I’m 64 and have been divorced since my husband ran off with another woman in 1999. A few years later there were a couple of short lived and failed relationships (not marriages). Being divorced and alone certainly wasn’t my first choice for my life. My daughter moved away at 18 and my son lived with me until recently but moved away as well. So I’ve just become a full fledged empty nester living alone and it’s quite an adjustment. I’m so grateful for your RU-vid channel. It’s very helpful in navigating life alone. Thank you so much. Connecting with you and this community of single ladies is my saving grace. It helps me so much to know that I’m not “really” alone because there are so many others out there that are like me.

After my divorce it was an adjustment for a year being on my own. I had to learn to cook and make decent coffee. I initially got a Saturday job for fun. I met a wonderful circle of new friends and renovated an old house. I reconnected with a wonderful woman. My one take away was to focus on things I enjoyed doing. My wonderful woman and I enjoy estate sales and “treasure hunting” on Saturday’s. We both turned 70 this year and treasure our non martial bliss. Peace

Wow you lived my life!😄 My son just left some months ago also...it is an adjustment but it's become actually nice. I changed my place a little and made my bathroom yellow😁 it's peaceful. I work still so that's good but sometimes I'm glad when I'm off to get away from that atmosphere. You'll slowly get on with life and be alright. Go with the flow🥰

I agree. I've lived alone out in the country steadily now for about 8 years. It's good to have other people in a support system in case of illness or emergencies. There are people nearby and we help each other out in these cases.

A few years ago, after 2020, I went to see the Doobie Brothers by myself. I had such a great time that I decided to go to more concerts in the future. I've seen some great comedians and musicians by myself. Since I just need one ticket, I usually have my pick of seats! Don't wait to have fun!

I'm the same! Quite accustomed now to living by myself, but don't know anyone who would like to go with me to jazz venues for instance. I've dragged a friend along before to a few things but our tastes are just too different for her to really enjoy it. I do miss my ex husband in this respect because he really did love the same kinds of music. Oh well ... what will be, will be.

I am 68 years old, twice divorced, and have been living alone since 1999. Completely content and happy. I've never been lonely in my life. I've been traveling (alone) quite a bit since I retired, and it's been great. I do have children and grandchildren that I speak to often, although I don't see them often. I'm not quite a hermit....lol I do have 2 cats and a dog that share my life.

I want to add that I wasn’t aware before a neighbour pointed this out to me (she & her husband, after a long marriage, can’t separate due to financial situation, now live together like siblings😮) that many people are forced to stay together for financial reasons. So I am very grateful I can manage money-wise alone. We must squeeze out gratitude wherever we can 😂.

I was just saying to my daughter this morning, how I love living alone. I have a cat that puts her little face up to me in the mornings and gives me a kiss. Yes of course I have had men in my life who would obviously do thatand that was fine at the time but now its just me and my 2 cats. I am contented and happy with that. I am a reader, you learn so much from books. But that is something I started doing at 7 years of age. I love the simple things in life, with maybe a little bit of travel thrown in. I think all us women of a certain age just want to feel contentment, wherever that may come from.

This is always my kinda topic. After losing my wonderful husband in 2009, I finished raising our two kids and have never remarried or lived with anyone. It was an enormous adjustment and took a long time to get back on track. I now feel content and so grateful to have had him for the time I did and for our two kids who are thriving thankfully. I love to travel and overall feel incredibly fortunate.

Hello Margaret, there are many positive aspects to living alone, but still there is a stigma placed upon some of us. Many people are quick to claim that to be healthy, and live longer one must live with others and share large portions of life in social situations. Personally, I never feel alone, especially when surrounded by the beauty of nature. Senior Centers are not my cup of tea! Surely it is better to be alone, than spend time with people one has nothing in common with. Financially, living alone can be challenging, but living with someone who likes to spend can be too. I love the companionship of pets, and being able to live life in harmony with my values. Being resilient is so important to me, and I have had to deal with a couple of serious medical issues with only very minimal support from family who do not live close. Excellent topic Margaret, and as well beautifully navigated. You always look so lovely!

I agree. As an introvert, being around people I don't know well for to long can be exhausting and unpleasant. As for the trope that living alone is unhealthy thats not true for everyone. For me, toxic relationships are more unhealthy.

