Amen; while I do love Doujins even I can admit; homosexual relationships are still human relationships. We deal with personal problems and everyday life problems just like everyone else
2 years later, and the speech still gets me. as a lesbian, there is constant fetishizing of our sexuality, and i know it’s the same for gay men as well. it makes me happy that it got recognized, even if this is a series played for comedy.
Absolutely! I myself am a Bi girl, and that is pretty much taken in a "slutty/greedy" kimd of way, as well. I have also been guilty of the Fujoshi Syndrome, when I was a teen, so I can now understand both sides, and I know (at least in *that* case) come from a place of malice, more like ignorance or misguidance. However, it's still a very relevant issue that goes mostly unadressed, and I'm very happy I got to see it dealt with in here! 😊
Absolutely! I keep coming back for it! As a bi person, I really respect them for including that. Edit: just realized Wanda and I both started our reply with "Absolutely!" XD
Sparky was coming to terms with their own queerness at the time, and realizing how weird and creepy tumblr shipping culture was. They wrote the speech as a kind of "look this is jokey but plz don't actually be creepy"
LOL. I love how Nagisa and Rei's relationship has actually gone somewhere. Thought it was gonna always just be Nagisa harassing Rei, but they're actually together.
And what I really appreciate is that Octo doesn't make their relationship a big deal. Nagisa just mentions it and nobody in the room bats an eye (even Gou, who literally worships yaoi)
Darn, I started watching this series thinking of it as a massive joke, something to watch to get a good laugh, but.....this funny little series has heart. It has character development. It has a story, subplots, and makes the audience fall in love with the crazy, offbeat characters. This story is amazing, and Octopimp, thank you so much for making this series. 50% off made me break out in laughter, but it surprised me and made me love this batch of weirdos. Thanks for the journey Octopimp, and everyone else who’s worked on this amazing, hilarious, and rambunctious series.
Crazy how no one's responding because... You've said it all, if you pay attention there's soo much more then jocke's on weed and crime, and that's partly why it's so great (the other part is the dialogue/character/voice actor/timing XD) Anyway, like they've just said, thank you for bringing this amazing serie to life!!
to reiterate, nagisa didn't say shipping was bad, he said fetishizing ships is bad, making the ship all about being two men/women, focusing solely on the sex, calling it 'sin' is bad, it hurts the lgbt community, it doesn't help, it just ostracizes them. So basically, if you want to help the community, recognize that there is a difference between shipping something just because its 'cute' or 'hot' and shipping because of an actual bond the two characters share.
Nope. Besides, kids don't ship thing properly now a days. Yaoi was made for women just like most erotica is written for women. Plus real shipping people do not ship real life people. That's disgusting.
Yeah, pansexual transman myself. I love queer romance so of course I joined in the yaoi and yuri fandoms (the only gay exposure I had in high school). Half the fandom seems to get it and writes and draws lovely, real relationships, while the other half makes it a fetish to just shove two hot people together without regard for their actual character as people. I still consider myself a yaoi/yuri fan, but I hate the reputation the latter half has earned us ^^;
More people who don't understand Yaoi. It was made by a woman for women. These "popular" yaoi's do not show what most Yaoi is. Yes it can have sex but they are very romanic stories. It's like a straight manga. Samething, get over it. You're sexuality does not make you special.
Zero Todona no ones sexuality makes anyone better than anyone else. lmao chill. (The term yaoi is so jokey i wouldnt even use it with my coworkers. saying Gay terminology, gay sex, gay relationships just kinda covers an overall a ship culture I prefer to shine. yaoi sounds like something a devinantart artists wants. ANYWAY) and yeah For women. By women. woopdee do. (i see some point of that mention but like i dont give a crap on who made it? obama could have invented it. its all about why and how this affects a huge communities and what the repercussions of the leftover reputation it leaves. dont be so upset about the fact people dont wanna be in some ancient label
MariktheGunslinger nope. it was a problem for a very long time. Yuri on ice is very positive representation even if it wasn't ment to be. and I think the peek of fetishizing gay people is Superwholock
I still can't get over the fact that the Haru Horde subplot actually had a climactic payoff that exemplified Haru's character development outside of the "He's insane" gag.
