I always love seeing Game Boy get some love. I'm glad that the old stigma of handheld games being "lesser" is finally lifting. For anyone interested, both Balloon Kid and Myths & Monsters are available digitally on 3DS, which is sadly going to be shut down in March, and Belmont's Revenge is on the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, which is available on every modern platform. As for me, I've always adored the Game Boy Megaman games. As a matter of fact, the first one, Dr. Wily's Revenge is the very first game I ever played!

Excellent Series in general. The Gargoyle's Quest series, that is, Gargoyle's Quest on Game Boy, Gargoyle's Quest II on NES (and also Game Boy I think), and Demon's Crest on SNES (one of my favorite games of all time). Ghouls 'n Ghosts is cool too, but I'm definitely a much bigger fan of the Gargoyle's Quest spinoff series.

I believe there's a decent Bonk game on the Gameboy that isn't a remake of any existing Bonk game. Also, there's no NES roots but I just want to shout out Tail Gator. A game about a cute little gator wearing sneakers that goes from room to room trying to find the key to the next one while avoiding baddies to a boppin' soundtrack, with tiny graphics that smartly avoid screen crunch.

Blaster Master: Enemy Below was the first true sequel to Blaster Master. TMNT actually had a game like the first NES game on the GB. You could realistically count the Saga games (FF Legend) as spinoffs of Final Fantasy II. The crazy part about the Gameboy is that it had continuations from not only NES and SNES, but also PS1!!

The Game Boy game was my first exposure to Kid Icarus; a friend of mine got the game for his birthday, and I remember being with him at his family's cabin in the woods. It was a pretty unforgettable adventure. The ones I'd recommend most are Bionic Commando, Duck Tales, Gradius: The Interstellar Assault, Mega Man (1-5), Ninja Gaiden Shadow, TMNT 3, and Ultima: Runes of Virtue. Of these, Ninja Gaiden Shadow and TMNT 3 are particularly interesting; the former is actually a spin-off of Shadow of the Ninja on NES, and the latter is a Platventure that's pretty well-designed. Ultima's neat, too; it plays more like a top-down Action Adventure than an actual Ultima game.

Really good music on these games, Praying Hands is one of the best songs in any Castlevania game, Fortress of Fear has a pretty good David Wise composed score although you don't hear the really good tracks until a little ways into the game, Sneaky Snakes sounds great and carries over the rhythm and blues energy from the NES game, I played Balloon Kid a lot as a kid and obviously that game has some great tunes too.

@@hungrygoriya My plan is to replay most or all of the RPGs from NES, SNES, Master system, Genesis. I always loved the RPGs. I saw your video on Legacy of the Wizard and I don't remember playing it...or forgot after like 30 years lol, so I may jump into that one. Also I enjoyed your outlook on games like Phantasy Star 2 and how you disliked it. It was my favorite at the time, however I think part of it is me starting RPGs with text based games and playing games as they came out. RPGs came out slowly and unlike sports games you don't replay them over and over so it was always waiting for a game just to play and story etc didn't matter much at the time. I think the graphics of the game was amazing to me so that gave it extra stars for my rating. I did hate the extreme spawn rate especially because the mazes were complex and had so many dead ends ... and the hint book was a MUST for me. Have you played the game Grim Dawn? I loved that story, they did so well, like they actually made the game around the story instead of a second thought (PC game though)

My dad knew nothing about videogames and kind of resented them, but when I asked for a Gameboy he somehow came through with Belmont's Revenge along with it. It and Tetris were the only games I had, so I got that game down backwards and forth. I cannot tell you how many times I played through it just to hear that awesome yet melancholy credits song. On the matter of the boomerang cross, I'm guessing they left it out since the whip being able to shoot fireballs made it somewhat redundant. The big three 16-bit titles from the era draw most of the praise, but Belmont's Revenge belongs right up there with them (and maybe even ahead of Bloodlines *cough*). I was so glad they included it in the recent Castlevania Collection. I am not so glad I sold my copy years ago, because its worth hundreds of dollars in-box now (and yeah, I had kept the box too :/ ).

It's amazing that NES-style experiences were possible on the GB! Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge and Balloon Kid are even better than Castlevania II and Ballon Fight on the NES, in my opinion. Both of the GB Castlevania games you cover here are available in color for the GBC as part of Konami's GB Collection series of cartridges. And that first game has been hacked to make your character faster, in both the original version and the color one. So the hacker turned a fatally flawed game into a masterpiece. That game's music is usually seen as wasted on a mediocre game, but now it's where it belongs. I agree with your calling Snake Rattle & Roll "complicated", but there's a hack which gives it normal controls.

I remember car rides playing the with the giant magnifying glass attachment with lights for night drives home. For some reason other than Link's Awakening I never got more gameboy games. Long Comment here. The Addams Family was released for Game Boy, NES, and SNES (maybe more as well), all of which I think were the same basic setup of exploration-based platformers, but each individual version also seemed to have its own layout. I only had the Game Boy version of the game, and I remember liking it a lot, but I was probably like eight years old too, so I'm actually not sure how well it holds up today... Some Game Boy games that don't have anything to do with the NES library, but that I think are awesome games that nobody seems to talk about are Cosmo Tank and The Sword of Hope I and II. I absolutely love these games and have never understood why they seem to be so unheard of, but I highly recommend them if you are looking for more great Game Boy games to check out. Cosmo Tank is one of the most ambitious genre blending games I've seen on any platform, let alone the Game Boy. It has top-down exploration-based run n gun sections, first person dungeon crawling sections with something like gallery shooting segments, and side-scrolling shmup sections that act as transitions between different planets that you can explore. Very awesome and very underrated game in my opinion. The Sword of Hope I and II are also genre blending games of sorts, both first person dungeon crawling RPG games that are also something like text based adventure games I guess... I'm probably doing a horrible job of categorizing these, but in my defense, I think these games are also kind of hard to classify, which is part of what makes them really interesting to me. That's all for now. Hope these suggestions are helpful!

