April is a superb student. Most women should study her just to learn how to learn. Her attitude is amazing and she does not seem to feel personally attacked by constructive criticism. That makes her one in about 5 million.

@@andrewc6538 Sure, I'll agree with that. However, I was responding to MbanziSD, whose wife blames her troubles on his supposed teaching impatience. Almost every guy who has tried to coach his girlfriend or wife has had that experience. I've successfully taught skills to several women, but I can't really claim success in teaching any of my girlfriends. I've also failed at teaching women who have poor learning attitudes. Those types of women are why women-only clinics thrive. I've never had a problem coaching men. BTW, I think it's a shame - my favorite activities are male-dominated, but women are as capable and can be as proficient as men. I have learned much from women, especially in regard to finesse vs. brawn. It's far more enjoyable for me if there are women sharing the experience. I prefer the mix of feminine and masculine energies.

Here's something I haven't seen addressed in other cornering videos but I'm always wondering about. The corners on my trails don't always look as pristine and open as these since im in new England. How do you navigate more "technical" rocky/rooty corners or ones that may also come with an incline and require some pedaling. Is it generally preferable to have your seat down when cornering?

Cornering at speed is one thing that's really holding my MTB fun back, especially on flat. I saw this last night and then spent this morning on tarmac doing the drills above and it's *insane* how much more rooted I felt to the ground. Hit a trail afterwards and was so much quicker and more confident, now I've just got to figure out how to hit the jump after the last corner about twice as fast as I normally do!

What's so valuable to me about this video is seeing how a true novice would perform a technique poorly, and then seeing it visually compared with correct technique (the annotated stills are fantastic!) So often skilled instructors show you the right way of doing something, and when they try to imitate the "wrong" way, it just looks odd, because they can't do it naturally. :-) Huge thank you to both of you for using this invaluable pedagogical technique so that we n00bs can really see what can go wrong and how to improve on it.

This video was the most helpful of all the cornering vids I've watched. I recently took a clinic where we focused on these cornering techniques, but I became frustrated for not getting it quicker. This vid helped to reassure me that this takes a ton of practice and may not be mastered in a few hours. I plan to persevere with pilons in the parking lot. Thank you!

I have been riding a long time and this is one of the BEST videos I have ever seen on cornering techniques. I love April's attitude as well. You guys make it really easy to just relax and learn. The fact that April is a 'novice' and getting results due to your coaching is very encouraging as well. A lot of experts just gloss over stuff and don't fill in the blanks and you simply fail when you try to do as they suggest. Hi Kyle & April, This is John from India. I just bought a new basic MTB bike for my son who is 10 years now. He started to do some basic stunts like jumping, skidding, etc... but gets hurt most of the time when he tries something new as he is not aware of the skills and tricks. He mentioned going to the basketball court to fool around. I always suggest to people that when they are waiting for other riders to show up, spend the time playing on their bikes instead of just sitting there. Practice anything, track stands, bunny hops, see how small a figure eight you can ride. It’s all good!

Just found your channel, and this style of video is amazing! It’s rare to find someone actually teaching, so us noobs can see what a real session looks like, and then to also have all the exercises to learn a skill broken out and given in such an easy to apply way is great! I was also not knowing where to practice, as schools are always using the fields, and never even thought of the outdoor arena/basketball courts until seeing this. So practicing just got much simpler for me

Just wanted to say thanks for teaching this old dog (60 next year) some new tricks. I've been using the Covid lockdown here in Sydney to get out on the dirt, and try to drill "bike/body separation". Using that phrase in my self-talk has helped bring new confidence to my cornering.

These are the most detailed instructional videos that I have seen on RU-vid. However there is one simple cornering tip that I never see emphasizing enough in any video. A tip that helps in any turn. The tip is to simply turn your body in the direction that you are turning by turning your hips in that direction. This makes much more of difference then it seems like it should. If you are looking ahead through the turn you will unconsciously do this to some degree, but by consciously being aware of this it help to always make sure that you use this technique. This is something that I always think about when I’m riding. To be fair most instructional videos or articles will mention this this but they usually throw it in with other instructions, they usually don’t mention how effective it is in and of itself. Maybe a lot people intuitively do this but it toke me a while to figure this out. PS - I give April lots of credit for showing her mistakes in the videos, these are mistakes that we all make and they are helpful to see.

Agree on the comments about Kyle's as an amazing teacher. I have just come back to mountain bking after a 25 year break! These videos are helping me recover my form. I used to do some racing, but find it's best to be humble and just start from the beginning as a beginner. You two are a wonderful pair and truly help me. Many thanks!

1. Incredible coaching. I wish I had this kind of instruction when I started riding trails. 2. April seems to improve faster than I did. Probably a mix of talent and great coaching. 3 I've been using the wrong technique for years and wondered why bad stuff was happening, now I know why. 4. Where the heck were you when I was learning all this? I went over the bars, slid off the trail, down cliffs, into cars, other riders, in the corners, in the flats, in areas most riders would think was impossible to crash (I think I even invented new kinds of crashing). Excellent video Kyle, and of course, April makes it so much more fun to watch.

The best breakdown of the how's and why's of cornering I've seen to date. I'll definitely be using this to work with my wife on her cornering. This was great Kyle. When I watched it, I thought "I already do that", but then when I went out and started thinking about it more actively, I realized I'm inconsistent, and often forget on more aggressive turns.

When I first started improving my ability to corner by leaning the bike, I had a tendency to brake too much going into the turn but I had to force myself to go into it with more speed than I was initially comfortable with, and just send it. if you're going too slow then the technique doesn't really work that well but if you're going fast enough to where you HAVE to lean the bike and keep your weight on the outside in order to make it through without crashing, that's when it gets fun and forces you to really remember to use that skill

Kyle & April - Ride Mtb My corners were a whole lot better. I practiced it on my usual tricky spot but got it down after two turns. Definitely made my ride a little easier.
