Tires definitely make a big difference in the handling. I just switched tires to 27.5 × 2.8in Maxxis Recon tires and they seem to handle pretty good compared to the 3in Chronicles that I got with the bike. Better grip but higher rolling resistance
Interesting you keep bar roll at vertical which on most bars with marks will be forward of the zero degrees mark. For me vertical for trials type riding, bars inline with forks, when viewed from the side - which is usually the zero mark, and best for enduro, downhill type riding.
Neil you relate this stuff really well mate, there is no substitute for hours on the bike & tweaks, far more important than many vids out there encouraging lads and lasses to spend & constantly empty your pockets, that don't make you faster, constant practice does. Lovely smooth style you have there.
All great stuff, a very informative video from Neil. One thing that wasn’t mentioned though which is crucial to how comfortable your ride, is the the position of the brake levers and the other controls. They all need to be in as natural a position as possible in relation to your hands. Too many times I’ve seen bikes with the brake levers butted right against the grips, huge no-no!! Take the time to set up your brake lever angle, lever reach and position on the bars, and reap the rewards with little to zero arm pump 💪
i put a 27.5 wheel on the back of my trek rail 9.8 (DHR 2 2.8 tire) and a 29 2.6 up front. I really like this setup and recommend to anyone that does alot of aggressive trail riding.
I just bought the last trek rail available in the pacific north west”Oregon”. It’s the 7. Wanted the 9.7 but not available till may here??? Thought about putting a 27.5 on the rear and changing the bars, race face atlas with 1&1/4” rise How does your bike ride? More enduro/ down hill feel? Quicker in and out of corners??

Probably picking up a new garmin next week. Been riding post canyon in hood river. A friend and I are looking to head up to Bellingham soon as well. Thanks for the info on your wheels. Just ordered the bars to bring the front up. I come from BMX and somewhat new to mt bikes and I’m definitely sold on the dope! Lol
I got an Neuron, but this spectral looks sick and is equipped pretty well 🥰 Btw no more additional customization from my side, except for maybe putting some frame protection stickers on the back of your bike, mine got pretty soon damaged there from small stones hitting the frame 😱
I would love a long segment on tuning strategies for the motor. I have Giant Ride Control with 5 modes. Example how to get more ride time and still have a few settings for steep climbs.

6. Set sag correctly. Don't ride down the canal towpath thinking you're not using all the travel! 7. Try different components and setups, don't assume what you're riding is right just because that's what the pros have. 8. Get your gears dialled correctly, skipping gears can ruin a ride. 9. Sort your brakes, centre the rotor and setup lever throw and bite point. 10. Setup your suspension, you may not think it, but rebound and HSC and SSC make a massive difference.
My bike came adjusted for my weight but sag was small and suspension harsh. I bought a shock pump and dropped 10 psi out of fork and shock. Heaps nicer.
I received my Trek rail 7 roughly 2 weeks ago and not touched any of it. I've been out half a dozen times basically learning how to ride a Ebike. Weird. I wanted to take about a foot off each end of the bars to start with as never road anything so wide but was advised (strongly) to try and stick with it. I'm open to all suggestions but hoping the designers of this beast know what and why they specked what they did. Thanks for sharing
Hi Rob interesting bike check, have you worked out total cost of all the changes & do you think you can buy a better bike for less. Having said this we all like to mess with our bikes, thanks keep em coming.
Hey Neil, thanks for that video. How much pressure do you use in your e-bike? I have pretty much your height and weight. I'm more Enduro than xc. My tires are MAXXIS mignon and dfh 2.8 27.7. 170mm front suspension and 150mm back. Thanks in advance 😁🤞 Cheers and keep it up
@Neil of castle EMBN (thanks for the helpful vid!) Care to share what bike seat (the one we’re not supposed to mind 😋) you are using on your spectral ? Have a yepp mini on my acoustic mtb but it’s a clunky afair with the obligatory a-head adapter for my stem and limited turn radius with the foot holders in place. What’s your experience with going riding with your kids and full sus emtb (love the adventure potential.... weeeeee :) ) and do you adjust your fork settings to compensate for the extra weight (or are you not bothered)?
Every time I see a video like this where a guy mentions how bloody important tire pressure is, he NEVER mentions what pressure he’s running! And yeah, I know it depends on riding conditions and the riders weight and tire choice and a ton of other factors, but just once I’d love to hear a guy say, “In this case, with these Maxxis tires on this particular bike, I’m running 22psi front & 24psi rear!”. 💀
