FYI for those travelling internationally who didn't watch this video all the way through - it is illegal to bring fresh produce or dairy and meat products across borders for most European countries and Canada due to biosecurity risks. Just because they aren't always enforced, doesn't mean you should do it. There are food sniffing dogs for those things at a lot of airports. Also, never accept the hot water on airplanes - common flight attendant tip. Apparently those kettles are GROSS.
I like to keep my salads cold. TSA will allow a solid freezer pack for meat, and cheese sandwiches. I’ll be sure to save my Starbucks bags- I like that idea.
I always get a plastic McDonalds bag to pack my food before my flight, like sandwiches, cheese, nuts and fruits, so I love your ideas. I have never been stopped. I like the plastic for traveling as it tears less and can get wet. Normally I would stay away from plastic bags, but not for travel.
I made it to and from Greece with my snacks in a little reusable grocery tote that I would just tie onto my carryon while going through the airport. Nobody questioned it or looked in it, ever. It did save space in my little backpack to keep it separate. I LOVE your charcuterie idea. I'm going to use that for my next trip.
I actually love getting a $5 Coke, a $14 sub sandwich and airport sushi 🍣. It's something that I look forward to when I'm traveling 😋. It just tastes better when I am on the airside in my favorite airport.
I know right?! But in my case I get sandwiches at a places where I can't get it anywhere else. Like Dish Delish out of SeaTac airport or La Bakery out of JFK Airport and I'll just get a coconut water. But I haven't traveled out of state since 2019 so I don't know if Dish Delish is still around and I haven't been to NYC in 7 years so I don't know if La Brea bakery is still there. But I highly recommend both places if you like hot sandwiches too. We used to buy LA Brea's bread for years so I could just recreate their sandwich at home.
I know exactly what you mean. I do bring snacks but since I usually try to get early flights out of Orlando, I always treat myself to a Starbucks Chai tea Grande and a breakfast item or a few pastries. WAY overpriced but it's been like a tradition of mine to indulge in a special breakfast before my adventure begins.
I sometimes will bring some beef jerky. A few years ago, I started time restricted feeding, sometimes called intermittent fasting. I don't eat or drink (except water) from dinner until lunch the next day. I found that I can easily not eat and not get hangry! Also comes in handy when you have to have any procedures that are NPO after midnight.
I once packed a charcuterie board type snack on the plane in a reusable container. I had fruit, mini mozzarella cheese, balls, deli meat and a few other things before but won't again. When I went through security it was X-rayed multiple times before allowing me to take it back. Now I pack everything separately like cheese and crackers together and fruit separately. If I want deli meat, I put it in a sandwich instead.
I loved this video…I would like to mention another unwritten rule to go by regarding smells….PERFUMES, COLOGNES, AND anything that has fragrance. People, like me, can have chemical sensitivities that can cause anaphylaxis. Thanks for sharing your great tips!
I dislike the smelly foods that people bring on to aircraft. I try to keep it simple (i.e. Boarshead sandwich or snack pack). Gone are the days when traveling was something you looked forward to. I remember being service a three course meal on real plates with silverware.
Great tips! I’ve been doing the Starbucks bag trip for a while, glad you’re sharing this hack. For my next trip i’ll be making your charcuterie board. Thanks 😊
I really like the Starbucks bag hack but just a bit of advice: if you're asking for some hot water or using a saved SB bag, I would pay the $2-4.00(or a tip) for at least a pastry or snack, etc. for their help. I am going on a cruise in September out of Lisbon, Portugal and have to fly from Miami. I'm going to make your pasta recipe but put the salad in a Ziploc bag that I will eat BEFORE my flight and can just toss in the trash (I will have abt a five hr wait at the airport. Rather be super early than late lol). I will put the rest of my snacks in a Starbucks bag for the 8hr flight.
I pack two bagels with cream cheese for our morning flights. Lorna Doone and peanut snack packs, which we usually have at home. I will also make a charcuterie box for a long flight to Vegas. We use the Contigo for hot or cold drinks. We get hot water from a restaurant, usually at no charge. I add a tea bag for me and single-serving coffee packets for my husband. We usually buy a large water at the airport and share it.
i use a snack ziplock with water frozen as a icepak i can throw out before security or drink if it melts beforehand. keeps my ham n cheese fresh for snaks of if i make a chicken pesto pasta to last longer :)
I love bringing nuts (macadamia, almonds) because a little goes a long way. I bring wipes jn case a fellow traveler is allergic so I don’t spread the dust. But I’m definitely trying the charcuterie board! Great tips!!!
