When you have a general idea of your bouquet recipe, it’s easy to use simple math to figure out how many stems you need. In this video, we work through all those calculations, which even helps how many buckets I’ll need to order. Then we walk through how to calculate how much growing space you need based on 9in x 9in spacing.

Jesse, I value your channel immensely. The information you provide, your thought process, your maths, the way you communicate. Thank you! I'm in my first year of trade on my micro flower farm. This is my third grow season. Time to get serious on the math so I can have a profitable business.

Great video! You could get a lot more plants per bed if you wanted, the way you worked this out is you have 9x12 spacing for your rows, but you could easily do a 9x9 which would give you 5 rows. You can also plant on a triangular pattern instead of square, which will also increase your number of plant number to about hundred more than your original estimate.

Yes absolutely! I plan on doing 4 inch and 6 inch spacing for some varieties. Even though I will be transplanting, I will likely be direct sowing a majority of the warm loving flowers via an earth seeder hence why I went with rows to in this exercise 🙃

Great plan! The only thing I would suggest is going a little closer if you're growing single stem sunflowers. A 9" spacing will let them grow very thick stems, and very large heads,aking it difficult to work into bouquets! I made that mistake my 1st year! 😆 If you pklant them 5-6" inches apart they'll stay perfect size for bouquets & their stems wont be 3/4" in diameter!

Yes! I started spacing my sunflowers anywhere from 4-6 inches apart. I realized this luckily before I planted them ☺️

I love the way you broke this down and worked it all out - you're the first one I've seen do this for cut flowers on RU-vid. Thank you! Okay... totally nerding out here: I was wondering... aren't you cheating yourself out of a full row of flowers by saying that in a 4' bed you only have 4 rows? By my math, at 9x9 spacing in a 48" wide bed, you actually have 5 rows with 3" leftover... is that right or am I missing something? That would give you 284 plants per bed (5*53), 71 extra plants. In fact... if you decreased your spacing to 8x8 you could get 6 rows and an extra 7 plants per row, which works out to another 76 plants per bed. That could make a big difference with limited space / compost. I've heard that even with Pro-Cuts, going with a smaller spacing, something like 6x6 yields blooms more suitable for a bouquet - not quite as big as they get with a bigger spacing. I look forward to cheering you on this Summer as you make profit in your first year. 😊
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm 2 года назад
You are absolutely right on the spacing! I've been doing some more reading and will likely be going with what you suggested for the procuts. And you are also right on cheating myself out of a full row. I'm actually now going to reduce the width of my beds (I want to save my back!) and realized that I can still basically achieve the same amount of plants based on what you're saying. I do find that for explanation purposes, thinking about each foot as a single row makes it easier for people to comprehend the calculations!

@@bareflowerfarm It often feels to me like there are about a bazillion different ways to do flowers - and it's probably true because everyone's tiny little micro-climate is different enough to make a difference. I'm grateful to be figuring this out with you and that you're sharing your knowledge and asking such great questions. It's all stuff I know I *should* do but find so easy to skip.

Excellent video. Also consider doubling up on space. What do I mean by that? As I mentioned before I grow three bulbs in one gallon pots to sell in the spring and dinnerplate dahlias to grow in the last summer/early fall. They grow in the same space. As the tulip and daf pots are pulled and sold right before I plant the dahlias, I have then in the same space, in the same planting grid. As each pot gets pulled up to sell, it leaves a hole for the dahlia tuber to go in. In my small city lot this is an invaluable way to double the amount of space I have in my front garden. Also, I plant sweet peas behind both against a fence. Sweet peas take up very little room and are blooming profusely when the dahlias are small. Surprisingly the shade the full grown dahlias provide the feet of the sweet peas means the sweet peas bloom all summer long, even when it gets hot. This year I will be expanding on this thought process by planting a long, thin row of procut sunflowers at 5" spacing, about 4 plants wide and 20ft long. Below I will plant cosmos for air, they will do fine in the shade, just not bloom as well, as well as lots of Astilbe for spikes. I am doing five beds that are 4x8 in a more traditional bulk flower planting that will lean heavily on spring/early summer as the dahlias are my bread and butter later on, at which point the cosmos should start to flower more as the sunflowers will be no more.
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm 2 года назад
Absolutely, the key to profitability is intensive plantings made possible by succession sowing. Less area to prep and maintain = less costs! A part of what I'm trying to figure out right now is do I leave certain plants (ie snapdragons) in the ground during the summers to wait for another fall flush when a more valuable crop can be put in? It's likely I will rip them out but I'm thinking I actually may have enough space to have the luxury to keep them in!
@EvelynM-vlogs
@EvelynM-vlogs 2 года назад
@@bareflowerfarm i can't help you with that. This is the first year I am doing flowers for between the bulbs and the dahlias so I'm playing it by ear right now too. My additions are Bachelor's Buttons, Snap Dragons, Sunflowers, Cosmos and maybe Zinnias if I have room. Zinnias are much the same season as dahlias so they are the least of my concerns for this year. My dahlias last until an average of mid Oct. I may dapple in straw flowers for drying, I have the seeds, but I doubt I will have the room for them. My space is tiny compared to yours.

