This was the worst video I've ever seen. Only 1 vehicle on the list was an actual truck, the Chevy LUV, and none of these were built to compete with traditional full size trucks. The Chevy SSR was underpowered? 400 HP is underpowered? The GMC Caberello was underpowered? Well so was every other car in the 80's, the Camaro Z28 in 1987 only had 215 hp, the Corvette only had 240hp, so a Caberello with 170 wasn't bad. But with the exception of the LUV none of these were built to be like a traditional truck, none had a body on frame construction. This video is horrible and I hope they never make another so full of nonsense.

Right off the intro, The Pinto pickup FIRSTLY was NEVER a production vehicle, the one shown is a 79 or 80 not a 70 and it is based on the pinto WAGON which did NOT have the exploding fuel tank issue. I wish you videographers would learn about cars before making this garbage.
@g-mang-man7924

Absolutely. Only the 71-73 coupes needed the impact plate between the tank and rear axle. Any WAGON chassis, had the tank filler on the side. They didn't have the tendency for fire. Please use a real human voice. AI generated voice is just lazy

@@imrytebeehyneu You are saying the presenter is an anti-car guy? I even still hear bad comments about the Mustang II, it was stifled from being a Mustang by the government, but the Pinto/Mustang platform was one of the best handling chassis to come out of 1974. Even if the Pinto had a crucial safety fault, first it's not a pickup, second at least know which car had the fault. The fact is he compiles some cars, edits them into a video, says some words and as crappy as it is, we are here giving him ratings with our comments all be them negative.

The pinto "pickup" was a custom conversion. Not a production car. The luv, well, you were actually right on that one... The rampage and Caballero (pronounced ca-ba yer-o) were great vehicles, not meant to be actual trucks. Now on to the SSR, not the SR, it wasn't supposed to be practical. It was a show piece. Better luck next time picking out PICK UP TRUCKS, instead of utility vehicles. There were FAR worse pickup trucks that should have replaced all, except the luv, the vehicles in this video. Ford Motor Company NEVER built a Ford Pinto Pick-up! The little bastardized Pinto that you have in your video was built by a totally non-affiliated automotive company. Perhaps a little due diligence and some active research would have helped. The use of A.I. voice reading absolutely makes this video incredibly difficult to watch and the fact that you would use a Ford that didn't ever exist in the mainstream automotive market as your only GOMOCO listing .and only one Chrysler product, and the fact that all of the rest of the vehicles are G.M.C. products, makes this video look like a brand hit on Chevy.... not a great look for your channel.

Do you even read about any of these vehicles? The pinto wagon the truck was based on never had the fuel tank issues. And Pintos sold like hotcakes the whole time Ford built them! You don’t build a car that doesn’t sell for a decade! Speaking of decades, the Toyota truck didn’t really come on strong until the 80s. The LUV and Ford Courier (Mazda) were far more common than Japanese trucks. It was the late 70s before Japanese car lots became common everywhere. They had been mostly a west coast thing and European cars were more common in the rest of the country. Finally, I know you must think folks was ignorant back then, but we weren’t. There is only one truck on this list. The rest are coupe utilities. Nobody cross shopped trucks and coupe utilities! Nobody walked onto a Dodge lot and said “do I want a D150, a D50(Mitsubishi), or a Rampage. Also, nobody built a coupe utility expecting high sales figures. They were a way to add another body to an existing platform and squeeze a few extra sales out of it. Maybe you should consider researching more, or talking to someone who actually was alive during that time!😂

I don't think that this is AI narrated! I hear and detect some nasal in the voice, so i am near to it is actual human. Although this narrator does not seem to know how to how pronounce, and/or perhaps having trouble reading from a script. The person who created this video appears to not be knowledgeable at automotive history. As sone have mentioned vehicles like the El Camino and other Ute style vehicles were not intended to replace a traditional pickup truck, nor were they marketed as such. They were more of a precursor of the present day crossovers, although their design was more towards sport and their cargo space was open, as opposed to being enclosed as the crossovers. Also at the time most of those vehicles were produced fuel efficiency was more of a factor, and such vehicles offered an alternative for people who did not need the features and performance of a full size pickup. That's my two cents worth of my personal opinion. I endured and made it through the entire video! 😆 I really interested in part 2. Sorry 😔