Thank you for thinking of the wipes but some people can be around the nuts at all or they can have an anaphylactic reaction. I know someone who had one because they cooked nuts in the restaurant that the person was in.
This is one of The Best Videos on this topic! Anything that avoids having to purchase the GMO based foods in the airport at the last minute.... is a major plus! SIMPLY MAKE & PACK YOUR OWN! 😊 I am a travel advisor and I can share this video with my clients. This video is perfect! It is very informative and you keep it simple. ❤ THANK YOU!
I have frozen foods before and they got through as a solid. This includes soups and hummus or any other food that can be frozen. If you use the little 2 or 4 ounce plastic containers it should be thawed by the time it's needed.
It definitely works. A long time ago, like back in the 2000s, I had bought something at our airport and kept the bag. I re-use it and it's perfect for carrying my snacks onto the plane. They think I bought food at the airport.
@@chezellis I am flying an 8hr international soon. I am definitely using this tip! I don’t drink Starbucks, but I will be going to my local store and buying something and then asking for several bags as I will be making several flights.
Starbucks coffee gives me a stomachache but I love their egg 🥚 sandwiches 🥪 although I wouldn’t buy it at the airport since it would be extremely expensive.
Loved the content of the video. Great tips! Like you, I wipe down everything on a plane with Clorox wipes. I've been doing this LONG before Covid-19 brought germ awareness to the forefront. I absolutely abhor touching things that the "public" has touched! I guess you could say I am a "self-diagnosed" germaphobe and a bit OCD. A positive benefit is that I seldom get sick.
If you are diabetic, yes you CAN bring an extra bag (cooler bag) for your insulin/medications/snacks. Same with a CPAP machine. You can bring both a bag for your CPAP machine AND a bag for your insulin and medications. My CPAP bag is a mid=size soft side duffel and I used it to bring an extra t-shirt and socks and such (used as padding to protect the machine). My insulin cooler also holds a few necessary refridgerated items like cheese and grapes for low=blood sugar emergencies.
I have a pixie cut and grew out mine after coloring for 20 years this year (I'll be 44 in a few weeks). It's easier with short hair, but it's still a challenge. It's nice being done...I love the way it looks.
You can take powdered peanut butter or powdered hummus for your snack. Just add water. We have tried the peanut butter and it’s good. Have yet to try the hummus...
Yes, when my children were younger, I had a gallon ziploc in my backpack with various travel snacks for them. They were wrapped and dry items like crackers and red licorice, nothing liquid, but TSA pulled my bag from the X-ray line and took the snacks out of my bag to inspect.
I always save those paper bags from restaurants and pack my food in them at home. Just did it last week when I took sandwiches, fruit & chips on my flight to Vegas!
I love the bag idea. I have brought snack bars (like Kind bars or Taos bakes) but they aren't really a meal. I like the little charcuterie box idea. So very first class. :D Also nice road trip ideas. I usually bring a cooler on road trips, but end up eating the same thing which works for about a week. I have started bringing small packages of artichokes, olives, etc (trader joes)....if you have a Trader Joes (maybe Aldi) they have some nice things to put in your box. The bag makes it really possible to do your meal idea-- I have seen videos of someone pulling this out of the personal item bag. Yeah but where do you put your stuff? :D
Great ideas ! A note about nut allergies........... in our family the deadly nuts are walnuts, macadamia, peanut and pistachio, so nuts on a plane at all can be life threatening, not just peanuts.
Christi, you are a woman after my heart! 😃 Also a gluten free eater which when you're traveling may get tricky and pricey. Fabulous advice! I make a salad like when I am camping, with chickpeas, veggies and vinaigrette dressing. Every time I eat the food I prepared and brought I feel i am getting one of the best meals on the airport - and I probably am! I also wholeheartedly subscribe to the "must have dessert" rule. I get a hot coffee with some sweet treat and I am happy! Thank you for everything, I am getting ready (waaay too early!) for a fall France trip, working on my systems and really enjoying and getting great inspiration from your videos! Au revoir! 😃
Yes! I am trying to prepare for gluten free travel and I'm a bit nervous. I am very sensitive to cross contamination and I am trying to research what to pack for backup meals when gf foods are not available. If you have any recommendations on things you've found, please share. Thank you!
