CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) clips his hair off because he will start chemotherapy soon.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Written by Will Reiser who based the film on his own experiences fighting cancer, Jonathan Levine's poignant comedy 50/50 stars Joseph Gordonn-Levitt as Adam, a 27-year old public radio employee who discovers he has cancer. As his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) tries to help out, his girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) proves to be a less than ideal life partner for this particular crisis. All the while, Adam's overprotective mother Diane (Anjelica Huston) tries to overcome her son's continued attempts to keep her out of his life. As Adam begins to discover how hard it is to deal with his situation, and to maintain various relationships in his life, he begins seeing a young counselor (Anna Kendrick) who might prove to be just as helpful personally as she is professionally. Matt Frewer and Philip Baker Hall co-star as Adam's fellow chemotherapy patients.

I read somewhere that this scene was mostly improvised since they only had one shot to do it right. The dialogue feels so natural, I bet it was improvised for the most part.

I mean, I know for a fact this scene was practiced many times over in terms of the dialogue and mannerisms... You know that's possible right, they didn't have to shave his head for real until they really needed too? The scene wasn't filmed until the actors had all this down pat, sure the reactions were slightly genuine, but the dialogue and fact of what was about to happen had been gone over many many times by the time you see this scene. "Improvised" sure in an extremely controlled environment.... You make it seem like they just handed these dudes an electric razor and said go to town we'll put on film whatever you say.. This is most definitely not the case.

apply a light coating of shaving cream to scalp, and use face razor of ones choice. I've heard that womens razors are better for the scalp, though it may depend on person

Yup. It was supposed to be special effects and make up but Joseph was genuine in doing this to show how commited he was to this role AND that he actually donated his hair to charity for it.