I’ve lived alone for about 12 years and never felt lonely until I was laid off during COVID. It was a bad time to “retire” by force, but I got over the loneliness quickly and started really enjoying living alone. I worked on my house and started painting. The downside is being sick and having to take care of myself and my dog. My kids are close and certainly would help, but it’s not the same as having a person living with me. When as soon as I am over any illness I’m super happy to be on my own! Three things I like about myself are my independence, my creativity, and my sense of humor! Thank you Margaret for creating this amazing channel for us aging beautiful people ❤

Hi Margaret! I didn't marry Until age 36, and my husband died suddenly at age 53, almost 22 years ago. We were childless by choice, and so at almost 74 Ive lived alone for a long time now. Both my mother and husband were difficult to be around at times, and very demanding. So, I have to admit I really enjoy living alone and want nothing to do with controlling people. This life suits me! Of course its lonely at times but the alternative does not appeal to me. I do what I want when I want and am dependent on no one. 🌺

Margaret, I absolutely love you! I don't know HOW I'd navigate this period of my life without you and our community family. Having said that, I've been single for over twenty years..first widowed. Then, I had a fiance, but, things didn't work out, and, he is also deceased now. I live in a small apartment upstairs from my son and his family (wife & child), yet, often feel terribly lonely. It may sound silly, but I'm the type of woman who liked being part of a couple. I have only two friends.. both live in FL, and, I'm in NY. No social circle..the bingo thing is NOT for me. Reading used to be more for me, but having to wear readers and even then, my vision isn't as sharp, has made it less enjoyable. Yes, I tend towards depression and anxiety. I see little of my daughter and her family; unfortunately, she is estranged from my son. I know things could be a lot worse, but I'm finding it extremely difficult to enjoy this last segment of life. Sorry for the rant. I want to express so much love and appreciation...you are a lifeline! Thank you for addressing this very relevant topic and always being there for us. Rosemarie ❤❤❤

Hi Rosemarie. Thank you for sharing your story. I do understand what you’re going through a choice, but how are you going to spend this last segment of your life. I hope you can choose for a happier direction. You’ve got nothing to lose to be happy. Leave behind the things that have made you sad. You have no control over that now. But you do have control over the next few years of your life, it’s your life make it beautiful and happy please 🌺

Home is where the heart is. I think making our living space as comfortable as possible helps a great deal when those "lonely" moments come. I enjoy lots of books, plants, art work on my walls, a large herbal apothecary, outdoor garden, sewing room and art supplies. I live in a small mobile home. Sometimes when I go out to run errands and I come home I feel a total sense of privacy and relaxation when I enter my place. I make it a sanctuary from the world. And, I don't have a lot of money. I love to hunt swap meets, garage sales, and thrift stores for unique things for my space. I go for walks often too. This is how I comfort myself and maintain my physical and emotional health.

The average age to become a widow in the US is 59. So there will be lots of women living alone for perhaps many years and this is a wonderful topic to discuss. I remember my aunts and grandmothers living alone as widows for 40+ years and they were always busy and seemingly happy. They cooked for others, traveled, belonged to organizations, churches, had hobbies, attended school programs, etc. They just kept busy and none remarried!

Giving yourself regular mental challenges, especially creative ones.(Drawing, sewing, painting, whatever, they renew your mind and spirit). And appreciating the people you DO have in your life, even if you don't see them as often as you'd like to. The more you appreciate them and the relationship, the better your life will be. Always liked the notion of “The Golden Girls”. But as it turns out I’m just “A Dull Girl”. But I’m actually ok with that. As been said, no one to answer to, no basic restrictions. It does get lonely. But that is only a state of mind, you have to amuse and think for yourself. However, the human touch is a key component and that is something we all need. Sometimes just connecting from some random interaction is good for the soul.

Thank you, I just recently started living alone after leaving a bad marriage of 35 yrs and health issues. I figured it's better to live alone than live in a bad marriage, it hasn't been that long yet, only a month but for the most part I feel better living alone but it's also still fresh and a big adjustment for me because it's also the first time I've ever lived alone and I'm in my mid 50's now. I have my sister and her family close by (my family are all in another province) so I'm thankful to at least have my sister and her family (which is my family as well lol). I'm so grateful for coming across your video and reading the comments below has been helpful as well. Thank you❣

You are so right. I am 83 years old but I’m a positive person. I was lucky to have had two good marriages, sadly I lost my second husband only 20 months ago. However although I don’t have any children, my step children are so supportive. I travel as much as I can abroad as well as on buses, as I don’t drive. Just today I went on another little adventure. I am obviously concerned about the future, but I try to take each day as it comes.

If you live alone it's very important to get a fixed routine going that occupies most of your time, err on the side of having too much to do rather than too little. Once you introduce structure then you have less time to focus on your loneliness... this takes some time but nowadays with meetup groups etc. it's easier than ever to have something to do.

