This channel is dedicated to playing through my retro video game collection. Though I love retro RPGs the most, you'll see all different kinds of games played on this channel.
All video is recorded using authentic cartridges and hardware.

I never knew about the jail cell softlock. However, there is ANOTHER soft lock in the Egyptian Pyramid level... There are floating stones that permanently disappear after you walk on them. There is a path that you can take that will trap you without escape. Worse, there is a save point available while being softlocked, and you guessed it, I had saved my game after the softlock. ... The gamer rage in 12 year old me was very real that day.
I remember a glitch that put you on the non walkable green area of the overworld. You jump as you move back and forth between screens, and end up on the area you aren't supposed to be on. Not sure if it could be used to skip areas or get items early, just remember making it glitch.
I really need to give this one another try! I feel like I got just past the part with the organ when playing as a kid, but I can’t remember exactly. It is so tough! The music is fantastic though, and I know what you mean about coming to that victory theme feeling so rewarding 😄 Have really enjoyed watching your videos as I progressively unpack and rearrange from my recent move! Your reviews are very thoughtful and thorough and are helping me come up with a nice list of need-to-play games 😄
It’s a great game but I just cannot play it due to the fact of how the enemies appear out of bubbles or eggs or whatever the fukkk they’re supposed to be. You just don’t know what it’ll be when they appear or where they were prior to spawning. Was it some kinda underworld? Did each enemy have its own underworld? Ah, the joys of having autism lol
I played this one a TON as a kid (well, Pc Engine's Adventure Island - I had no idea it was a port/adaptation at the time). Awesome game. The modern remake was a nice trip to memory lane.
My brother still has his copy of this. We play this, Bad Dudes and Pinbot whenever we see each other. Nothing quite like retro games for this old dude. If you're into this kind of game you ought to try ShadowGate,Deja Vu and The Uninvited.
I think I haven't finished this video for some reason. : / BLaster Master is fun, but yeah I agree with you a lot. Have you played, Blaster Master Zero? I think you'd really enjoy that game! I got it on Steam.
I know I ended up softlocking after the final boss once because I didn't have something for the incense and had to go back to an earlier password to get it... is that what you mean?
A childhood friend of mine had this game for NES along with the Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Track and Field, and Trojan. We spent a lot of hours playing all of these games together. Even though I'm pretty sure we played this one the least, the aesthetics of Startropics stuck with me the most through the years. I forgot what it was called for many years afterward until I came across it in a game's shop probably about 10-15 years later. I still own it, and its sequel for NES and it's one of my absolute favourites. Wherever you are, Devon, I hope you're well. Thanks for the excellent video! I always love seeing how different people adapt to this game's mechanics. The dungeon segments have such an interesting rhythm to them once you get used to the controls, but it's definitely a learning curve.
Having never played this game before, it strieks me that it seems really frustrating. I'm not sure I'd call it 'difficult', but it certainly seems to have a lot of design choices like the rooms that instantly kill you, the lives that won't ebe returned, having you exit the dungeons on your own instead of automatically if you win the boss fight, the boss fights themselves... a lot of things here that sound like they make for cheap deaths, rather than tricky puzzzles. But if you have such a positive view on them despite all that, the game must have some pretty stellar qualities despite itself.
@@hungrygoriya (no spoiler) try it coop, even if only a bit. The game is heavily flawed but i guarentee you and a friend will laugh your rears off a few times. Ill leave it there. Its worth experiencing first with a pal
I love how experimental game design was back in the NES era. Developers didn't always shoehorn themselves into a single genre. Stuff like Castlevania 2, Zelda 2 and Star Tropics had such heavy RPGs vibes, but they were their own thing too.
Oh wow, this is a blast from the past! I just discovered your channel yesterday through the Star Tropics video, which popped up on my sidebar. (That was also a great trip down nostalgia lane.) I had a Game Gear but only ever had a couple games for it and this was one of them. I remember liking it a lot, but the Game Gear itself was a huge disappointment. The battery life wasn't the only thing that made it less than ideal as a portable. The screen was horribly reflective, so you were pretty limited to where you could play it and still be able to see the screen. I basically could only play in one spot in the living room where I could sit under a lamp and have it plugged in at all times.
