In campaign, you will need to transition into Naginata Samurai in the late game, because while Katana Samurai can defeat most enemy Samurai, Naginata samurai are arrow sponges who can counter cavalry as well

@@ShinobiRanger with gold armor upgrade they can even tank fire arms. They have than 12 armor. Bullet proved Samurai have only 9 armor.

@@jarlnils435 yes but you're most likely never going to encounter any firearms because of the time and effort needed to research the facilities. Even then, the firearm units are horribly outranged by archers. Remember Bulletproof Samurai have base armour of 9, without any upgrades. A gold tier armour improvement will also boost Bulletproof Samurai armour by +5 to armour of 14. The major advantage is Naginata Samurai are available to every faction, and in unlimited numbers, whereas Bulletproof Samurai can be recruited only by the Date clan and they have a unit cap of 10.

@@ShinobiRanger I think about it this way, if the armor can stop bullets, it will tank arrows even better.

@@jarlnils435 yes that will work but as I have already said in campaign not even one clan will bother with firearms because a lot of research is required just to unlock the gunsmith building, then you have to build it, then train troops. If you are playing as the Otomo you will have an easier time acquiring guns, but they are the exception.

Yes, or else just train Katana Samurai. Yari Ashigaru can be used to defend castles effectively you progress mid to late game, where you would have enough funds to field and maintain full Samurai armies. Or if you want quantity over quality, you can amass cheap Ashigaru armies.

It's not that close. The Ashigaru in Yari Wall can fight back better and kill more Samurai, but one on one they will definitely lose. There is only one unit which can ruin all infantry. Just wait for the upcoming videos to find out.

Yes katana samurai for main front line and naginata samurai on the flanks. Ideally 4 units of katana samurai, 2 units of naginata samurai one on each side, and 2 units of naginata samurai in reserve behind the front line close to the cavalry, one unit on each wing of the cavalry.

No that won't work because when the Yari Ashigaru try to adopt a tighter formation their formation will be broken and the Samurai will easily be able to flank the tighter formation.

No, you can't change to yari wall stance when your unit is already engaging in battle

I have test it, mix of long and original yari vs katana samurai, i made the cost balanced on both side, and the result: The army size of yari is bigger and the amount of casualties from yari is just half of the samurai (i didn't chase the samurai while they're routing and totally lose)

The tests are being conducted on 0 XP rank, raw recruits. You can assess the staying power of the ashigaru without upgrades in terms of their exchange rate with the samurai here because in campaign you have building effects and general traits affecting unit performance.

@@ShinobiRanger the problem with that is that, by the time you get naginata samurai in a campaign, your yari will already be 2-3 xp levels up.

@@alexgee6393 XP won't protect yari ashigaru from arrows though. They get easily shredded due to their low armour, whereas naginata samurai start off with a high armour value. And naginata samurai only require the 2nd tier of the yari drill yard chain. So it's not difficult to obtain them. Yes, yari ashigaru are available from the get go, but they easily die from arrow fire, even they have gold tier armour improvement from the smithing building and encampment.

@@ShinobiRanger yes but we're talking about in a 1v1 situation. Aren't we? To get to the second stage of the yari tree you need to research quite far. Most people don't really prioritize it either combining these factors means that by the time you're able to recruit naginata, yari will have enhanced stats. Thus the outcome of a 1v1 will change. Even upgrading castles increases the xp of yari recruits.

@@alexgee6393 Facing campaign based enemy armies, the enemy archers will loose volleys as soon as the yari ashigaru are in range, even as their own infantry advance into combat. Usually the enemy AI recruits yari samurai en masse with xp for infantry. Even if I have archers targeting their samurai, remember that ashigaru base armour is lower compared to samurai base armour, so my yari wall lines will be softened up by a higher margin, even if I have gold tier armour because the starting armour value is less. Samurai with gold tier armour will inevitably have higher value than gold tier armour ashigaru. That time, 1v1 will go badly for the ashigaru. Also, the enemy AI usually mobs their infantry around the flanks, so ashigaru will not able to hold the line for long enough, given their lower morale, even with xp ranks.

@@joelleyva9858 Infantry front line of 8 units - 1. 4 units of Katana Samurai and 4 units of Naginata Samurai or 2. 4 units of Katana Samurai, 2 Naginata Samurai and 2 Naginata Warrior Monks or 3. 8 units of Naginata Samurai if you don't want variety and prefer a single unit frontline 1 General is mandatory in your army 2 Yari Cavalry and 2 Katana Cavalry - Left flank - 1 Yari Cavalry + 1 Katana Cavalry Same on right flank. Don't go full Yari Cavalry. Katana Cavalry can rear charge and stay in the thick of the fighting unlike Yari Cavalry who'll get wrecked if they stay for even a few seconds. 7 Bow Warrior Monks - they have 175 range so they will outrange the enemy, not good if they are being shot at, have low armour so be careful. This is my balanced build. I don't use No-Dachi Samurai because you have to be very aggressive then, and No-Dachi Samurai will get shredded by arrow fire. Katana Samurai can atleast hold the line due to their decent armour and defense along with their good attack. They can defeat Naginata Samurai. Feel free to adjust accordingly.
