If you'd like to read about the tips in this video, here we go:
Today I am sharing 5 tips/hacks to help you improve your ukulele playing and explore a few new possibilities. Let's countdown through the tips
Tip 5: If you'd like to get a raspy/percussive sound when you play, try putting a dollar bill, a piece of paper, or a card in between your strings, close to the saddle. You may need to cut the paper to make it thin enough to work. Pass the paper over and under the strings to make it work. Experiment with different paper widths until you get a sound that you like.
Tip 4: If you have sweaty hands or fingertips and this makes the strings stick to your fretboard hand, try using deodorant on your fingertips! I recommend using one that does not have harsh chemicals. You could also try using baby powder for this
Tip 3: As you hold a tricky chord position, look down the fretboard to check your form and adjust your fingertips. This will help you see what you're doing wrong and find better ways to wiggle your fingertips into the right chord position.
Tip 2: Fretboard fingernails should be very short. Don't cut them to the point where you hurt yourself, but definitely keep these short. Keeping the fretboard fingernails short will help you build calluses and hold chord positions with proper form.
Tip 1: Stop practicing your mistakes! You are teaching yourself to play with mistakes anytime you play something incorrectly then stop playing and then go to the beginning of the song. This is NOT the right way to practice. INSTEAD: practice difficult excerpts slowly. Only practice the challenging sections. Once you have mastered the challenging excerpt, practice the section just before the excerpt + the challenging part + the part immediately after.

Thank you for always using terms like “fretboard hand” and “picking hand.” I’m a lefty player. When a teacher says things like “Now pay attention to your left hand” or “The right hand pattern is such and such,” I have to convert the right and left in my head and that can be very confusing. And I have to be always ready to do the conversion. I hate to have to pay attention to this extra step. With you I can learn stress free. That means a lot to me.

It’s so nice to see KitKat hanging around your ukulele space! 😺 I would think Tip #4 would work using cornstarch, but be mindful that this could affect a fretboard to a degree and would require the use of fretboard oil, especially when changing strings. I’m usually so excited to change strings that I forget to condition the fretboard. My random tip would be to jam with players ahead of you in your playing ability, and ALSO, jam with players who are behind your playing ability. In these days of social distancing, you have to get creative, but jamming along to a RU-vid player (any of Bernadette’s videos, of course!) is great for learning to play at that person’s level. Jamming with someone whose playing ability is below your own helps you learn, as well. If you can teach it, you have mastered (or are mastering) it. 🤟🏼♥️🌺 🌴

Good stuff, Ms B! Looking and sounding well! I invested in a sapphire nail file late last year. Wow. So much better than emery boards. Save money and have better nails. Win. Full disclosure: I am a guy who doesn't have massively strong nails, but the right sort of maintenance means you can keep your nails short on the left hand and fairly long on the right hand. I find little and often works better than a big trim once a week.

That 5th point to play without stopping & then of practicing b4 mistake, the mistake & after mistake really makes sense. I will begin applying that so I can Memorize one song at a time.🙃Instead jumping around or moving on to another & not learning anything all the way through. There's so many songs I want to learn. But I'm realizing I have to go at my own pace & not expect too much too soon. I pulled up your finger picking tutorials too so I can start learning that as well. Thank you every teacher has there own gift & individual Teaching style! Thank you I'm about 6mos. in of serious learning. I'm starting to see some progress it's about not giving up. I really Love💜this Beautiful instrument.🙂

Great tips! I'm definitely going to have to try the cutdown playing card. That percussion sounds neat. Also, will have to try looking down the fretboard when fingering a difficult chord, which should come in handy for some of the jazz chords I'm working on currently. Nice to hear about the different things folks use for drying out their fingertips. I've used rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball a few minutes before playing on occasion, so it has time to dry and to dry out my fingertips. It seems to help me with forming calluses. And I love the end shot of your sleeping kitty!

Notes and chords... good question!!! You know we have letters in the alphabet, right? Like ABC... and we combine those letters to make words. Well, in music it’s the same! We have notes like ABC and we use those to form chords! Chord C, for example is made up of notes CEG That’s it! ❤️
