1. Roland Percussion Set
Some specific Roland modules like TD-8, 9, 10, 12, 20, 30 and most likely the TD-50 have a MIDI input and feature Percussion Sets that are triggered by an external slave module. Just connect the “Midi out” of your Alesis Trigger IO, Roland TMC-6 or TD-4 to the “Midi input” of your Roland master module. The slave module becomes a trigger interface and sends plain midi signals to the master. The master takes the signals and generates a sound out of its own instrument selection.
This way it is possible to connect a lot more pads. The secondary module has to be set to MIDI Channel 11, but this is not possible with every module. The Roland TD-3, for example, does not feature MIDI Channel 11 and can therefore not be used as a secondary module.
The slave modules sounds are uninteresting, as it is only a plain midi converter in such a setup. It does not transfer audio signals, but Midi signals.
The Percussion Set is basically an instrument selection of the master module, which can be modified independently from the main drum kits. All master module instruments can be assigned and triggered through the slave module.
This TD-20x, for example, has 8 percussion sets that are independent of the main kits and do not get changed when scrolling through your drum kits.
Sadly the Roland TD-11, 15 and 25 do not feature a MIDI Input nor a Percussion set. They can only be slaves, not masters.
Hack:
The 2 chained modules can be connected to a PC or Mac via the MIDI or USB cable of the master module. The whole setup can now trigger EZdrummer2.
2. Drumsplitters
Some Roland modules (show the modules) can be extended with drumsplitters. You find them in the form of y-cables or boxes with 3 jack inputs. These devices split the 2 zones of a dual zone pad into 2 mono pads. The drum splitter is not a regular y-cable. It has to have a built-in 100K Ohm resistor to be able to work.
Both, toms and cymbal become mono triggers after splitting. That means there is no choke function available for the cymbal pad and it is also not possible to hit both split pads at the same time because the module recognises this as a rim shot.
A lot of trigger adjustments have to be made in the module to use drumsplitters. Therefore it is but still only a compromise, but also a nice and cheap solution to add extra pads.
Drumsplitters do not work for physical reasons with TD-1, 3 and 6 as these modules are wired differently. And I would not use them for software reasons with TD-4 and TD-25. Those 2 do not allow you to assign the pad zones independently, which is vital to even use a drumsplitter.
3. Module into Module
Almost every E-drum module has a stereo input for MP3-Players. Connect the headphone out of the second module to the MP3 input of the primary module. This works with all kinds of e-drum modules. You can also connect both modules to a mixing desk. Same result, you could end up with different module sounds if you don’t use identical modules though. This is a low budget version that serves the purpose.
4. EZdrummer2
Ezdrummer2 and SD2.0 allow you to connect 2 or more modules simultaneously via MIDI interface or direct USB to your PC. I plugged this TD-30 via direct USB into my Mac and an additional TD-20X via MIDI Cable into a Tascam MIDI interface, which is connected to the Mac via USB cable as well. The TD-30 Module driver and Tascam interface driver have to be installed and that’s it. Both modules trigger one digital drum kit.
This method works with any e-drum module.
5. ESI Midimate eX
The ESI Midimade eX is a special MIDI to USB adapter that has 2 Midi ports on one side and a USB plug on the other side. You can connect 2 modules to your PC and trigger any drum sample software with both modules simultaneously. This would be ideal for TD-11 or 15 users.
There is a guy on youtube who built a huge metal e-drum kit with 2x Roland TD-12 modules. He uses a MIDImate. The link is in the description.

I’m a bit late I know but great tips here. I use your no.1 tip with the Alesis Strike MultiPad together with the Roland TD4. It works much better going through an extra device than using the external triggers on the SMP.

Very nice and well explained video, as a TD-3 owner I never new about the percussion sets capability. I can say that the drum splitter works for the TD-3 but only in the snare input, so as you said, is a compromise, you will need to get rid of the snare rimshot
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 7 лет назад
Well I know after watching your video:) The splitter is usually made for leftover zones like a tom rim IMO, but it is cool what you got out of the TD-3.

