LDC Tech it’s because people like Page, who I do enjoy, play licks that are not very hard but sound hard to play. Guitarists with intermediate skills can learn them so they hype him up to inflate the level of their own skills. That’s why some of these people slate Yngwie, Loomis. Becker etc because they’d have zero shot of playing like them. So if they say those guys are shit, then they can avoid playing the “shit player” licks.

LDC Tech it’s called flowing melody n it’s easier on the ears and it’s definitely a popular style to listen too whereas neoclassical is a fringe thing in popular music .

@@charlieharper886 I could say the same thing about yngwie. Page uses lots of interesting chord voicing and that sound much more musical to me than yngwies constant power chords. But I'm just playing devils advocate. I love the fact that yngwies bends are always pitch perfect and I miss it when listening to Page or Hendrix. Different styles i guess.

who tf cares about what the world has to say.. malmsteen has inspired generations of guitar players, i don't see or hear all those musical geniuses who criticise yingwie,have the same impact these are the people the world has not heard of,and never will because of their narrow minded way of thinking yingwie on the other hand followed his passion and is living his life the way he wanted to ..still inspiring countess other guitarists

Thanks for the lesson. It doesnt matter if 'he' doesnt play like that. learn the riffs and make it your own. Ditto. And Malmsteen most definately uses these note sequences.

7:17 I wonder if the finger pattern used to playin for example A, B and C notes using index, middle and ring fingers, as the way Yngwie or Andy do, instead of the standard index, ring and pinky, is meditated or just an instinctive and natural way for them...

3, 4 and a little of 5 def. can hear the yjm sound esp number 4 which sounds very close to one of the main trilogy suite riffs. This guys tone is much more muffled and processed for my taste though. The first 2 sweeping licks sound nothing like Yngwie in my opinion.

What is the mode? Has Yngwie any preferred as e.g. Stve Vai probably likes Lydian? Yngwie as I noticed likes arpegios, but they can be played in any mode IMHO. Excellent lesson!

Yngwie often plays Phrygian Dominant, also known as "Spanish" Phrygian. It's the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor, so it's like playing off of E7b9 within A harmonic minor.

Strat neck pickup, hall-type reverb (mix at 9 o'clock, decay at 9 o'clock) and analog delay setting between 300-400ms (mix at 9 o'clock, feedback at 7 or 8 o'clock). MK

Correction: "5 Yngwie Malmsteen Licks You Need To Know that aren't Yngwie Malmsteen Licks." •Lick 1: Diminished 7th arpeggios •Lick 2: More diminished 7th arpeggios •Lick 3: Descending pedal-point (first note is closest thing to an actual Yngwie lick...if one note can even be a "lick") •Lick 4: Descending 16th note triplet sequence •Lick 5: Ascending 16th note triplet sequence *Note: Hairband, standard tuning, and 24th fret make these double plus Yngwie licks!

I don't feel like some of these licks are exactly what Yngwie played... more inspired by them... the 4th lick sounds more like john petruccis best Yngwie impression.. no mention of Yngwies use of economy picking either which is kind of missing the point .. lick 5 is the worse one imo

I'm pretty sure Yngwie doesnt play like that. His articulation and curious sound comes from the fact that most of the time he doesn't use straight alternate picking. In fact, every time he plays an odd number of notes in a lick that moves across two or more strings he uses legato or sweeping. That tells me that, for at least licks number 4 and 5, he would never play them like that. Having said that, great playing! And those licks are very cool as well.

Very good point. I've been paying closer attention lately to his picking and I've noticed these things too. He only really uses alternate picking when playing 6 note sequences/two string/single string ideas.

@@BenMcrea61 It's rather Yngwie's style and choice to play it his way than the lack of ability. He simplified or adapted playing the guitar to suit his style and it works very well for him. Yngwie is arrogant AF but a genius never the less.

A video where the guy plays slowly, where you can change the speed and yet, all I can read in the comments are: - Those are not Malmsteen licks - Malmsteen has no soul - Malmsteen is an average player - (name of a great guitarist) is better than Malmsteen (yes, and so what?) - Andy James your guitar tone sucks (but not his playing hopefully) If internet had a dumpster it would be RU-vid comment section. Actually all of these licks he would never play, they're in a Malmsteen vein but I've studied his technique and although similar, not how he'd do it.

Not knocking what Andy's doing here but Yjm would never do a downstroke as the last note on a string when doing descending run and crossing over to a lower string. Maybe he'd do it on the highest two strings which are easier to pick through but not on the other strings. He always uses a downward picking slant and an downstroke would trap the pick. The solution is for him to either pull off to the last note of the string or slide into it. He rarely picks EVERY note especially when string crossing. He also uses economy picking for ascending runs and finishing on a downstroke.

Hansell Santana lol it has more to do with the mechanics than preferences. If you only have two or three notes per string.. by law, there's no need for a pinky

Hmm, not sure. He's also inconsistent when he does use it. He'll utilize it a bit in a slowed-down demonstration, and then use a different fingering up to tempo.

Dude, you're really good, but having that many repeats on your delay kinda makes it ridiculous. A single, tight repeat (to help thicken your tone) is all you need. Great vid, but so much ddl makes it sorta cheesy.

YJM's phrasing is too one dimensional and never allows you to fuse with another style, without sounding Malmsteen ish. I guess thats the nature of Phrygian dominant

mrmaybe maybe....mr! no I'm not haha don't get me wrong he's a fantastic guitarist that goes without saying and a fantastic songwriter, he's got so many great qualities about him which I admire, but when it comes to his solo's and shred stuff it's all the same and it gets a bit much, he doesn't do to much to break it up and give it versatility which ends up boring, there's so much more to improv and music than running up and down scales and arpeggios as quick as you can, but nonetheless he is great

Well, you haven't been paying much attention to his playing as he incorporates way more licks than this in his playing. If you really studied his playing, you'd realize that these aren't even his licks really. They are similar licks at best. Some of his most renowned licks aren't even in this like the ascending/descending diminished sequences of fours and petal tone ideas. Those are the most obvious examples. I do, however, agree that there isn't much variety to his playing.

if I didn't pay attention I wouldn't get bored simple as, because I do pay a great deal of attention I know what's the same, descending in groups of four whether it's diminished or not is nothing special, it's quite boring and repeats itself, you know where it's going just like groups of 3, I'm not hating on the guy he's got great songs, outstanding vibrato, passion and lots of intricate songs, rather than saying it's all he does he takes the same principles and changes them around a little but it's sill very similar to what's in this video. But yeah his solo's are too much the same for me

If it was 1987 this would be cool. Nothing against harmonic minor, but to base one's entire career on this sound alone is very limited. And to not even explore the harmony lying within this scale (mM7, m7b5, +M7, etc.) would be yet another lack of vision. Modes of harmonic minor??? What do you mean lol..! You hear one yngvie solo, you've heard them all. That's why nobody listens to him anymore. And anybody who plays like him wouldn't get a gig if their life depended on it. However, if you're content to play 1 scale for your entire life -Rock on!!!

yngwie malmsteen is average at best. no feel in his playing, or at least, its pretend. he just plays the same things and scrunches his face up at times. Thats just my speculation.