I'm glad I watched this series even though I never watched Free. As a whole, 50% off is actually a really good show that ties in humor but also some serious moments. Even Haru's internal monologues were a beautifully used plot device.
1:40 Thank you for this. Also: why I do not trust anyone who calls Yuri on Ice a yaoi unironically, or anyone who calls themselves fujoshi. Gay people are not pieces of meat for you to drool over.
SuzushinaYuriko it's a shonen ai in all technicalities due to the much more than friendly interactions between victor and yuri (even one of the characters exclaiming that they're engaged at episode 10 i believe? And no one denies it) but that's besides the point. Anyways while I don't condone the ideas many fujoshi have about gay men I call myself one due to the fact that, while I may enjoy a good smutty yaoi on a blue moon many stories within BL (at least the good ones anyways) have taught me real issues that lgbt people face or problems that arises from their preference within Japan's relm (like how most don't want to be out of the closet due to the cultural norm to be hush hush about certain things.) Plus due to my family's history with spanish Catholicism I don't think I would've learned all that much about homosexuality if not going through the initial phase of "omg 2 hot guys are kissing, das hawt." lol. The upside is that I got bored of that VERY quickly.
SuzushinaYuriko I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying Yaoi. The only problem is when people only see gay people as shipping material. And some fujoshi understand how gay couples feel. So, don't generalize too much. But you have a great point.
pyropon Yeah, yuri kinda gets on my nerves for that. And now western culture is doing it too. Using boobs on boobs as an excuse for views, when you never see the development of characters. I think you have to have a good balance of the two.
Ah yes, but I love shounen ai/shoujo ai, actual good yaoi, yuri and I myself am a lesbian, in fact most of my friends who like boyxboy stuff are bi girls and lesbians and even a guy or 2. I do agree that what was said rings true, but think it's not fair to paint all fujoshi black in one broad stroke. This is the first I'm hearing of fujoshi/fudanshi being a problematic term.
*nagisa talking about gay men and how they have relationship problems and mental illness and what ever he was talking about in his speech* Nagisa: *mentions mental illness* Me: *flashbacks to the Council of Nine and the other Harus*
Since everyone’s already talking about Nagisa’s speech, I’ll say something else. I like how Rei is just completely owning everything Nagisa says about being in a relationship with him. 😂
I think if they take time for people to reach to the final episode (like i am watching this year later although i started to watch this when they first started doing this parody) they could continue one day? Just my opinion though.. Since 3rd season of Free is now airing i was once more reminded of 50% OFF :) This parody is not going to die off any time soon yet, i bet people commenting every day.
@zirath ashe i think you should watch this video, he explained why he stopped doing them. it’s not only the views that are getting less, it takes time to make these videos and he moved on doing something else ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EfmHjHPEExM.html
"Hey, Makoto" ... "What? Haru's alive?" ... "And he's gonna swim in the relay?" ... "And someone answering questions via phone without hearing the other person on the line is a poor way to give expository information because they just heard the same information in the last scene?"
Show Writer Sparky here! Thanks for watching everyone! I know I don't comment a lot in the youtube section, i keep to my twitter, but I wanted to give some context. I just want to say that the speech that I wrote for Nagisa wasn’t a huge call out against our fans. I love our fans dearly. But entertainment is a form of self expression and you always put parts of yourself into characters that you write. I’ve been doing this show for a few years now and it’s winding towards the end, so why not get a little weird? I wrote Nagisa’s little rant as some one who is a queer individual working and being privy to a culture that fetishizes the queer lifestyle. I don’t think this is MALICIOUS but sometimes its odd and upsetting. 50% Off may be a silly abridged series but it is by and large a show about queer characters, written by myself (a queer person) and made of course with love from both me and Alex alike. I hope we can have some fun with the last few episodes and continue till the end making a goofy show that treats queer people with respect while we poke a little fun. Y’now, and make jokes about supreme brain overlords, cursed amulets, and of course swimming! I love you guys and thank you so much for supporting our show!
LetsPlaySparky I can't speak for all the fans of 50% off, but I'd like to thank you for making this show in the first place. And, as a straight man that's seen anime mostly play off homosexual relationships are either overly fetishised bone-fests or as comic reliefs, I'm glad to see one (even if it is only an abridged series) point out that they're actual characters, not just slabs of man meat. TL;DR- thank you for the brilliant series!!
