for certain words of types of products for the lay people here. I haven’t been to cosmetology school so it’s hard to understand her lingo.
Soo much info u give us! Thanks so much I luv watching your videos !😃. Can u do a brunette series? I’m trying to go blonder for like 2 years now and need to be schooled because I’m still at a level 8 😏 and being latina I pull red tones so quickly. How can I achieve that level 9 and up? and what toners help to combat brass? Thanks 😊
it can be hard on your color or strip your toner and expose warm tones, however hard water doesn't give you brassy hair if you have virgin un-colored hair.
@@loritrue8459My hair turned dark mahogany red from too much iron in the well water. It also made it straight and impossible to style, even with a curling iron. ( industrial size filters did not filter the iron. Well was shut down.)
For fall and winter I went auburn, demo permanent and at the salon. We’re working on going back to blonde and did one round of baby lights and have booked another. Is there anything I can do between salon sessions to help get rid of the warmth aside from purple shampoos and conditioners? My hair holds the red tones way too strongly which was great when I was auburn but not when I want to be blonde again.
if you feel your warmth is coming from your highlights you can easily tone your hair at home but if the warmth is coming from your base, then it becomes a little more difficult and I would suggest a licensed professional.
Thank you so much! So now that I know (brunette level 6.75 ish, don’t mind toning down to 5.75 ish) what would I use to accomplish that? That’s the next step I don’t know.
I have naturally light brown hair, had blonde highlighted hair for over 1 year and dyed it back to brown at a salon 1 month ago. My hair has now turned into a red orange color, what should I do to get it light brown again? 💕
So is there ever really a way to keep brunette hair from fading to the ugly red? Or is it just a constant battle of having to tone down every few weeks? Sure it looks the way I want it to as soon as it's done. But that always fades and looks red.
@@krykat. it's because blue cancels orange and not red. You need green to cancel red. The brand Matrix, Dark Envy seems quite effective but I haven't tried it. There's also a green hair mask by Kerastase but it's expensive.
See I’m watching this to get the brassy tone, I wanna add orange dye to give it a little more brightness. But it’s basically highlights without going to the roots is the hope
I am growing out my blonde hair and what to just spray on a toner, or apply a moose or gray temp color to blend the gray roots better and color or tame the yellow. What do you recommend for a leave on toning spray to tone down yellow. I do not want to use any thing permanent I am done with coloring my hair.
Wrong - never use permanent color Directly - if you want to go from Ash to Warm Color . You need to use the 4 or 3 Series with a 20% Volume See the clients base color first.
what's a 4 to 3 series? sorry, not a professional. i have naturally blond hair but ashy roots that turn brassy, I hate that!!! i get a bleach weave but the toner is making it grey, not liking that either, i would love just a neutural beige blonde.
So, if you are a brunette you shouldn't have lighter brown (baby)highlights? Is my conclusion correct? Because I have brown hair, and I got baby highlights in a lighter shade of brown... but I get this problem of getting orangy parts in my hair (which I hate!). I do use a purple shampoo that the salon recommended me to use.
I have natural dark brown hair, however I have some areas that come out red and copper because I have some Scottish background in the family. What does someone do who has multiple natural colors going on at the root?
I have a client who was getting her hair lifted w color to cover her 3 greys.. now she’s with me and I’m trying to lowlight / high light her to get rid of those red tones mixed in.. any tips?
What is more effective in toning a darker shade..the actual color or the tone of the color? For example , if you only have a lighter shade but the tone is correct? Will it do anything?
My hair is dark brown and I want it to be mushroom brown and it's a struggle ! I bleached my hair and it turned out orange/yellow so I dyed it with an ash color but it didn't cancel the orange, I had to dye it darker so I was back to square 1. I can't find any green based color anywhere so I'm going to mix green dye with a neutral color, I hope it works.
