Thanks for a great gear! I've been told that you like to have the gears with prime numbers of tooth, or at least no common divider, to equalize the tooth wear.

Hi. I also printed this gearbox in SLA method. It is pretty amazing. Tonight I am assembling it and test it. My project is an electric bike and I want to use your gearbox connected to a brushless outrunner motor wig belt drive. I will film all the steps and share. Once again thanks for the stp files. They are a good starting point in any products with gear reduction. Cheers!

you could cast each individual gear in maybe iron or copper and then make a full sturdy load-proof gearbox :)

ZA12 or ZA27 is your friend. Can melt it on a halfway decent open flame gas burner, and it has better tribological properties than pretty much anything else. Probably a lot less forgiving to precision errors than plastics... but id really like to see someone try...

When I made this video the logic was turning the input until the output makes a full rotation and count the turns. There is a formula in the description of the newer “how to make a compound planetary” video that I did.

how did you calculate the ratio? from what I see one set is a 4:1 and the other is 4.8:1
@gert_kruger
@gert_kruger Год назад
The usual gear ratio calculations for the C-PTG is not valid due to the presence of the constrained first ring. Think of it like this: suppose the first and second stages of the PTG had the same gear ratios, if the first ring is constrained to stand still then the second would reproduce it's output. Since the gear ratios are slightly off the second ring speed can deviate slightly.

Hello! to power these gears you need to attach a motor to one side of the gear. In this possition, the weight of the gear is always creating a unbalancing force on one side of the arm (or whatever the gear is driving...). Is it possible to build a gear like this that allows to insert the motor "inside" the gear axially to avoid torque creating by the motor weight on the joint ?
@ivangutowski
@ivangutowski 3 года назад
I am looking at a situation like this - you can use a 'lazy Suzan bearing' to achieve this

@vrwalk5816
@vrwalk5816 3 года назад
can you make one that can drive backwards? a 1:5 or 1:10 or what ever maximum ? People say its not possible to drive backwards for one turn of a motor to get 10 turns at the end of the box. But what if you have a planetary gear box driving the backwards side so that it is half what the backwards planetary box was. So you have a motor, then a 5:1 driving a 1:10, if having a 1:10 would not be able to be driven by just the motor.

Hi, I'm trying to print and build this gearbox, but the issue I'm having is that the ring gear gaps seem to be stretched apart too far when the planet gears pass over them. This causes the turning of the sun gear to be jumpy. I printed the files from thingiverse using the exact wall thickness and infill settings you mention at the beginning of this video. Any ideas what I should do to fix this?
@GearDownForWhat
@GearDownForWhat 7 лет назад
Make sure you phase the arrows right and check that your layer height isn't more that .2 and maybe check your calibration. This gearbox shouldn't be that tight. If you can hold the rings tightly together and spin it with a drill it will free up nicely.
@JuliusBangert
@JuliusBangert 7 лет назад
Yea. No, I definitely can't hold it tight and spin the gears, I can't even get the edges of the ring gear gaps to touch each other. I'm fairly sure I've phased it correctly please could you have a look at my 'I made this' entry to your thingiverse upload to see if you can identify a problem.
@GearDownForWhat
@GearDownForWhat 7 лет назад
Yeah i saw your pictures, me and others have printed this with no issues. I know it fits together. There is no magical fix for this you have to print a calibration cube and measure it with a digital caliper. make sure your measuring your filament with a caliper and entering the diameter into your slicer. you really need some accuracy to print gears.
@JuliusBangert
@JuliusBangert 7 лет назад
I'm kind of new to 3d printing. I have a monoprice select mini and I'm slicing your models in Cura. My layer height is set to 0.2, the line width is 0.4 and the flow is 100%. I don't know about calibrating my printer so please forgive my ignorance. I'd really like to accurately be able to print gears and moving parts.
@_Palatis

backlash... doesn't matter how tight you couple the gears, the gears wears their own backlashes out. that's with every gearing system.

@@GearDownForWhat Just so you know, cycloid gear systems don't have mandatory backlash, are 3d printable and have very strong reductions if set up to be that way. If that's something you're still looking to achieve.

Never lubricate a stepper motor. It will cause permanent damage. If the stepper motor isn't spinning freely, the motor needs to be replaced/decommissioned.

Okay, just making sure. It threw me off when you acted like you didn't know about the two different sizes of planet gears. And then scaling them down to fit just didn't make sense when they should be designed with proper parameters. So when you say scaled down, do you mean shrinking the borders in your slicer?
@GearDownForWhat
@GearDownForWhat 7 лет назад
When I said I scaled them down I meant that I actually made them smaller and I later realized that was a mistake cause by me not knowing how important it is to orient the arrows correctly. At that point I was really new to this concept and still trying to figure it out.

yes but you will not be able to hold the drill still. Will twist and break your hand. So to prevent that you still need the bar, or fix it somehow against ground.