A fine review there Goriya, but one thing to always admire about your game playing ability is your sheer tenacity to recognize a game's shortcomings but still find the willpower and strength to push yourself through it. For as much as I love the game personally, even I can recognize the fact that the game is not the easiest experience to push through but it is simply one of those trial and error style games, and even though much like you I have replayed the same stages over and over again, it gives me such a great feeling of satisfaction when I finally get through them. At least with unlimited continues you never have to worry about starting over the game right from the very beginning once you lose all your lives unlike a lot of other nes games. I still have a tremendous amount of fondness for this game. It's definitely one of my favourite nes games of all time. Even to this day it has my favourite nes box art and all it took was seeing the commercial for this game for the very first time and I was already convinced. I rented this game so many times as a kid and could never beat it as a rental but I felt pretty proud of myself when every time I did rent the game and I got a little further each time, but it wasn't until I actually got to own the game that i finally managed to beat it. I just love the vibrant colours of the awesome opening and the ending was so long, detailed, and by the time the madness was all over - it felt incredibly rewarding. I still hope that one day Nintendo will come back to this franchise but it may not be feasible to do so since there are very few people that even recognize what Startropics is except for those that truly grew up during the time of the nes.
My love for Startropics and it's sequel knows no bounds! Bought the game with my twin brother and played it endlessly. One memory that is etched in me was trying to figure out the sub frequency. Me and my brothers trying in vein to figure it out, then one afternoon I was looking through the box while my brother was playing and remembered about the yellow letter that was included. I jumped to my feet, bellowing out "I FIGURED IT OUT!" raced to the bathroom turn the tap on and dipped the bottom portion of the letter. (You should have seen the look on my face when I saw that invincible ink come to life LOL) as I bolted back to the living room I was yelling "I got it, I got it! it's 747!!!" :) What an amazing game, and it's a real SHAME that Nintendo hasn't made it into a franchise! Could you imagine a SUPER Startropics for the SNES or even a Game Boy entry. Great video Hungry Goriya, and great memories going to Canada's Wonderland as well.
You also forgot to mention you also need to be specific level to hurt enemies as well, notably bosses. Nothing sucks worse then going into a boss room and being trapped because you have no way to damage the boss. There is also the matter of the elemental immunities mixed in as if you have no way if you are failing because of low level or wrong element... As far as elemental immunities go, a lot of games like Zelda have obstacles that don't let you pass until you have the right item, and sometimes that obstacle is an enemy and that item is a weapon or attack. Having said that, Crystalis problem is the same as Mega Man where you have to go into the Pause Screen to pull out an item/weapon, but then again, so is Zelda. I believe the NES manual for Zelda points out that you have the ability to "switch weapons quickly" i.e. go into the Pause menu, and then select items while the enemies can't attack you. Heck, in Teringama for the SNES the character has a box he can Jump into that is functionally a pause screen). NES games didn't really have quick-switch options like they do today.
I didn't mention that because I never experienced it personally. I had no idea that was an issue until after I published this video and a few people mentioned it! I don't mind menuing in games to swap weapons, but Crystalis' menus felt a bit confusing for me compared to other games. There wasn't a lot of good feedback to let you know what you'd selected or not from my recollection. Anyway, I just played a Zelda 1 Randomizer that used the select button to swap items on the fly, and it made all the difference. While not possible for all games at the time, it's a cool quality of life thing that doesn't really make the game easier at all, just more convenient.
It was my first RTS game too! And, I had a similar experience to yours, where I tried other RTS games (including Blizzard's other offerings) and found them way too sparse and lacking. You can select units, groups or structures and hit some key combination to define them as hotkeys. I forget the exact combo. Then when you double tap the associated key, the camera jumps to the thing immediately. That's important to know for any of the fast-paced situations. My internet friends and I made countless custom maps for SC and BW. Everything from RPGs where you could upgrade your unit's stats and unlock new abilities with points (usually earned through kills or discovering secrets) to fanfic-type stories about us (which usually involved us fighting Barney or Pokemon) to holdout scenarios where you started with an insane base and had to survive event-spawned, timed waves of enemies. Many good times were had just screwing around in the level editor, borrowing music from other games, and loading it into custom SC maps. This was before the days of "memes" as we know them now. There were humor trends, but those were mostly confined to specific websites, so all of our jokes were our own. I may get back into making those maps just to create closure on the whole thing. :)
Strong video start, with the best music of the game :D Fantastic GB game, though the "Palm Trees" gave me troubles as a kid... I played it in french (game was titled Mystic Quest) but I don't remember how (bad?) the hint was translated... I'd say its main drawback is inventory management: frequent weapon switching and limited inventory spaces
