Stinger works decent with a sowing needle to thread the line through the back as well with the nostril jig, just takes longer to set up, nice too because pikes don't usually short strike me so you can still use a wire leader still but floro line on the stringer, seems to keep the action decent and keeps em alive

I’m glad I stayed for the bonus. I was hooking the tail sideways with little success. WhIch method do you use more often?
@calebwistad
@calebwistad 11 месяцев назад
Nice! I would say I use the head-hook the most when jigging and the back-hook when slip bobber fishing.

I fish for bucket mouths most of the time and my proffered live bait are 3 to 4" bluegills. I rig them just behind the head through the skin, I never pierce the spine, I use 2/0 bass hooks. I attach a 2 to 3" float, add no weight, set near weedline. I let the gill swim 8" to 1 foot below, catches them everytime.
@calebwistad
@calebwistad Год назад
Oh yeah, that’s a big bass killer.
@walleyperch
@walleyperch Месяц назад
I go through the mouth out the gill twist and hook lightly again through the back by the dorsal fin… I don’t hurt the minnow very much doing that and it stays on in pretty good. I also use a stinger hook and let it just hang.
@calebwistad
@calebwistad Месяц назад
Sounds like that would work well!

@calebwistad
@calebwistad 2 года назад
Yeah. I understand that. I wouldn’t recommend it if it wasn’t going to last. I’ve had mine for going on 8 years now and it’s bounced across miles of ice all winter as well as been in my boat all summer and has held up through all of that abuse. I’m not sponsored by them or anything. I just have been very impressed with the durability of it. It’s definitely an investment though!

Great video!! Which method do you suggest for jigging walleyes during the spring river run? I fish the Wolf, Wisconsin and Rock Rivers here in Wisconsin.
@calebwistad
@calebwistad Год назад
Thanks! In the spring there is usually a bit more current and dirtier water. You can get away with a little less action on the minnow in those conditions. I’d use the behind the head method to keep my minnow on a bit longer but still have some good tail kick. If it’s super snaggy I might go all the way through the back.

I have been hooking minnows in the back the way he says is wrong. When the fish ate feeding aggressively I have balled them up on the hook and gotten bites. When they are finicky, you need to paint black dots on the minnows forehead.
@calebwistad
@calebwistad 7 месяцев назад
What is this black dot theory? ⚫️
@HughButler-lb6zs
@HughButler-lb6zs 7 месяцев назад
@calebwistad I was being facetious. I fish for crappie, and when they are not biting, nothing works.

What about using frozen minnows?
@calebwistad
@calebwistad Год назад
Frozen minnows will work if you hook them good. They are definitely mushier than fresh. Definitely not the best choice but they do the job.
@larrythompson5617
@larrythompson5617 Год назад
@@calebwistad I hear ya but several areas do not allow live minnows and by 2027 they will not be allowed in some Canadaian provinces due to hitchhiking evasive species larvae in the water.

@garymagliocca2913

Have you ever used a minnow rig? Wire runs from inside minnows mouth, loop end comes out the anus, horseshoe type hook goes through the loop. Used these for trout fishing years ago
@calebwistad
@calebwistad 7 месяцев назад
Can’t say I have. Does it kill the minnow?
@garymagliocca2913
@garymagliocca2913 7 месяцев назад
Yes it kills them. I usually ran them in the current with a small split shot. They literally will not come off without being ripped off. Google minnow rig, it may come up.
@garymagliocca2913
@garymagliocca2913 7 месяцев назад
Imagine taking a long needle and threading you minnow from inside the mouth and out the anus and putting a hook on the end. Same principle.
@walleyehunter1541
@walleyehunter1541 11 дней назад
I get using live bait, but these ways kill them so fast, with the exception of going through the tail. So it is better to simply buy dead bait
@calebwistad
@calebwistad 11 дней назад
That would be a concern if this was a live bait rig, but with a jig you are imparting most of the action with your rod so the bait’s liveliness is less important. Fresh dead is always better than frozen when it comes to bait as well.

@calebwistad
@calebwistad 9 месяцев назад
I debated that when I filmed it. I try to keep it real though and it just made more sense to use real minnows when talking about using real minnows. I don’t think it’s any different than putting them on a hook and letting a fish eat them……