My Dad bought a Chevy LUVin 1977. It got great mileage, but lacked power. his truck had the 2.0 liter engine. I think this engine would have run stronger, oe had more percieved power if it had had a lower rear gear set. The LUV came with a 4.11 axle ratio. This allowed it to get heavy loads moving, but the engine ran out of power at speeds above 45-50 MPH.

Literally done to compete with Ford's Ranger, which was a Mazda import -Dodge Rampage = An El Camino-ized Dodge Omni/Charger, which there was a market for until mini-vans were created -GMC Cabellero = An El Camino with GMC badges and power windows, and it had the same issues as the El Camino -Chevrolet Esser = Chevrolet SSR. On the Caballero, I don't understand all these negative reviews regarding its engine strength and performance. Negative styling remarks, I can understand as up to the B pillar it is a Chevrolet Impala. The 78-85 Impala, a workhorse in law enforcement city state and federal levels, if the Caballeros having the same power train options, if not more performance, which is the hallmark of the GMC badging, what could then be the cause of its reportedly lo performance in comparison even to a gmc 1500 pickup truck, them both having the exact same powertrain? an 85 s10 pick up? a caballero was faster than the 4 cylinder datsuns, toyotas and nissan hardbodys of the era. And ssyling? the El Caminos and Caballeros had it hands ov er the plain jane "stylings" of the same trio of the period.

Actually the Dodge Rampage was QUICKER than Ranger and S-10 and even fullsize and mid size trucks! It blew them away....it wasnt made to compete against those trucks as Dodge had the D-50 that was the same as a Courier/Ranger and Luv/S-10... It was NOT made to compete with Ranger that never existed when the Rampage came out that was Ford Mazda built Courier...Dodge had the D-50 compact truck to compete against the Ford Courier and Chevrolet Luv then later the S-10... It was just a car based truck not made for towing but for a homeowner or small business that needed a vehicle with more cargo room.. They ran 8 second 0-60 thats quicker than compact trucks of the era that ran 15 seconds and slower!! It was a rocket during those years..

Did Ford make a pinto truck? I'm not so sure about that. The L.U.V. truck was a fine little truck. None of these little trucks were meant to replace a full-sized truck. They were cheap little haulers and nothing more. So I'm not so sure they were the worst pickup trucks. Besides the young person talking in this video doesn't even sound old enough to be around when these little trucks were on the road, so how would he even know? Just saying.

The GMC Caballero was the generic version of the Chevy El Camino. I rarely saw the GMC twin, but this generation of El Camino was everywhere! Chevy must have done something right. As for the Pinto pickup, that was never a factory model. I don't know what business did the conversions. And the Chevy LUV was also everywhere. Chevy and Isuzu did something right.

What about the Ford Ranchero? You listed the GMC Caballero/El Camino but not Fords version.

They really need how to pronounce the names of the cars/trucks they are featuring. It’s caba yard, not caba Laro! These are are either narrated by AI, or idiots!

Dear Drive TV, hire announcers that know SOMETHING, anything at all about cars built in the last 50 years. while I do take your list with the pound of salt it was wrote with, A V-8, is pronounced "v- eight" NOT "vate". The Chevrolet LUV(pronounced "LOVE") was hated because of RUST. I've never seen a Pinto ute and the only one you got right was the dodge do to lack of ability to haul weight. Heck come get me I'll help you make one of these cheap, having owned and driven many of the cars you try to make videos about.

What is the point of this. Only the LUV was actually a pickup. The rest were basically cars with a bed. I had an El Camino that did some truck duty after I put overload springs on it. They were just Chevelles.