@curlgirl4265 I was also worried about this (low carb/gluten free) issue with our upcoming trip to Europe in the Spring 2024. A couple tips I’ve gathered is -to learn the words “gluten free” in other languages, to ask for options at restaurants, to bring your own option on the airplane (like this lovely charcuterie board idea), and perhaps to find hotels that cater to those who have food allergies. Of course, doing a vrbo or Airbnb gets you your own kitchen, and possibly could look for a place that is not too far from an open farmers market?
@@dessireshallenberger2836 Great ideas! Thank you! I did print off some celiac disease cards in other languages that I will use, but I will try and pick up some knowledge of the language too. I won't be able to choose the hotel on this trip and there are meals provided on the trip as well and I was planning on packing protein bars, etc. to get me through if I am unable to find anything available that is celiac friendly.
I want to try your Mediterranean salad on my next long flight - looks easy and delicious! Also, I get cold on flights, so I'd def eat a cup of hot soup. :D
I think she is trying to say is that once you get pass security, take your food out of your personal bag and put it in a airport food service bag so you can walk on the plane with it. That way it is not such a pain to get your food out of the personal bag once you are seated in the plane.
I don’t eat anything because I don’t want to have to go to the bathroom. I drink very little too. I put my canned drink into my empty water bottle. Or else I take it closed and have it after.
I once got told to put my food that I bought at the airport with my drink in my backpack because otherwise it would be considered an extra bag. I argued with the gate check guy that it’s not ever considered an extra bag, but he was insistent. 🤨
I thought we couldn't bring cheese or premade sandwiches that contained anything that was considered a liquid (mayo/peanutbutter/jelly/hummus). Has that changed? I'd really love to know as that would be so much nicer to have a non-dry sandwich you could bring with you from home! LOVE the starbucks bag trick! So clever! Flying this weekend and will try to use these great ideas! Thanks for sharing.
I know that European Airport Security has some different rules, but I believe as long as the sandwich has been made and you are not carrying the liquid substance separate, you can bring the sandwich with you. That is definitely true in the US 😊. Have fun on your trip!
@jn…things always change when you talk about governmental rules instituted especially after 9/11. Not griping, i.e. they used to disallow knitting needles on flights and I found out they are allowed now (flew and knitted a few yrs ago) but still find out from the carrier you are using what they allow.
@@cherylreynolds2672Isn't it containers or yogurt and peanut butter you can't take. I would think a peanut butter sandwich would be ok. Not too thick. ???
Great videos. Wasn't sure what we can or cannot bring. My husband & I are going to Italy for Christmas. Wanted to take some extra snacks. Do we pack the Starbucks bag at home or once through TSA precheck? Thanks again.😎🚝💖
I’ve seen it mentioned in some videos that security will sometimes ask that the food be in a clear bag and taken out of your personal item bag, when going thru security.

I thought for traveling to Hawaii or outside of USA, fruits & veggies r not allowed. Can someone clarify if the airlines allow such items be carried onto an international flight, even though they don’t cause any issues with TSA? Thx in advance!
Hi Gypsy, thank you for the great tips on this and your other videos. May I get the info on the Chocolate you use, Moser Roth? I can only see the larger bars online, but I'd love to see about those small ones. Thank you so much. happy travels!🙂
@@theresamccarthy9209 Of course I live in a state that doesn't have these stores. Boo! :/ Thank you very much for the information, it was very kind of you to respond. :)
I have one thing to add…taste buds taste foods differently in the pressurized environment. Nobody will notice you eating fresh veggies (eating healthy). Now I want a falafel. I wouldn’t want to eat soup because I don’t like salty foods when I fly. Peanuts of all sorts are fine when most of us got used to them on airplanes. This salad (I wish I had thought of this, a long time ago)…is perfect for a long drive (my family drove a lot when my kids were young - ski trips for my son and husband). Do not bring fleshy fruit because it will turn to mush in no time (30minutes to 1hr, this happened to me) on longer flights. Blueberries are best as are apples, grapes (and bring some knife for the apples - the juice will run).
Correction: I fly EVERY weekend. Mostlu southwest. However, the cheaper flight, especially frontier, will make you condense those "shopping in airport bags." I've seen people having to shove the starbucks, snacks, etc, in their purses/backpacks weekly, lol... that's as of 2023 . Also, they have a "strict" 40-pound limit on check-in luggage. So please weigh before jumping in line.
