*Yea, I know. Wuddup with the Saturday upload?! 🤨It's been a pretty busy week, man. I have a lot of music to learn for a couple upcoming things so the prep has been eating up a lot of my time this week, but I still wanted to get something out for y'all. So check out this hopefully helpful lesson on how you can improve the strength, feel, effectiveness and confidence of your groove. Don't forget to share it if you dig it!* ✌🏽😎#GrooveResponsibly

A couple of things: 1. Your technique is immaculate 2. Your sticks obviously are getting a lot of love 3. Beauty in the groove is truly in the subtleties 4. Playing drums is like martial arts. Relax and flow 5. Traditional grip is awesome 6. That is the coolest Van Halen shirt I have ever seen; and I am not a big VH fan (although Alex is an amazing drummer) 7. I don’t have a pulse, but I am not dead; I am merely a meat popsicle (refer to 5th element) That is all. Keep on continuing to groove responsibly y’all. 👍

Saw this 3 years too late! I totally agree about the hi hat technique for pulse, ghost notes are not lazy drags, stay loose, and I call it “enable your foot”. These tips have done wonders for my playing.

Dynamics and feel are HUGE in your overall groove. You've also got to play relaxed/loose, or it sounds to mechanical. Great video!!

Dang, man...that RB signature snare is juicy! I started watching this and I’m all, “This one is probably not for me, I’ve been doin’ this for 30yrs...” then, BAM! Knowledge. Ok, so, love the VH T-and, so, I’m going to renew my request for some Alex VH breakdown on Beautiful Girls-that groove is tricky, sounds easy, but it ain’t to me. HELP!

Your are so beloved Rob! I love your instruction videos man! I am a composer and multi instrumentalist and have spent 2 months trying to get an acceptable drum sound in my studio (for my improvised Dark Star recordings) and I think I am going crazy. The Bass drum has to be the hardest drum to get right. I have examples on my YT channel under Dark Star (there are 16 of them so far.) I am about to put your bass drum tuning (low) into action. When the drums don't sound right , they really sound like a mess. Thank you Rob for all the great work you do brother! Cheers from NY. :)
@vihro

Like always - great lesson, Rob :) The only thing I'd like to mention is that everytime you hit the bass drum there is really tiny overtone from the splash hitting the plastic isolation underneath it - for example the groove around 9:30 min.

These are some the biggest differences drummers can bring to the table to kick it up a notch. I play mostly acoustic, but when I fill in at my church, I am on an electronic kit. One of my biggest complaints is that there are only so many triggers on electric kits and I'm stuck with only 8-9 sound and limited dynamics. With acoustic, each instrument can produce many sounds as Mr. Brown demonstrates.