The TD-6v does have a percussion set and midi input. It also lets you choose the percussion set midi channel so you can use a TD-3 (which only sends on channel 10) as a slave module to trigger the percussion set on the TD-6v. Great video and channel, by the way.
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
That's awesome. that makes the TD-6 actually a great module. Have you tried with a TD-3?
@drummerjfa1728
@drummerjfa1728 6 лет назад
Vdrum Tips Yes, I have a TD-6v with a TD-3 as the slave module which I use as a back up to my main kit (TD-9 with a TD-4 as a slave module). I agree, the TD-6 is definitely a great module.
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
That's nice to know. My next question is: How good is the VH-11 with the TD-6?
@drummerjfa1728
@drummerjfa1728 6 лет назад
Vdrum Tips I don't think the TD-6 benefits from using a VH-11. That's why my main module is a TD-9.

I am converting my acoustic kit to a triggered mesh-kit with Roland module and cymbal pads. This channel has really helped me learn more about Roland, noise eater platforms, mesh heads, triggers and lots more. Awesome! If there is something I would like to see in the future is a video on connecting midi out to the audio interface, and actually record drums to a pre-recorded song. Does it work well? Is there any latency issues when playing along and recording at the same time? What other options are there? //Simon from Sweden
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 7 лет назад
Thanks, that means a lot to me! It does work well and it is really simple. You just use a DAW, the song on one track and the drum software in another midi track. That's it. But I am thinking about making a detailed EZD2 Setup which covers that aswell. Latency does not have to be an issue if you have either a MAC or the ASIO Driver installed.

This was a great video. I just bought Superior Drummer 3 and I didn't know the best way to connect both my TD30 and SPDX to my laptop. I would have figured it out but the video saved me some time and it actually provided me another of doing it. Option one is to connect both via USB into my laptop and option two is to use my double MIDI/USB cable into my laptop, which would use only one USB port. Thanks for the video.

How to connect the extra cymbal to the TD-1 module? Does the cable snake have an extra cable?
@David_Camerwrongun
@David_Camerwrongun 2 года назад
I've just gone to Yamaha directly to build me a 12 piece fully customised electric kit all the bells and whistles and ran into exact this problem. I had two options - Multiple modules and I spider web of cables or get Yamaha to build me a one off custom setup as 12 drums with rim shot + 6 - 8 mute capable cymbals exceeds anything they have in the factory. Decided to go with the one off so I can expand in the future, hook up a soundboard and have as much of a realistic response as an acoustic kit. Waiting for the bill and the heart attack that will follow shortly after
@alensiljak

#3, technically you **can** connect two different, but very similar modules, i.e. TD-11 & TD-4 are very good complementary modules. I'm currently using that option now it works great because the sounds are pretty much identical between these series.

Why do you say not to use drum splitters with other modules? Most modules support the use of splitters, including Alesis and ATV modules. As far as I know, most non-Roland modules use standard Y-splitters and not those with resisters.

If you have two modules, both connected on separate usb, won't the VST get confused by them using the same midi notes and/or channels? Or is it smart enough to differentiate between the two? I ask because i'm interested in having two modules connected to superior drummer or a DAW running it as a plugin.
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
Well, you do not have to send the same Midi notes. Module 1 can send the note range 1-50 and Module 2 can send 51-127. The VST would not care where the signal is coming from. It could be confused if one driver is used for 2x the same product. But if you do this via Midi cable, you can do this with as many modules as possible. There are reversed MIDI splitters available with 3 inputs and one output.

Just to be sure before i do this. Can i hook the TD17 up to the TD4 with a midi cable, then use all the TD17 sounds like this video shows which is older and does not show the TD17 at all.. Then when i use the 1/4 outputs for live recording to the board, it all will work fine (using all TD17 sounds?) I have it set up independently but the TD17 can run sampled cymbals and i have tons of nicer sounds then the TD4....So right now they are just both running with outputs to the board, would be nicer to have two board stereo slots used and not 4, etc etc... Is it this same procedure as this video shows, just with my TD17 as the module and TD4 as the slave5? And or is there a guide for this somewhere that explains it more in depth as well?? Thanks all!