The rant sounded like it was made by a crying tumblrina SJW, it wasn't funny, took to much time and was all in all uneccesary and out of character for Nagisa.
Sparky, as a gay guy who's loved Free since the beginning but always felt just a bit put off by a fair portion of the fandom's treatment of certain things, thank you so much for Nagisa's bit. It's something so incredibly prevalent in anime, and obviously plays a lot for guys and girls both, in anime and Western media both. As much as I love Free, that's what was so shockingly refreshing about Yuri on Ice; having anime show guys in a canon non-baiting relationship that wasn't at all fetishized, and I'm really glad you put that in there.
1:38-2:40 I want to put this rant on my wall omygod thank you Also I see that people are upset about Nagisa's rant but just consider this: Y'know how creep straight guys fetishizes lesbians? Basically being a fujoshi is the equivalent of that Like guys it's cool to ship gay ships but to the point where you fetishize them? That's what Nagisa is talking about basically.
Okay, hang on a second. As a queer guy, I agree with Nagisa’s rant, and I’m super glad it was included in this series... but I do have to nitpick this comment just a bit. The word “fujoshi” does not mean “a woman who fetishizes gay men.” That’s not why that term was created or why Japanese women began to identify as such. The term was coined by straight Japanese men to refer to Japanese women who enjoyed any fictional content involving gay men. It means “rotten woman” and was basically made as a homophobic slur, because they thought it was gross that anybody would want to view content with gay people because gay people are disgusting to them. The women being targeted by this turned around and reclaimed the term. They were like “so caring about queer stories makes me rotten? Guess I’m rotten then!” In reality, fujoshis in Japan are very likely to be open supporters of the queer community, or in many cases, queer themselves. Yaoi has a lot of problems with stereotypes and dubious consent, and I do want us to be able to look at it objectively and fix those issues, but writing off all yaoi and fujoshis and saying they’re all bad really isn’t the way to do it. I mean, discovering yaoi when I was twelve literally made me realize I was bisexual and liked other boys! The fans of it made me feel like queer boys could be likable and important, rather than simply gross! I get what you’re saying. A lot of girls (specifically the American ones) go too far, they think yaoi is like real life, they obsess over gay men to the point of making actual ones uncomfortable. But a lot of these girls are very young, and we should be gentle in calling attention to their behavior, because for many of them, this is their gateway into being a queer ally. We need to make them realize which of their actions are bad and why, without making them afraid of consuming any queer content or showing support of gay people. Throwing all fujoshis under the bus isn’t the right way to go about things.
Vinnie Kohler OMG THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT. Not all fujoshis are 15 year old weeaboos who fetishize gay men. And that isn't to shame those young girls either because I think we all go through phases of ignorance where we just need to be educated as to the very narrow view we have at the time. As an almost 30 year old fujoshi who has been an ally to the gay community for over 10 years I appreciate this distinction. Yes I ship gay couples but I also attend pride with my friends and have participated politically here in the US in trying to bring light an understanding that gay people are just people who like people of their same gender. I ship gay couples as much as I ship straight and I hate some of the tropes that are prevalent in yaoi but there has been a significant shift from the yaoi we got up until the early 2000s and the yaoi we are getting now. More work needs to be done to dispel some of these trash stereotype but there has been progress.
I Know this is really late but as a lesbian I have to agree. it's sort of like the whole discussion for what should lesbians wear at a wedding. Two suits would be going with what society expects of gays.two dresses would be going with the gender normal and with society expects of a woman. And one suit and one dress is going with the heteronormal and looked down upon. So you might as well go naked. It's the only way that hetero men would accept lesbians anyway
NO I WANTED SEASON 2 I WANTED TO SEE WHAT YOU'D DO WITH SOUSUKE AND MOMO AND KISUMI AND THE EPISODE WHERE THEY GO TO AUSTRALIA but i respect your decision
Rin: Does God feel numb with nothing left to surprise him? Nitori: Sir I love you but you came in fourth. Rin: Am I a God? Nitori: Nope. Rin: Is there nothing left for me? Nitori: Fourth place. Rin: Is this where I die?! Nitori: It was a local high school swim meet, there are like Olympic athletes and stuff! 👏👏👏I'm done
About damn time! However, it sucks that you're ending this series soon T.T I was hoping you would dub Eternal Summer. Ah well. I guess good things must come to an end at some point.
