I’m getting my new Boston puppy in the next 4-5 weeks and this knowledge has helped me soooo much! I’ve worked with dogs professionally in a boarding & daycare centre for the past several years, and this has put so many of my anxieties at ease. Reinforcing good behaviour and self-soothing is so important! I’m so glad that I have found this channel, and I am going to start following this lady as well. Very happy to have this outlet! ❤️

I think it’s great information. However, I do not agree with what she said about ringing the bell to go out. If that is how you house train your dog to go to the bathroom, and you are home, there is no harm in that. It’s positive for the dog to recognize this as a tool. However, if it’s over and over again just to go out and play, that might be different. It’s like a child that is hungry or has a soiled diaper and crying. You don’t ignore that. You feed them or change them. They are building a bond and they can trust you to meet their needs.

I use a anxiety stuffed animal from Amazon that has a heartbeat and warming pad. Also a really soft small blanket he really loves too as confront. It really helped my Boston terrier sleep and have that comfort when I'm not around . I work 1030-7 however my bf's work schedule is so flexible so he's able to be around him but at times he's not he's okay with being in the cage. When we get home he just gets so excited to see us. But he doesn't cry so that's good.

This is all great information! I love the peek a boo technique of not reinforcing attention seeking behaviors that we don't want our puppy to start developing. I look forward to watching more from Sarah on training tips and techniques. This is my first puppy, having always had rescues before. And our first Boston Terrier. And at 5 weeks old she is already showing signs of being soooo smart. She has been a good girl for the most part, but we need to learn so much...and that means my husband and I mostly! lol. TY!

Wonderful tips. Leaving the house causes me anxiety because my dog is very needy but these tips are practical and the schedule is great. Especially the 9am - 4pm because ive always tried to keep them entertained all of the time. Now i can free myself to do my own projects. Thank you

Is there an appropriate age to start breaking the separation anxiety? My seven-week old is very clingy, but he's so young. Should I stop paying too much attention to him between 9am and 4pm?
@BostonTerrierSociety

That is a really good question. I would ask Sarah that on her channel. Here is a link to a video of her’s covering separation anxiety ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tDcMD90FSuM.html

Unless you are a breeder or have rescued a pup, you should not have a 7 week old puppy in the first place. Weaning should be at 8-10 weeks, possibly longer depending on the puppy or breed. Your puppy needs all the love you can give, because he should still be with his mother. I'd say that that comforting and constant physical contact should happen until pups are around three months, but alongside potty training, behavioral training, crate training, etc. It's always a process, and a multi-prong approach, but a pup at seven weeks, still needing the comfort of his mother, will need you to provide that for him for a few more weeks. (I realize this information is six months too late, but hopefully it helps someone else...)

I think that the most important top that I got from her was about the dog's sleep cycle. I am on disability so a dog would be with me all day most of the time. Knowing that they need to be alone enough to be self soothing is something that I had not considered an by not knowing , I may have created anxiety in my dogs.

My Boston has isolation distress. Although she always cries and whimpers when I come home. She is ok with someone else in the house, but again when I get home you can tell she has missed me terribly. I just love coming home to this little dog.

My girl never seemed to suffer from separation anxiety. I think there are a couple of obvious reasons. Firstly, I gave her a comfortable crate as a puppy where she spent her rest time and she went there whenever she wanted to sleep or just rest so I think she was used to having alone time on her own terms. Also we had another dog that she was used to having around from about 4 months of age so she had someone else to play with when we were out of the house. I never made a big deal of returning to the house, I pretty much ignored her until she calmed down, then I petted her etc so my absence and return was never encouraged as a highly emotional event. I also do this for any highly charged or likely emotional event, like thunderstorms or visitors or anything like that. I ignored her when she was excited, and petted when she was calm so rewarded calm, confident behaviour. This absolutely works. The other dog in the household by comparison, is not mine and was overly petted when distressed etc (she is a rescue with a neglected history) and she did definitely react when left home by herself whether my dog was there or not. She absolutely tore the house up the first time she was left and destroyed the flooring at the door. It took a long while until her owners listened to me and stopped rewarding emotional behaviour and making a fuss of her when they returned etc. She is OK now but it took quite a while.

Jack (Boston) has to be the worst case for separation anxiety ! He can just get by with a baby sitter for maybe at most 8 hours but can not be left alone other wise . My wife and I have been retired for the last 15 years and Jack is 11 years old so has always know life together with us. It can be a pain in the butt at times but we have have no choice cause Jack is Jack and life goes on.

My boyfriend and I just recently purchased a Boston (we pick him up in December.) We are planning on crate training at night. Do you think its best that we put his crate in our bedroom or in a separate room so that he can learn to self sooth !

I personally have no preference. We have tried both ways. If and when we get another puppy we will more than likely keep them in a separate room.
