From day one of getting my girl Ripley, every time I recall her ("to me") I give her a treat - a pea-sized liver treat. So when I really need her to me (recall solves a lot of problems your dog will get into) she comes every time for her treat. I've only ever really taught her three things, what I consider the dog life saving things - recall, drop it and stay. I just work on them constantly with the pea-sized little treats and she responds. I do think sometimes people try and teach their dogs too much and not concentrate on the ones that will really matter in emergencies.

I taught my two Bostons to go to their place. The place can be their bed, a mat, anywhere that is away from you . They go to their place before they go outside and while we are eating any meal. we don't have to tell they to go to their place . If they see us with a plate they automatically go to their place. Best thing i ever taught them .

How did u teach them that
@dnugent921
@dnugent921 3 года назад
Emory jones Jones I took them to the place on a leash and said “place” and then said “yes” and then gave them a treat. Then said “ free “ to release them. Did that several times. Then made them stay in place longer and longer. If they tried to leave the place I said “no” and brought them back and said “place”. I would not give a treat if they left their place without being “ free”. After I freed them I would bring them back to place and say “place” and say “yes” and then treat. You have to be consistent and practice every day!!! I hope this makes sense.

Had a champion BT growing up and she was extremely stubborn. Looking back my parents said they should have taken her to obedience school but this was in the 70s and it wasn't really a thing back then

I’ve only owned my BT for about 9 months but she was previously owned by my son who trained her very well. Now that she lives with my husband I she doesn’t always obey as well. We spoil her very much and that’s probably why she doesn’t always obey. I’ve noticed some of the things you mentioned like not responding to his name. The way that I get my BT to obey me is by using a stern voice. He seems to know that I am serious when I do this and obeys then. I am enjoying watching your videos. TFS Hugs 💕

My techniques basically are to prove and demonstrate my authority often, for example if the dog wants to pass through the door or I will take him on a walk I ask him to sit or jump, ie make some command, most of the time sit, and tell him to stay, so I open the door like this I want him to go only to my command in case he disobeys or passes in front of me I do not let him pass. I also usually give any meal or snack only after a dressage session, that is the dog will only get the reward in case he eats if he obeys me. These things work very well, nowadays my dog is well behaved, I started doing these things a few months ago and my dog is over 4 years old. And I also encourage my dog to do tricks and hindrances to agillity or I always encourage my dog to obey me or to win something simple.

What’s helped my Boston pull less on the leash was getting a vest with a chest hook instead of the ones that have the leash hook on their back. He pulls less and also helped him literally immediately be more controlled when it came to seeing or walking by other dogs/people. He was usually barking at other dogs and sometimes people too.

I completely agree with everything said in this video. The one thing I would add is start training early. We are new Boston owners and we started training day 1 and our puppy is now 9 months old and the best well behaved dog I’ve ever had or ever been around. It was very obvious from the beginning that he was going to be stubborn but we were very consistent in training him every day with the same commands until he learned them.

@@BostonTerrierSociety Unfortunately we got our Boston right before covid and we wanted to put her in puppy training classes so she could learn and I could get help with training her and she could get socialized but we went on lockdown so we're having trouble with her and she is so stubborn. We tried so many things and I think she just got confused cause we were trying all kinds of different things and shes still not fully potty trained. She won't give me signs she just squats down and pees. Now its my daughter's dog and she sleeps with her but I watch her while she's at work. She will let her mom hold her and cuddle but not me, she tries to dominate me she bites me a lot, it was really bad but its getting slightly better. I feel so lost and don't know what to do. Im so glad I found this channel, I've learned a lot.

My Boston pulls on the leash ....if I turn and go the other way she stops Boston’s are the best!
@martce
@martce 3 года назад
Pulling: I track the walks with the NikeRunClub app and if I match the BT speed, when he is heading to his fav large changing zone to poop, he pulls the leash at a 15’ pace for about 0.5 miles to reach the park he likes. Returning home it’s at a slower 23’ pace. Because of the intensive pulling, we got an easy to put on harness from Joyride, and avoid pulling on his neck. I wished he would understand that the harness and leash are synonymous with going out, but he does not like the leash. I have to bribe him with a treat for him to sit still and let both harness and leash to be connected. Be behaves as if he would like to go out without a leash, however as he runs after dogs or critters, we don’t trust he will make it back safely. It is easier for us to leave the harness on all day and take it out at night. Stubbornness: during walks he would clump down on the ground when he does not want to go to the direction I'm heading. If I get close to him, he will stand up and go where he wants too. This is the opportunity to get him to change directions. Litter food eater: if I’m not observant, he just picks up any left over food he can find, or soft tissue type paper. He has thrown-up on several occasions something that did not agreed with him when I was not quick enough to pull the leash away from the suspected item, or he ate it before I was able to pry it out of his mouth. Bathroom calls: he is beginning to make signals when he needs to go out. Even when he has to go potty, he would resist getting the leash connected to the harness and prefer to play with a toy. Once we catch him e.g. sit still with a treat and attach a leash to the harness he can’t wait to rush outside to potty.

Just started watching your Channel, been a Boston mom for about 40 years. One of my Bostons is a 4 year old singleton named Hazel. I really can't say she is stubborn, however she over thinks situations. She knows that when she is off lead at my son's home, if she goes to the property line, she will get called back/ get a treat... so that's what she does! Over and over again. When she is ready to leave sooner place, she sits by my car!