The Council of Nine comprised of Haru, Haru, Haru, Haru, Haru, Haru, Haru, Haru and Haru convened after placing 5th behind Rin. They, along with the Harus of the Night Realm sought to come to consensus on what to tell the people, who had become restless and wanting for answers. To the surprise of the Council, as he was considered slain by Haru of the Council of Nine, Haru returned. He then staged a bloody coup and after murdering all the Council of Nine, and I'm assuming the Harus of the Night Realm, save for one Haru he deemed his thrall. To fill the power vacuum, Haru installed himself as Supreme Overlord Haru and sought to stabilize and point Haru in a more determined direction...and that's about where we are right now. I think I got most of it correct, any questions?
Tbh even though they said they'd continue until the end of season 1 this is still a pretty good finale. (I'm assuming it's done since it's been like 3 years) Nagisa and Rei had a really great relationship arc, Gou got a reality check, the team really came together for the relay race, and Haru's final words were so funny but also kind of deep. This parody had a really great run.
"Sorry to break up this psychic mind-meld, but I have a race to win real fast." - I don't know how, but one day I _will_ find some way to insert this into a conversation I have with a stranger without seeming insane. It'll happen.
"I don't even consider myself to be gay but here I am dating another guy. That's my main bitch right there." "Hello." crying omfg i can't believe rei actually admitted they were together im doubling over laughing this was too perfect
1:40 Truth. But I still say shipping two characters, regardless of gender isn't inherently bad. I also say that assuming all women who watch shows like "Free!" and "Yuri!!! on Ice" are only watching it to masturbate is more than a little extreme...
Yeah but aren't like 90% of YOI fans 'fetishizing homosexual relationships' like Nagina funnily commented? Ik he wasn't on about YOI, but come on, hardly any posts on Tumblr I've seen about that anime have been about anything except the gay stuff. Yet people complain that they love it for the plot. Not just because two guys bang...personally I find YOI incredibly boring.
Actually, YOI is praised because of how the Anime itself treats the characters. You can't really control the fanbase. Fujoshi will be anywhere multiple male characters in an Anime are. The point is, Free!, Super Lovers, Junjo Romantica (not sure if spelled right), etc. are all made specifically for the purpose of fetishism. YOI is not. It's a Sports Anime that happens to develop a same sex romance. That's it. And ironically enough, that made people loose their shit over it. lol
Christine Guthrie I would agree, if it weren't for the fact that 90% of homosexual content from Japan stereotypes couples as one being the effeminate uke and one being the hypermasculine seme and usually produced to make money off of straight women who fetishize it. It still has it's problems.
The context of nagisa's rant was someone shipping "real people" in that kou was shipping people she knew. which is something that actual people do in real life of course it's still weird when it's taken to an extreme to the point where they either infantize gay men or treat the act of consuming gay media like a "sinful guilty pleasure," even if they're only consuming media about fictional characters
Tbh I am a person who ships gay pairings, and I'm happy to see that people are going against who fetishize them, but I hope that people know that being a BL or GL shipper doesn't automatically equate to being a fetishist. Like, seriously people, let's not turn this into yet another huge prejudice that humanity has to deal with.
This is important. Everyone and their bus driver ships BL and GL pairings and there's nothing wrong or "fetishizing" about it. The only thing I see as "fetishizing" is how often yaoi involves creepy noncon situations, or the whole eye-rolling "b-but we're both girls!!" type-lines that are practically impossible for people just wanting to read some cute shoujo-ai to avoid.
Yeah this is definitely because yaoi and yuri are still pretty small, niche things. Never would you see a BL GL relationship in mainstream media as something that's 'normal', so whoever likes those things is seen as a freak.
Agree. I bet they don't even read real Yaoi. Some of it is so heartfelt or kinky, depending on how "erotic" it goes but I never saw it as a fetish. How would they like it if we shit on yuri or their gross futas? It's like.
totty Japan still has a weird thing about gay relationships in their culture though, and whether or not that's supported directly by the government I don't know, but I know it's supported indirectly by their push for more children to be born.