I knew about the 40 pound weight limit, it just started last Spring for Frontier. I've been lucky so far and they haven't made me shove my food bag somewhere! 😊
@@GenxGypsy1968 I have a feeling you don't abuse the system like some other folks might. Some of those airport shopping bags can get huge lol. A SB bag seems small and reasonable to me.....but we all know Frontier and Spirit are hot and cold on the bag issue. Somehow, I just walked on to these planes in the past wth a humongous backpack stuffed to the seams as my PI and have seen other people get stopped for having a tiny fanny belt on in addition to their personal item. My secret is I am usually one of the last people to board and by this time, I think the flight attendants and crew just want to depart.
Awww, thank you 🤗 Unfortunately, I bought this shirt about 3 years ago at TJ Maxx or Marshall's. It is a Vince Camuto shirt, so you could possibly find something like it on Thredup!

I have made sandwiches for my flight before ! But,pasta salad sounds good !! 👍 But,where in your hand luggage do you put that in !? How do you make a room in your hand luggage !? Lol. Oh ! Waite ! You're just talking about it !! Lol. Yes !! Many youtubers mentioned it ! But,for things don't fit in our hand luggage ! I have done that ! 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶✈️💞
Can you bring a Starbucks bag from home with your food or snacks after checking in and go through security before going to your gate? I love the charcuterie ideas, lol. We're going to Thailand on Turkish Airlines in November but would like to know if it's possible to do so?
Yes, that's exactly what I do 😊. Just make sure if any of your food items are considered liquids (like hummus or peanut butter) you have them in your liquids bag going through security. Once you're out of security you can put them in your snack bag. Also check on if there are any food restrictions entering Thailand (like meat or dairy), if there are just means you'll have to finish or toss those items before going through customs when you arrive. What a fun trip 😊
That shouldn't be a problem...although, you might want to remove the batteries so it doesn't automatically turn on. To be completely sure though, you should go to the TSA Facebook or Twitter page and ask them through a DM. They do answer pretty quickly!
The delicious meals you made...do they have to go in your carryon/personal item bag??? How do you fit them in there with clothes and everything else that's already packed? The Starbucks bag passes thru TSA?
The TSA isn't concerned with how many bags you bring through security, just that you aren't carrying any items they don't want you bringing with you. It's only the airlines that care about how many bags you are bringing on the plane. So yes, the Starbucks goes through TSA just fine as long as you don't have any liquids packed in there 😊
@Genx Gypsy Thank you so much. Before 3 weeks ago when I went to Ocean Beach, CA, the last time I was on a plane was 1986. Things have changed DRASTICALLY. Oh man.
For my next flight, I plan to make a spread of salmon salad* on a tortilla and then roll it up and slice it like sushi. Yum! * canned salmon + diced red onion and seedless cucumber + mayo + Greek yoghurt + diced dill and parsley + salt substitute/pepper/spices
Hello, I see you made the pasta salad with Gluten Free pasta - what brand did you use and did it hold up? I am new to GF, and have only tried a couple pastas. This video is so helpful! I love charcuterie and am planning to make some of those in those to go boxes. That bag trick is marvelous!!
Unfortunately, I don't have any of that pasta at home with me and I can't recall the brand off the top of my head, but it really is one of the best GF pastas I've used. I do know it is a brown rice pasta. Next time I go to the store I'll try to remember to pick up another package 😊
@@GenxGypsy1968 Thank you so much! I will also do some research on the brown rice. I did buy a mix of brown rice, something (!) and quinoa, so might just have to try it.
I will be flying to Barcelona from the States, to get on a cruise. I was planning to bring turkey/beef sticks that are individually wrapped. If I put them in my checked luggage, would that be ok? Thanks
I would check with the food regulations for Spain. Many of the European countries don't allow meat to come in from other countries, no matter how it is packaged. You could bring it on the plane with you, but you would have to eat it before you went through customs. Again, check to see what their specific regulations are... Sorry I can't give you a definite answer! But sounds like an amazing vacation 😊
Definitely not. You can’t take meat across international borders. You need to eat it before you get there. You won’t need that in Spain. There’s wonderful food.
You cannot bring water through the TSA line, but there are plenty of restaurants once you are through security that you can ask to fill up a bottle with hot water. Hope this helps!
So to be clear, if I bring peanut butter in an approved size container it’s considered a liquid but if I put it on bread/sandwich it isn’t a liquid? I’m so confused. 🤭
If you are talking about smelly foods not to bring on the plane - I personally would consider feta cheese in your recipe among that group. If you sat down next to me with that (or even in my close vicinity) - I'd be hurling from the smell.
I love a lot of these snacks but I'd be careful about some of them as I think they require refrigeration. The things with cheeses and meats really shouldn't sit out at room temperature for more than a couple of hours.