We are the proud owners of a 7 month old female BT named Daisy. We have had her since she was 11weeks old. We previously owned two Pekingese before Daisy and they also have a reputation for stubbornness. Our observations comparing the two breeds are that yes the BT is stubborn but in no way as stubborn as the pekes. Also the BT is far more affectionate and clingy than the pekes. The BT is also far more responsive to training with positive reinforcement. We are retired and fortunately we are able to give Daisy a lot of attention. Our advice is to enter your BT in a basic obedience and dog agility course. We did this and it was the best money we ever spent. You would not believe how well they perform and are so willing to please. The agility training solved many of behavior problems associated with the breed. This breed, due to the terrier faction, needs this type of outlet to become more docile and compliant. She is by far the most comical dog we have ever had. There are times when she shows her stubborn streak but we consider that trait endearing.

Going through the door first is not just a Cesar Millan thing, it is all part of the Alpha/Beta/Pack thing. We learned this many years ago. Our first Shepard, before we started rescuing Shepards, was from the Monks of New Skete. They have many books available, audio too. The books are very helpful. It is all about respect, position and your breed. The most important training is human training, then it all falls into place. Every male Shepard needs a female Boston and every human needs a Boston, in our eyes. All this being said, Boston's have selective hearing, outstanding manipulation skills and are very smart. We can't imagine having one breed without the other.

Is water wet?! 🤯🤭😄😄😄 Jackson is guilty of the last 2 out of the 3 you mentioned. When he was young, we scolded him for something and his feelings got instantly hurt. He immediately went to the corner and hung his head in shame! It was equal parts hilarious, strange, and sad. (We soon realized that he could be somewhat sensitive to harsh verbal correction. (Around the same time, I yelled at him to stop barking at an outside dog lest he wake my napping husband. He didn't bark again for a whole week!) We loved his feisty personality and didn't want to see his 'spirit ' broken. Over time (and 3 obedience classes) we've come to an understanding regarding what is truly unacceptable behavior, but generally I guess we'll take the blame for indulging that stubbornness. 😉

Thanks for sharing Donnie. We're on our second and third BTs. As we all are aware, dogs are pack animals and as such, they are very hierarchical in nature. As the pack leaders, it is imperative that we assert our dominance as the ranking members. We go first, always. They must sit for everything: their food, treats, or even to chase and fetch a toy. If they pull on walks, we immediately correct, even if we have to stop until everyone calms down. Some of our first walks were less than 100 yards. Our youngest is 11-months old and she will lay down on walks that have gone too far. Since these are not endurance animals, a short rest often does the trick. Our oldest, at 15-months will sometimes just stare at us when being called. We firm-up our voice and shorten the gap. Of course, when she does approach us, we praise her. Both can: sit; stay; lay-down; rollover; high-five; shake; and, go to their kennel on command. Comparatively, our 11-year old Chihuahua received the same training all of his life and can: sit and stay. On command to do anything else, he sits (not the sharpest ball-in-the-box, but loved none-the-less, as he has been a great nanny to our BT girls). Consistency is the key. It is simply unfair to be inconsistent, as it causes confusion. BTs are eager to please. It is a good idea to get the smallest treats you can find (or make your own) and use them to train. Food is a great motivator and the small treats do not disrupt their appetite and mealtimes, keeps the caloric intake down, and most importantly, does not slow the training by stopping and extensively chewing. Out of 14 dogs over my lifetime, the only breed I have gotten more than once is BTs and I will never be without two moving forward. They are the best on so many levels: personality; intelligence, grooming; maintenance; and eco-footprint. I do suggest careful selection. Our first BT was from a backyard breeder. While a complete sweetheart, he had all the BT issues you read about BTs having, as well as being extra-large at 30 lbs. Our two newest (12 & 15 lbs) were from the same professional, caring breeder where the dogs all lived in her house and had a lineage of multiple champions. We drove both times to Wisconsin from Colorado to get them. I have been converted in my thinking and now believe that you get what you pay for. Thanks again Donnie.

Chandler will stop dead during a walk and put her two feet out to anchor herself to the sidewalk. I calmly ask her which direction she wants to go, and attempt to turn in several directions. Usually she decides to continue to walk in the same direction anyway. This level of stubbornness is basically harmless and I like to show her respect here - after all, it is HER walk. Fortunately where it counts, she knows to give up -especially with the command "stay". That is a life saver so I give her leeway in other ways.

If it is only when you get home my guess is because your Boston is excited to see you. This is an idea you may have tried already. 1) try having your Boston sit before you pet it when you arrive home. Or 2) take your dog outside for a walk as soon as you get home.

Then he squirms so hard or thrashing his head back and forth you cant hold him. Somebody help, ive had him 3 weeks, and hes my third Boston. Never encountered this behavior before.

Hes actually mean if i try to hold him, his biting has ripped open my arm. And makes every tiny bite bleed. Hes so cute, and i love him but hes so bad, no one can hold him. Any suggestions, a muzzle?

I have had two boxers a Chihuahua and a Shih Tzu over the years. The Boston terrier is by far the most stubborn dog I have ever met. I have a six-month-old Boston puppy and I regret getting her. I love dogs but she is a true pain in the ass. She’s definitely a smart dog, but she is not obedient and it’s a frustrating process. If you’re thinking of getting a Boston terrier, you might want to think of a different breed. Just saying.🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🗣

Oh no 🤦‍♂️ well it sounds like she is really stubborn. Hopefully things get better with age and you two grow to love one another.

Boston terriers are especially disobedient, they force you to the walking route they want .. many times you have to drag them until they give up on their plan
