Hi Scott, thank you for this very good explanation of talk back and its using. You pointed something that I'm thinking since a while and I do not have any solution. I'm a dummer and I also perform some choirs. I'm thinking on a mean to cut my mike thanks to Stage Traxx 3 and midi, to avoid the drum feedback as maximum as possible. With my band, I'm the only one who is using IEM and I have my own mixer (analog one). If you know something magic... :) See you

Using a supercardioid as a talkback can also help with reducing bleed. Our drummer runs our talkback and we use a Shure Beta 56A mic to reduce bleed.

Nice video as usual Scott. We use a separated TB mic for our beerfest gigs for the drummer and bass player. I use a little pedal board which has a spark mini booster, an EQ mini pedal for cutting the bass freqs and an ABY minipedal switcher. The mic is connected to that board and the ouput goes directly to a wired in ear Behringer P2 for the drummer. The other output of the ABY is empty making it work as an onn off switch, it works very good! After watching your video I will try the midi setup next time! I have to get a second widi and a midi baby 3. Awesome pedal, About the midi power. I guess midi always use at least 3v of power that is why those pedals need power supply. 😊 For your rack midi ports of the X32 you can use some mini male to female midi extenders. I really enjoy your tutorials! Thanks for your videos muchacho ! They are always very informative and direct to the point! Congrats!
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic 3 месяца назад
Oh nice! Yeah the midi is great, but if something else works well, then that’s what’s important. I’ve wanted to try those adapters to see if they work. I tried one and it didn’t send the power needed to power the WIDI was the only thing
@dougonutube
@dougonutube Год назад
Really useful real-world insights, as usual. One thought, if you don't have the luxury of a dedicated mixer channel for the talkback mic (eg X-air series mixers etc) you could maybe use the Midi method to cut the main vocal mic from LR bus, so you can then talk directly to your band (who all have at least some lead vocal in their in-ear mixes!) - you won't get the different EQ that you mention, but at least you don't need a dedicated channel.
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic Год назад
Thanks! But If you don’t have a mixer, how would you be able to send the midi?

I rigged up a clever solution for this the other day. I’m using Reaper to run a click, backing tracks, and live synths. So I set up a channel in Reaper with a simple synth program that reads a simple MIDI note. The MIDI item is set up to play during each song, but not in between. Then I’m using a Omni reference mic on channel 16. And I use the MIDI synth via USB into channel 15. And I use the synth sound as a side chain on the Omni mic to activate a gate. So as long as that synth is playing a note the room mic is muted. The straight MIDI to the X32 option to mute/unmute the mics is an interesting idea to try out.

Scott - How about the Midi Captain One (as a single button, midi switch). Doesn't use batteries though... still needs power. Takes a barrel jack for this one. They also have a Duo model... but still the same power issue. I've seen some "build your own circuits" for single midi buttons... then you can build them to use batteries... but it's definitely a DIY approach.

I have easy access to MixingStation on stage so I can push the Talk button that turns bright red, letting me know it isn't going to FOH.😊 I use a trick similar trick to use one channel for click (USB input for us) and talkback (old wireless mic). It toggles between USB and analog in.

Hi Scott, thank you so much for this video. At my church I sing lead while leading the worship team, and I coordinate with the musicians for the flow of the set. They are sometimes I wish I could give cues to the musicians only while leading and this has helped to start in the right direction. Only thing is, I’m not usually stationary on stage, so the toggle peddle seems great, but don’t know how I would manage. Just yesterday, before this video, I was thinking of attaching a wireless lapel mic to my shirt as a talkback and sing with the wireless handheld for the house. Would that be a good option or would the sound be too muddy for the musicians?
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic Год назад
That could work too… It will just always be going to their ears and might not be very clear. It’s worth a try, but I am 50/50 if that would work. The Axient Digital has a mic switch that allows you to push a button on the mic to switch the output to a second output, but that’s seriously like a $10k system. I wish someone else would figure out a way to do that for much cheaper. There would be a market for it

Lol yeah! I had a friend of mine who switched to a headset mic… and one of his first shows he leaned over (assuming it was away from the mic from years of using a handheld on a mic stand) and said “check out the rack on the mom that just walked in” and said it completely loud into the headset mic lol.

Is there any reason method 4 couldn't work with all 4 vocal mics on stage with an x32? For a group talkback, any of us could chime in. Since we have a ton of virtual channels open, we could mute the 4 live channels going to and engage the 4 linked monitor only channels. Right?

Yup, you could do that 👍

Do you think it would be possible to use a line 6 Helix pedal to send the midi command to an X32 to toggle the mute of the talkback / vocal?
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic Год назад
Yup definitely 👍 I have this video about sending midi: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EJ_bCKH8rmk.html

@@ScottUhlMusic thanks Scott! I watched about 10 of your videos last night, super high quality, great explanations! Thanks for all the great content!

Do you know if the Helix can send multiple cc commands on a single foot switch press? I’d love a single foot switch toggle mute for both main vocal channel and talk back channel. ❤

Yup it can 👍

I think you missed a very effective method: you post a killswitch after the splitter to interrupt the front-of-house signal. This way you only hear the signal on the IEM's while holding the switch. I love your channel
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic Год назад
Oh nice! Yeah that would make sense if you are using a splitter specifically. Good idea 🤘

Please help, how can i do that...my singer has one mic, and i want to give him guitar footswitch..and when he steps on it, band hears him in iem..when he steps off..he unmute his mic...we have behringer x32...please help
@simonsanchez3867
@simonsanchez3867 Год назад
@@rokuponoc you need a device which you install after the splitter in the front-of-house signal path of your singer. This device must have the ability to interrupt the signal via footswitch. This is pure theory, I have no idea if such a device even exists. Maybe you have to invent this thing yourself. If you have some knowledge of electronics and soldering, this should not be a problem.

Good info, Scott. Do you have any suggestions/options for bi-directional wireless comms with the sound person? My sound person mixes wirelessly via a tablet, and doesn't want to carry a large wireless mic like Phenyx units you've reviewed. Also, I'd like to be able to communicate with her via the on-stage talk-back mic. For instance: Sound person: "This guy next to me wants to hear 'Freebird'." Me: "How badly does he want to hear it?" Sound person: "$200 badly." Me: "Tell him it's coming up next!"

Hahahahah the ONLY time to play free bird :) and I don’t have much knowledge over the comm mic stuff at all, so I’m not sure. But most of them have a mute switch on the transmitter, so I would imagine almost all of them should work?

You can run the talkback mic into whichever input on your mixer, just as long as the musicians can hear it and not the crowd 👍

I use that to control stage Traxx and it works great! I haven’t used it with mixing station though. I haven’t used midi with mixing station actually so I’m not sure

@@ScottUhlMusic Thank you for your quick response! Great to know it worked well for you. I’m usually doing sound and playing at the same time and was thinking if it were possible to use one foot switch as a tap tempo for delay time, and possibly another switch as a talk back switcher?

that proximity sensor is a good idea but the implementation is a scam and a half. 250 bucks for basically a component that every smartphone has and is dirt cheap??? thieves
