A small correction, if I may: You say "the verb 'to be' does not exist in Arabic". That's not accurate. It does not exist in the "Present Simple" Tense , but it does exist in the Past Tense (كَانَ means "he was" in the Past Tense = ماض), and in the Present/Future Tense (مضارع) (يَكُون - can be translated as: He is being) or (سَيَكُون - he will be). It is true that you don't use "to be" as in English (am, is, are in Present Simple). هو اخي = He is my brother (no verb in this sentence). This is very similar to Hebrew, where in "to be" sentences, you don't use the "to be" verb :-) [Funny, but true]. So, the Arabic parallel to "هو اخي" is "הוא אחי" in Hebrew.

Sh*t ....!! I'm Tunisian and when i negate something ; my brain select randomly between the negation partical "not"; (Laysa, ghayr, la, lam, lan...etc) and it's always correct ! Now i noticed how difficult is negation in Arabic for learners ! I didn't studied that before because it's considered evident !!! Honestly when you put yourself in learner's position you realize that your native language is not that easy !!!!

Somali has very similar approach Let me state: X = ح C = ع - Maya - NO (seen Arabs use it as a female name) - Maha (surprise surprise your name, actually means NOT in Somali) - Ma (not). Indeed the same as Arabic. Don't forget both Arabic and Somali also use Ma to ask questions. For example, Ma Arabad tahay? (Are you an Arab?) Ma baxayo (I'm NOT leaving/going). ما بحيو Ma cabtay? (Did you drink?) ما عبتي؟ Ma cubaayo (I will NOT drink) ما عبيو Uma - won't, the Ma is still present as suffix This reminds me of the Arabic word for mother (umm). Somali uses different word; hooyo and actually hooy means home, my home = my mum But the word for birth is related to umm... it's ummul Ummuuliso (midwife) Ummad - nation This has its roots in the Afroasiatic and is not loan words. Maa is very foundations of Somali. I hope that helps some of the linguists out there who are curious. I understand both languages but I don't know the right terms adjectives, verbs, nouns, etc. But I know the structural relations between the two. Keep up the good work Maha. You are great teacher.

In Soomaali Like you said, both interrogative and negation it is "Ma = مَ" but in Arabic it's "Maa = مَا" (in Arabic "maa" functiones interrogative, negation and as relative pronoun) (she isn't using the case or the mode in the examples she gives, she's only using only the nominative case or indicative mode / mood like the Arabic dialectics), Soomaali it's a short vowel of "a" whereas in Arabic it's a long "aa / ā". "Ma cabi hayo" shortened (the pre-auxiliary infinitive Cabi (proper infinitive is Cabid of the imperative verb Cab = drink! Imperative is bases of the Soomaali verb whereas in Arabic it's the third person masculine of past tense) and auxiliary Hay + negation vowel "-o" or "-i" for the the first person but it's the second person it's "-id") Ma Cabayo, as the auxiliary verb "Hay" funciones as the continuous form of the Soomaali verb. Uma (= u "postposition" + ma) = ma u. In Soomaali we don't have prepositions but postpositions that are part of the verbal box and within the verbal box they're postposition that's post noun but still within the verbal box (beginning with focus particles: Waxa / Waxaa, Baa / Ayaa, Waa, ending the Verb itself) they're within pre-verbal, For example (Soomaali verbal sentence: topic-comment phrase, Inankaygii baa / ayaa Hawdka u guuray Or Waxa / Waxaa Hawdka u guuray Inankaygii or Waxa / waxaa uu (clitic pronoun "uu = 3rd person masculine can diffuse with the focus particle = waxuu or wuxuu) Hawdka ugu (u + ku) guuray shalay My Son moved for Hawd / My son moved to Hawd, the other He moved to / for Hawd yesterday So, in English prepositions For and To of Hawd are pre-nominal whereas in Soomaali the postposition "u" and "ugu" are post-nominal to Hawd. "Ma aho" generally the -o is pronounced as -a, so, "ma aho" becomes "ma aha" and sometimes as one "maaho or maaha", and it's Umuliso (= the midwife, the feminine acive participle of the causative verb "umuli = assisting someone giving birth), not mm or uu! Ummad (it's Arabic Ummat or simply Umma أُمَّةٌ, where in Soomaali -t turns into -d)!

Tks for the lesson, could you please tell me if it is possible to use MISH FOR ADJECTIVES in the shami dialect as well Manu for the verb TO BE? Tks so much! !!
@maherabdelhamid4461
@maherabdelhamid4461 4 года назад
Yes. that's right for Mish but Manu is used only for He (Houwa). For She (Hiya), Manu becomes Mahi, for They (Hom), Manu becomes Mahom.
