This video, and the hoards of follow-ups that will inevitably… follow… specifically concerns American English words that either didn’t enter the collective British consciousness or that simply evaded my own. Here are five words I didn’t know existed before moving to America.

I'm from Northern Illinois, and I see both addictive and addicting, but the connotations of each word are different. Addictive has a negative connotation, as it is more often used to describe a substance that causes a physical dependency, especially in the context of harm to a person. For example: referring to alcohol as addictive, and describing symptoms of alcoholism. Meanwhile the connotation of addicting is usually more neutral-positive. For example: "Oh my gosh, I just tried these pretzels, and they're crazy good, and so addicting!"

@eileensweeney2500
@eileensweeney2500 4 года назад
Wasn't it primarily New England primarily? I think that would make sense. This is a region where not many outsiders, including outsiders from other parts of the US, ever really explore. It is unfortunate, but the reality is that New England, for a lot of Americans, has very little to offer that other parts of America don't offer, but with much increased friendliness and hospitality and much decreased expense. Thus, the fact that many people Americans have not heard this term is hardly surprising, because New England's relative isolation makes it rather weird...

I really love that someone else has done the research and also learned that many of the "silly American slang versions of words" are actually the older English form of a word than the British dialect currently uses on account of that whole period I think in the last century when some social class in England went through and revamped the entire British dialect to sound smarter and ended up making newer and Frenchier sounding versions of old words.

"Addicting" Kids use this one as an adjective but as they get older they're taught to use it exclusively as a verb. "Leef-peeping" absolutely never heard of it. The whole activity sounds weird to me. "Specialty" We use this one in Australia but also use speciality. "Video games are my specialty" is how you'd use that while, "My speciality is an orthopedic surgeon." is how you'd use it.

Actually wait.. Just found this: "Addicting" IS actually a word, but since it is not an adjective, it is often used incorrectly. As used correctly, it is a verb, meaning "tending to or causing to become addicted." For example, "By drinking too much coffee, I run the risk of addicting myself to caffeine." So addictive is the adjective and addicting is the verb with present participle?

There are two types of fruit called "currants." The first is in the Ribes family and includes blackcurrants, red currants, and white currants. These are closely related to gooseberries. The other is a type of small grape that's often dried into raisins. The Sun-Maid company sells them as "Zante currants." They're not closely related to the Ribes type of currant at all, and the flavors of the two species are very different. Most commercial spotted dicks are made with the raisin type of currant, or from sultanas. You can find recipes for spotted dick using blackcurrants, but people usually use raisins of some type. Historically the word "currant" was originally applied to small raisins. It's related to "Corinth," which is where this type of grape originated. The word was later applied to blackcurrants because of their physical resemblance to these grapes.

a random click on youtube. wow i love this idea of breaking down specific word deviations. i had definitely never realized a difference in my idea of speciality vs specialty. and just as an initial reaction hearing specialty, i think of the outcome of someones ability to do something well. while speciality is more an act of someone or more so an end product of someones ability. which, typing out, made it sound a whole lot more similar than it sounded in my head.