@@hungrygoriya Cool! Well, I've only actually ever played the Addams Family game for the Game Boy and I really liked that one but I was also pretty young, so can't say much for it now, or for those games in general. Just thought they could potentially be appropriate for the theme of this video. I have heard that the other versions of that game have similar qualities to the Game Boy one though, which is platforming with some light exploration elements, which is what I remember liking about the Game Boy title. I can definitely vouch for Cosmo Tank and the Sword of Hope games though and would highly recommend those. That really sucks about the price of Sword of Hope II these days. Definitely glad to already have a copy of it myself. I hope you are able to find a reasonably priced one at some point, but I suppose if nothing else, there is the option of emulation or reproduction cartridges or something. I figure you've probably heard of websites like this one called Vimm's Lair where you can play Game Boy games in your browser window, but I actually just found out about that myself. I also just checked and Sword of Hope II is available on that one, so I guess there's that as well. Cosmo Tank is mostly action, but there is exploration to be had as well. The dialogue is minimal, but I think what little bit is there is generally guidance on what you are supposed to be doing, so being able to read it would help. I guess you could just trial and error your way through it though, or maybe look up some guides if such things exist for that game. I would be happy to help too if there's anything you would like to know about any of those games, I would just need to play them again, which I've been meaning to do for a while anyway...

It's the grandfather to the "Mana" series and was later remade under the title Sword of Mana. A very story driven rpg, that uses many of the character sprites of the early final fantasy games. It's a bittersweet tale. Donkey Kong 94' - Starts out as a throwback to the original Donkey Kong However once you beat those 4 levels the game gets big.....really really big. Mario's begging to deal with bowser again after this adventure, it's one of the best platform puzzle games of it's time Gargoyles Quest - This game strikes a similar cord as kid Icarus in that it had a Nintendo release but this one seemed, better. It's more of a side scrolling platformer with a few rpg elements....think Zelda 2 adventure of link. It's a challenging game. Ultima: Runes of Virtue 2 - Another top down adventure in the Zelda Vein. The story is much more basic, Collect rune kill bad guy,, and the game isn't organized, so it's easy to get lost. Still it's filled with puzzles and can be great fun if you enjoy these games. And some others that don't need much on an explanation. Final fantasy legend Series (All 3 of them) Super Mario World 2 : 6 Golden Coins Wario Land (Super Mario Land 3) Kirby's Dream Land Series Metroid 2 : Return of Samus

Great suggestions! I've played quite a few of these already, with the ones left on my list being some of the Final Fantasy Legend Games, Ultima, Metroid 2, and Donkey Kong '94. There are tons of awesome Game Boy games!

I was really impressed with Belmont's Revenge. I wanna say the Japanese version of that game has the cross (aka the boomerang)?

Yeah, that's right! Someone mentioned that and I'd like to try that version out sometime. It's not as if there's much story to follow here anyway.

three nice ones are Mole Mania (puzzle game from nintendo Miyamoto) Donkey Kong 94 and Cave Noire (rogue like from Konami, only released in Japan but easy to play without Japanese knowledge)

Always fun checking out the classic Game Boy line! I’ve been slowly building up a collection so discovering titles I haven’t heard of is always neat 😊 If I would have any suggestions it would be a couple unique ones. Gargoyle’s Quest started its series on here. A definite challenge to get through! There are four Final Fantasy games on here. From what I understand the FF Legend series (there are three) are actually part of the SaGa RPG series. So if you want a RPG on the go and already beat Dragon Quest, go for it! FF Adventure is actually the first of the Secret of Mana series and is more of an action adventure. You can actually play it on Collection of Mana on Switch if you don’t want to break the bank lol oh and speaking of Dragon Quest, there is a unique one if you like Pokémon but want a different experience collecting monsters. Dragon Quest Monsters definitely fills that niche! As for my last title, it’s definitely a different one. I had to hunt it down as it is more unique then any of these other ones Catrap is a puzzle platformer in which you help two cursed kids take out the monsters in one hundred different rooms before they get turned into cats! It seems quite simple yet can get rather challenging! Anyways, love the videos! I could go on forever myself about Game Boy. It has given me hundreds of hours of fun 🤩

Always glad to hear about some great Game Boy games! I have Adventure as well as all three Legend games, but I just haven't gotten around to the rest yet. I've played a bit into FFL2, but I didn't finish it. I'd love to get back to it someday or even start it over again. I liked it a lot better than the first Final Fantasy Legend game.

Great video. I would suggest checking out Ninja Gaiden Shadow, which was apparently developed initially not as a Ninja Gaiden game but as the Game Boy counterpart of a different NES title, Shadow of the Ninja. Operation C is also worth mentioning as part of the Contra series, and Hammerin' Harry: Ghost Building Company is a solid game though the NES one never released in North America.

Shadow of the Ninja sequel eh? But secretly disguised as Ninja Gaiden? Colour me intrigued! Thanks about Operation C and Hammerin' Harry! I'll try to track those two down!