“Sir I love you but you came in 4th” “Am I a God?” “No?” “Is there nothing left for me?” “4th place...” “Is this where I die?” “IT WAS A LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL SWIM MEET! THERE ARE LIKE OLYMPIC ATHLETES AND STUFF!”
I really liked nagisas rant in this. But just remember that you can enjoy yaoi all you want as long as you clearly know the difference between fiction and reality
Bailey Stuber Honestly, this whole 'yaoi makes people think gay men are weird/amusing' thing is way too similar to the 'video games make people violent' ordeal, there's a term for the inability to tell reality from fiction, it's called mental illness. While I do agree that 90% of yaoi is just plain wrong ( badly written, unhealthy relationships etc) it is most definitely not the reason gay people are harassed.😕
not harassed, but basically every same-sex couple in anime is either shrouded in euphemism or is some sexual forbidden fruit. The depiction of healthy, normal, realistic relationships is just not there. Imagine an anime where all male/female relationships are either platonic or hentai. Even people's parents. Imagine how weird it would look.
+Bailey Stuber exactly. My female friend is one of those 'yaoi fangirls' and wonders why I don't like watching yaoi. It's because all yaoi is the fucking same, and is completely unrealistic. One guy is always the dominant - tall, 'sexy' (imo they all look the same so what's to find sexy about each individual 'seme' character), older, perverted, and one guy is always the submissive - shorter, 'cute' (I think some of the 'ukes' look a bit cute but I can't be attracted to them because they're always so innocent and being toyed with/manipulated by the dominant), younger (often even underage but I guess that's not a big deal for Japan), and clueless. Maybe this is me getting a taste of what 'unprivileged' people have to go through, if you relate it to how lesbians complain that lesbian porn is unrealistic and appeals to straight men more than it does to actual lesbian women. I just want an anime where it's a normal relationship between two guys and there's not some fucked up power dynamic going on in it, or where one person is clearly being manipulated. I don't really watch any anime that are just supposed to be romance/love between two characters so I can only make a comparison to SAO's Kirito/Asuna relationship. They're both the same age, both similar maturity levels, and it's normal love, not just fuelled by perversions of one character. That's why I'd much rather watch an anime like Free if I want to see hot guys and/or any normal-ish representation of gay people in anime. These guys are fucking hot when that's not even meant to be the main focus of the anime, and all of them are unique (at least for this show, I mean the character types of each character have been used in other shows too, e.g. 'the mysterious bad boy' Rin and 'the cuter, shota-like guy' Nagisa) whereas in yaoi they're designed to be sexy but they're just copy/paste models of a taller guy with smaller eyes and a shorter guy with bigger eyes, plus the yaoi anime often just focus on sex or have way too many dirty lines or references to sex and don't show the innocent side to being in love like this anime can sometimes show (not directly, but if you ship two characters you could view intimate friendship scenes between them as a form of showing innocent love representations).
That conversation with kou was something i really needed to hear as a young shipper. I've started viewing gay ships as viable romantic options instead of exciting pieces of media. Gay ships helped me come to terms with my own sexuality, but I don't know how quickly I would have found that out without this episode of 50% off.
Nagisa-"That's my main bitch right there" Rei-"Hello" Nagisa has no chill 😂😂😂 I love Octopimp man 😂😂The rant on gay people and saying "So is Makoto" I'm done
Views are too low? Last few episodes alone are nearing 500K views a piece! its been within 2 hours of upload and the views are at 30K already for this episode! I recognize its not my call to keep making episodes (God help me, this is one of my fav abridged series) and YTs new algorithm might be more than a little screwball. I don't want make this sound like a criticism, because its not. Im just curious the amount of views you were looking for to make a season 2, or is it like Nagisa said and "We're not getting a season 2..." was planned from the beginning.
Comparitively that is VERY low. If you look at the older episodes, they have about 1-2 million views each. They start to drop off hard and end up sitting at around 600-700k. That's a HUGE drop. Unfortunately, now most of the episodes don't even break my subscriber count, which is an indication that interest is waning. I just need to find something else, which is why I started YotR.