I have been living alone forever actually I had a live-in partner for about a year and when he left I decided that was it no more levins. I dated after that but no more living. I am actually quite happy with my own company and I always have been. I'm just like my dad in that respect we have never ever needed needed another person's company to be happy it's not that I don't like other people I just don't need them with me all the time when I was working sometimes I just wanted to run and hide people just irritated me to no end and I was a medical professional so I couldn't very well do that. I had to be present in my job I mean I wasn't always wanting to leave but there were times I was almost happy when I became disabled in 2018 I had thought I could work until I was 70 nope didn't happen I am only 66 and I've been disabled since I was 60. Margaret I just absolutely love your channel. I love listening to you and I love your jewelry. I just think you're awesome. Thank you so much for everything you have done. I lost a couple years in there I don't remember why but there was a while that I think I didn't have internet or something or maybe I was just too busy moving and that type of thing because I moved from town in Michigan to another and then I moved to Missouri my home state and I have never been happier. I am saddened because I left behind in Michigan my very best friend. We do get to talk on the phone occasionally but I miss her so much.

Hi Margaret. I don't spend a lot of time on my cell phone, but I'm so happy that I can come here and see your pretty face and listen to your kindness and caring. It means a lot to me. I'm 68, married for 40 years to my husband who is 14 years older than me. He's really slowing down and I'm aging backward. (Healthier and happier than I've ever been due to healthy diet and exercise.) So I worry about feeling trapped....made to feel guilty if i leave him alone or go do the things he can't physically do anymore. I haven't had any real friends that live close to me but a year ago a 72 year old woman and her husband built a house and moved in right down the road. She's fun, she's in good shape....smart, (ex-FBI). I enjoy her company and intend to do more things with her if i can. Her husband's not in the best health, so I guess we're on a journey together in a way. I'm the kind of person who doesn't mind being alone though. As a matter of fact my husband retired 20 years ago and I've never had the opportunity to spend days alone since. I feel guilty about missing any kind of alone time, but I sure could use some. Catch 22 I guess.

I’m 64 and live alone. It’s a difficult time and I wish that it wasn’t. I’d like to just be enjoying my life now. I have some anxiety and depression and I live life with that hanging over me like an unwelcome house guest. I often wonder how I’d be different without that hanging around. Feels like it has stolen my life to some degree. I’m not sure what this time in my life will be all about because I’ve done most of the things that I wanted to do. I don’t think I want a serious live-in boyfriend, but it would definitely be nice to have a life partner. It would have to be a loving person. My past relationships have been unhealthy and I’m very done with that. Sometimes I wonder what the point of life at this stage actually is.

The point is you are alive. It's your time. It's time to make yourself happy. Wear nice clothes that you like. Don't let anyone dictate to you. Look at the beauty of nature. Appreciate the little things like the shape of a leaf or the magic of a new season. You really are worth it. Smile and appreciate your freedom to please yourself.

I’ve been married for almost 30 years to a good man. I fear the day that I find myself alone. I hope we both live long lives together until the end. My 91 year old Mom just lost my Dad after 67 1/2 years married. I put her into a luxury senior living with many other 90+ year olds. She loves being around the other residents. The dining room is a great place where they all talk about their lives and share stories. So many activities and happy hours with live music too. You could never be lonely there.

They’re quite a few companies now where they will match you with someone where you can rent a room and someone else’s house. You Margaret. You give me strength to live this life on my own. Widowed for 9 years this month. Such a struggle to just function let alone cope with the loneliness. But with time and giving myself a lot of patience it’s working out. Of course there are still moments but they get less and less. I figure I am here for a reason and so I carry on. Listening to your thoughts and words are important in my daily routine. Thank you for that. Good friends can be best.

Oh boy I do agree that living alone can be wonderful but I've had several surgeries over the last few years and I am grateful for the help of my boyfriend of 20 years although he has his own place. I just found out I need my gallbladder removed so that will be another hurdle to get over. I would appreciate any recommendations you would have for that healing process ❤
@sixtyandme
@sixtyandme 7 месяцев назад
Hi Kathleen. Well, as you may know, I had my gallbladder removed last year. The actual recovery was very straightforward, although my liver enzyme levels did go up and so for several months. I was very careful about what I ate, and that in fact, did bring things down to the right level. I think I have been eating a little too much fat :-) so I think that will be the most important healing process for you to take on. What’s your diet, exercise, work with your doctor to make sure your liver enzymes are OK and for me losing a bit of weight help too it will be fine. This is a very straightforward and common operation and I think you’re healing will go very well. Wishing you the best.

My daughter and granddaughter (age21) live with me. The way I manage is to go away on mini vacation...started with a few days, and now go for up to 3 weeks. I combine staying with friends and staying at Airbnb. It has been very restorative. I've been separated from my husband for 2 years.. married for almost 40. So I consider being in transition now. It’s a challenge. But you can do it! You are working now so start to look for a way to transition to a part time job that you can do from home to supplement your social security or other pension. How can you cut costs? Do you have a house that you can sell for a less expensive place? What skills do you have? There are so many work from home options. Best to speak with a financial advisor or life coach. Hope you find a way.
