Rob Brown What if you’re a cross dominant drummer still wanting to improve your hands overall? Meaning you don’t have a weak hand so to speak. I’m left hand dominant on a right hand setup and right hand dominant on a left handed setup.

Hi Rob, I from England, a 72 year old, self taught, ex semi professional drummer. I always had a great feel for the rhythm and groove but never really learned how to play correctly. Just lately I've been viewing some of your videos and I must say you have opened up a host of possible ways for me to improve dramatically, whereas before, to me, there was no hope of getting my singles and doubles right, let alone a proper, fast paradiddle which was out for the question. I am now working on these things and showing some immediate improvement. I shall continue to do so. You have inspired me Rob and thank you so much for providing these insights to drumming completely free of charge. I've met too many drummers over the years who want to keep these things a black art just to show off and be better than you. I thank you for your generosity in that regard.

So i have two week hands but one is left is weaker. Right hand has been fractured and two surgeries later I’m missing three bones and he had to grind some on the arm bone. I had an accident and cut my flexer and ulnar tendon and nerve on my left hand. Three surgeries and cutting my thumb tendon with a hatchet camping, my left hand is more comprised. I’ve been playing for many years and I’m finally learning how to play with the correct form. Thank you Mr B!!!!! You’ve helped me more than you can imagine! Yeah , also use your weak hand, in my case the left hand, to drink your coffee, open jars, etc., etc., The more you do, the more it enforces neural plasticity. Weird but true. I see a neural psychologist for chronic pain and anxiety syndrome who uses hypnotherapy. Neural Plasticity is part of the process. I do intend to try Rob's practices he shows in the Vid. Happy Drumming.

About 2 weeks ago I watched a vid from another drummer (Richard welsby, he does cool stuff and makes some good drum vids) who was doing a drum cover of "rock n roll" by zepplin. In that song Bonham is playing 8ths with both the right n left hands . this is very important to the feel of the song. Now I'm 58 and have struggled with my left hand cordination from the start. And after all to get both hands evenly as strong and as tight as each other is like trying to write your name with a pen as evenly and clearly. Very tough to do for me. So when I went to play the zep song I realised just how bad lefty was. I couldn't keep up with the time. So I've been really digging in and working to get lefty up to scratch with the right. It changes everything. Before I'd often had muscle tightness and slight pain in my left trapeseus from overcompensating on my left side. I'm more aware of how I feel playing . so that's better. My dynamics are better. And I've always tried to let how relaxed and how proper the mechanics on the right teach the left. I don't know if it'll ever reach being as good and natural as the right hand but it's better and I can do the 8ths in time with the speed of the song now. I just know this has always been an issue for me highlited by the rock n roll video and Rob in perfect time did this vid while I've been working on just this issue. Thanks Rob and your esp. To me mechanics are vital and watching cats play with proper mechanics speaks to me so much more then other aspects of learning the instrument.to play with maximum sound and dynamics with using the least effort is how I try to play. You may see guys playing where their sticks and hands are way over their heads and all this huge movements but you don't need to do that for power . I see it like a pro dancer. You need to work up to those things and guys like Thomas pridgein can do it easy but that's Thomas pridgein. So this is an issue close to me and I wanted to tell my story even at 58 so y'all know it's a long tough issue for some but an important one that can lead to overcoming the yips and troubles of your weak hand. Thanks Rob you rock and are 1 of my fave teachers on you tube "and I always try to mention u and for other drummers to check out your channel. Cheers all thanks

Hey Rob - digging your channel champ! You are making my second run a music sooooo much fun! At 60 - you learn things sooo much faster than when you are a teenager. I have been doing strength and conditioning for Athlete’s for over 40 years! I’m applying many of the strength training principles I use with my athletes to drumming and they work - from progressive over load to contrast training - they work. Also - the principles we use to teach fast-feet and movement patterns - they work too. Maybe at 65 or 70 I will have a system to teach old new drummers to learn and get better faster! Bigger, faster, stronger has become faster, funkier, smoother! LOL Keep it coming kid - now I’m buying a shirt!!

After years of the struggle, I figured out why my left hand couldn’t keep up I spent all my time riding with the right hand while the left played backbeats. I started playing open hand, playing ride patterns on the hi hat with left hand and on the ride with the right. I started teaching all my students like that and it works really well. Your dominant hand still pulls ahead naturally, so some of these exercises are good to bridge the gap. There is a book called the Weaker Side that addresses it with specific exercises.

Thanks Rob! I really appreciate these fundamental videos. I just grabbed a new kit for the first time in 12 years because of kids and time! I’m wanting to start off better. Appreciate your help!

Rob you are great! I'm a begginner drummer (a bass player who dreamed 16 years about playing drums), this is the most usefull video I've watched lately. My left hand is terrible, and now I have something to practice with. Thanks a lot dude!
