Great tips Jason. I always learn something from your posts. I also use a mashup of a couple of these techniques for some problem spots. Work sawdust into a void then flood with thin CA glue. Finally, rub a little more sawdust over the top. I’ve used this with small voids when turning and it blends in nicely.

Great video Johnathon. Woodturners also use coffee grounds and CA. Also we sometimes accentuate the flaw and turn it into a feature by filling with brass powder or a colored resin or crushed mineral.

Do you think you have to worry about setting some thing warm or hot on that area (in the case of a countertop) where you use the glue gun because it may re-melt the glue?!
@foxwoodworking8759
@foxwoodworking8759 11 месяцев назад
@@christazitko476 I don't believe it would melt, it's not actually glue but nylon which melts at 268C. I have been using it now for over a year and it works great.

Thank you for the information. I wasn't looking forward to about 20 knotty alder doors and epoxy. I am going to use the rangate and trusting that you haven't seen any problems with shrinkage on interior doors. Crossing fingers.

I haven’t experienced issues personally. It’s good for a lot of uses I think. Epoxy would be much stronger option.

Hi Jason. Recently laid some light oak flooring with some large knot holes. Going to try the hot glue method. What’s the best gun on the market now, and although it’s light wood the knots are dark so would think black would be good. Great videos and thanks for the tips.

Excellent demonstration video. I didn’t know about the hot glue gun. I’m wondering how it links under different finishes especially lacquer.
@bentswoodworking
@bentswoodworking 5 лет назад
It isn’t literally hot glue. I should have been more clear in the video I think. It is a proprietary blend designed to be suitable for these applications. According to the website it takes finishes just fine. I don’t have a lot of experience with that just yet.

Great video, quick question for you can you use the titebond and sawdust to fill in a hole in the wood instead of using something like an epoxy. Lets say it a chuck missing of 1/8 deep by about 1 inch by 1 inch.
@bentswoodworking
@bentswoodworking Год назад
I would probably use epoxy for something that size
@edlupia5369

Love the video regarding ways to fill cracks and holes. I have a piece of black walnut bar rail that has a hole from knot that fell out leaving a hole about the size of a dime that penetrates the entire piece of rail approximately one and a half inches thick and perforates slightly through the back end. I would love to be able to use the knot gun as you demonstrate however this is a single-use type of application so don't want to invest that type of money as I don't foresee using it in the future. So options left are using black epoxy to fill in hole or the method that seems easier the black ca method that you show. However the hole is huge. So I was wondering if I could use a combination of the techniques? Maybe using a walnut wood filler which I have in my possession to fill the whole approximately 95% letting that dry overnight and then applying the black ca method to finish it off. Or would you recommend using some type of dowel or plug in combination with the ca method? Calling on your experience as I feel like I will only get one shot at getting this right. Any help would be appreciated.
@bentswoodworking

I would probably just go with epoxy for something large like to talk about

How does that "glue" do with finishes? There was an obvious "matte" look after you rubbed down the wood. Does that last?

Problem with rangate is the cost. $260+ for starter kit plus & $8.00 per glue stick. Starbond or epoxy mixed with saw dust is also good for large voids. Have had good success with that method. Great info on all the methods demonstrated.

Just ordered the knot filler, I'm going to use it to plug up knob holes and repair cabinet doors before primer. but dam that thing is super expensive. but if it saves me time filling holes and dry time I say money well spent, and if it ends up so flush so much savings in sanding I hope this works for me

When loose packing the sawdust in a crack how does it not just move out? I don’t want to use glue because I need to stain. I’m considering staining the dust or even sanding dried stained wood then regular glue or ca after. Ever tried that?
@shadowmaster335
@shadowmaster335 3 года назад
i used to take a bowl and put in saw dust and wood glue and the vigorously mix them together till they are at the point of forming clumps, then just apply that, thou it'll take awhile for the glue to dry up

Curious if water based and oil based stains are compatible with the hot glue gun method? I’m trying to figure out If water based rethunk junk stain and tuff top will work on top of a big hot glue gun knot hole.

I am doing a bed frame made of 2x4 from my local Home Depot, but they have knots, if I use the CA Glue method can I paint the 2x4 in white without the fear of knots bleeding through the paint leaving a stain mark
@bentswoodworking
@bentswoodworking 4 года назад
For lots of knots, I would suggest using epoxy. As for the bleeding issue, you would want to make sure you use a good quality primer and prime it well. I have found it very good for that reason.