I have 3 modules, the Alesis dm5' the Alesis I/o and the Roland td11, the best way for me for a quick live setup would be to use the dm5 for percussion/ extra pads, and the TD 11 as master, currently I have the td 11 with 7 cymbal pads using your splitter method, that sill allows me to have a 3 zone ride and rim and head on the snare, a small mixer and both modules and you have a very reliable live setup, of course better setup will be with the I/o and the td11 and EZ drummer2 still very reliable live. I have Steven slate drums and it never crashed with my old laptop, never had any latency either. Not too great for drum covers because he sound sets are identical to the originals so the parts you play fade away with the original, unless a drum less track is used.....

Great video, as always. May I ask you a question? I just bought a Roland TD-25KV, and plan to add more pads (1x11" and 1x14" triggera cymbals and 2xRoland BT-01. Planning to hook them to a Roland TM-2, output MIDI from the TD-25 to the TM-2, and connect it back to the TD-25 by aux port). I'm having a hard time finding Gibraltar hardware (or any other brand except expensive Roland stuff) to mount the additional TM-2 module. Do you have an idea on how I could mount the TM-2 to the TD-25KV rack, so it would be placed near the main module, and it would take as little space as possible in the rack? You're a very ingenious guy. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion, if you had the time. Thanks a lot!

Why would you want to connect the TD25 midi out to the TM2 if the TM 2 has triggers connected? :) A Roland Rack Clamp is ideal, as the bigger metal rack clamps take too much space away. I would recommend to check ebay for a standard plastic Roland Rack clamp.

Thanks a lot for your answer and suggestion. "Why would you want to connect the TD25 midi out to the TM2 if the TM 2 has triggers connected?" The TD-25 module doesn't have MIDI in, only out. So, I won't be able to feed the TM-2 into the TD-25 mix. So what I need to do is to feed the TD-25 mix (MIDI out) into the TM-2 (MIDI in), and go from there. Or am I making a big mistake here?

they are standard audio splitter cables stereo to 2 mono. no electronics inside. no issues with simultaneous pad hits :) and I miscounted (silly me) I have 12 inputs

Very helpful video, thanks! I see that TD-9 beats TD-11 functionally.But what to you think about TD-9 compared to TD-11 sound-wise? Which module produces more realistic and rich drum sounds?
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
Gleb Novikov The sounds of TD-11 and 9 are almost identical. The TD-11 has this “Realistic trigger function” but there is not really a difference. I would always fo for the TD-9. It is a much better deal.

Thank you! Is it true that both modules have two extra inputs and you can add two fully functional extra pads or cymbals without need to use second module or splitters? So the 5 ways described in the video are needed only if you want to connect more than two extra pads?

Hey you know I think that the TD k70 should be a bigger version of the TD 50 and I think that the TD 70 should carry all the sounds that Roland has ever made from the first td1 on up to the the new TD k70 🤔

Great video, thank you for sharing all this info with us! Do you know if it's possible to connect a slave module to a Roland TD-27? If so what would be the best slave option? I've tried using splitters with two CY12's but for some reason the "rim" pad cannot be hit in unison with the digital snare. Very frustrating.

You can connect the TD-17 as a slave to the TD-6 as master. But that wouldn't be ideal. Who wants the TD-6 sounds? :D

Thanks for this video and info. So, I have a TD9 V2. Which module would be my best bet for using in conjunction with it? I use Addictive Drums VST exclusively and never use the onboard sounds. I'd like to add about three more pads and three or four more cymbals. Should I just look for a used TD-20 and slave them together? Thanks again.
@Vdrumtips1
@Vdrumtips1 6 лет назад
Well you can add a TMC-6 or an Alesis Trigger IO. This will be cheaper than a TD-20.
@smitty78787878
@smitty78787878 6 лет назад
True. I'd like to upgrade the main module a bit though and have access to positional sensing. The TD9 is a good module but I feel like it's a little dated. For instance, I don't get any response from MIDI values lower than 6 so very quiet playing simply doesn't trigger at all. This isn't an issue using the internal sounds but it IS an issue when triggering addictive drums. I've never been able to figure out why this happens. I hopeful that a more modern, robust module will help to iron out some of these little inconsistencies. A TD20 IS expensive. Perhaps a TD12 would be more cost effective.

Splitter cables are always a compromise and not easy to adjust if you do not fully uderstand the parameters. I would suggest to expand your drumset with a slave module. A splitter cable with a TD-50 is like a race car with cartwheels.