Great video. If your farmer's market is every other weekend what will you do with the flowers that you have to cut in between? Most of those cut and come again plants need to be cut weekly and some even twice a week to encourage them to keep producing. If you have access to a cooler you may be able to hold some of them for a few days.

I just found your channel and subbed! I'm going to sell 3 for $5 Sunflowers because they are $1.78 a piece online. What do you think? FYI- I think that Sunflowers would do much better if they are pro-cut, 6 inch spaced apart. The heads are bouquet worthy and the stems are not as thick. Pinching branching Sunflowers,and 9x9in apart, will give you 4 good sized stems. If, you used more it would take lots of space away. Procut are easy to calculate for me,Lolz! I had to dive deeper due to space restrictions in the 1st year. Secondly, Snapdragons can be placed 4 inches apart. To maximize the bed space. I thought about using 9X9 spacing but after seeing how many plants I have already I really want to get it correct being a 1st time Flower/Florist. Amaranth wants 12 inch spaced, but 9x9 would work for a cut flower biz Farmer/Florist. I am moving February 1st to 1.6 acre Homestead. I understand completely. Thanks for sharing this video on pricing, I haven't found any channels for the topic. I just learned about garden layout. How to calculate spacing, from NorthLawn Flower farm RU-vid channel. Good luck, Love the Creator and Walk in Beauty AHAVA

Thank you for this! Funny timing bc I also revisited my spacing and came to the same conclusion about sunflowers. I was thinking also about reducing the snapdragon space so good to see your recommendation here. I may do a trial of both to see which does better ☺️. And yes to 3 for $5 sunflower bunches. I plan to do the same too!!

Absolutely helpful! Does the math change much if you do staggered planting?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm 2 года назад
This is a good question and I don’t think staggered planting impacts the math. The real question is how many stems can I get off of say a single zinnia plant which would impact how often I need to stagger! Experience tells me I should prob expect 1-2 dozen but I haven’t grown all the varieties! Does that make sense? Lmk if you have any input on this!
@melissaschnieders7069
@melissaschnieders7069 2 года назад
@@bareflowerfarm So I've been googling and I did find the Omni Calculator website. If you go to Biology and Plant Spacing, you can enter either a row, square ft or staggered arrangement plus the size of the bed and it will calculate for you. So, my 25'x4' bed, in rows at 9" spacing = 235. Sq ft style = 204 plants. Floret's site also talks about getting more flowers into the same space. :) Hope that helps!

You've got 1) plants per bed and 2) number of stems needed, but how do you translate between these two figures?
@melvinleopoo
@melvinleopoo 8 месяцев назад
How many 4 x 40 beds are needed for your 50 bouquets per week figure?
@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm 8 месяцев назад
This is a really hard question to answer because it will depend on what you're growing. Going into year 3, I can say that 50 bouquets a week is quite a bit. In year 1, I neglected that productivity between different varieties will be different AND a plant may not consistently pump out the same amount of stems per week. I'd probably plan at least 8, 4 x 40 beds for 50 bouquets a week and that's with intensive planting.

@bareflowerfarm
@bareflowerfarm 2 года назад
Yup, both Ammi and Dara could also be considered disk flowers. There's alot that fall into disks and some people don't follow these 5 types of stems for their bouquet recipes (maybe they'll do 3-5). I like Ammi and Dara because they can fill up alot of space and therefore act as both as a disk and even filler. I plan to grow dara next year!