Octopimp I recommend more marketing or collabs to try and get your name out their better to try and get viewers cause these long delays inbetween make people forget what they were waiting for
Makes sense, and I do look forward to seeing the awesomeness to come. Also appreciate the feedback (and by appreciate I mean I feel slightly giddy at the fact I got a direct reply...never happened before (IVE BEEN NOTICED SENPAI (does anyone still say that? (How many of these () can I put in one bit))) In any case, looking forward to an amazing series finale and a new series to follow!
not to be a dick here but I think the newer 50% off episodes simply aren't as funny. (Still good, just not as good as the first ones). So maybe with new projects you can utulize your full creativity, be funnier and get more views. (though like I said I don't mind more 50% episodes) #MakeOktopimpGreatAgain
The end of this episode is motivational as fuck. I love it. Can't wait to see the next one! I've watched this from the start and have loved every second of this. I'll be sad to see it go, but I cannot wait to see where you go next, man. Looking forward to it! :D
"Eight hours minimum! Without my beauty sleep I get real ugly real fast!" xD killed me! The fact that with was uploaded on my birthday is even better~!
Still upset that this series didn’t get through the end of season 1. I revisit it every now and then for the surprisingly deep story and characterization, despite it being a comedic abridged version of a show I’ve never seen originally intended to be a joke.
I'm confused as to why you would say that 50% Off doesn't get enough views to warrant making it. Almost everything on the first page of your most popular videos is 50% Off, and what isn't that is Homestuck, which you stopped making a while ago?
temmychan I think they just don't want to make it any more, probably time consuming - which is fine but their reasonings is an excuse to me. I agree with what you say.
The views went from 2 million for the first few episodes, to about 500,000 ~ 600,000 for the more recent episodes. Episode 18 of 50% Off, which was uploaded 5 months ago, only has about 85,000 more views than the Yuri on Ice Prologue video which is only a week old. I love 50% Off, but it seems like a lot of people have just lost interest in it or have forgotten about it by this point, so I don't blame Octopimp for not continuing it at all. Yuri on Ice is just what is more popular now.
After all this time, this is still my all time favorite abridged series. You all work(ed) so hard on it, the pacing, execution, voice acting, & characters are phenomenal. The jokes are hilarious & ACTUALLY funny! Like I genuinely laugh my ass off every episode! The characters never get dry over time, they keep growing & bring up constructive arguments/conversations that real people would. Even though they are fictitious, you can still relate to them on one level or another. I guess I just wanted to say... Thank you. Thank you so damn much for being so original & creating something so fantastic.
This final episode was the perfect place to put the meta commentary. From Nagisa saying "what's the camera even poinetd at?" to all the other self reflexive moments and then the machinations of Haru's mind coming together so perfectly. This is top tier storytelling. You won't find something this good on TV or HBO today.
Kat oh my gosh i forgot that was an actual plot point, like that was supposed to warrant severity and a revelation....It was actaully a rather big one too. Wow....
YEP, one of the biggest plot points was nagisa running from home because of pressures of school and it being resolved almost immediately. Like i was never expecting much but kind of floored me in the long run.
Nagisa dropped the mic, damn. He dropped several mics. That was very expensive sound equipment but he gave the tech crew a lot to think about, so he was forgiven.
it's....it's better then the original anime. you made the characters more likeable and gave human emotions...this is one if not the best series I've ever seen, abridged of not so please, keep it the great work! ♡
"I will hunt you down like a filthy animal! I have studied your habits extensively--" "No-- Haru, you burned your swim trunks-- Makoto is burned! SOO burned You have to save him!!!-" "You're both idiots! He doesn't care about Makoto!"
Damm, just rewatched the series again and I legit feel like I'm about to cry. This series was my childhood, like I never really personally loved free but I loved this abridged and I just wanna say thanks to the creators for doing an amazing job over the years and hopefully you all are happy and thriving doing whatever it is you all are doing now.
There, there. We will get through this. In the wait for season 2, you can watch/ rewatch Free! as well as Haikyuu!! and Love Stage!! The more exclamation marks = the more intense yaoi
Reading the description I got really sad. I'm sad to hear that 50% Off won't be continuing but this series has been so fun to watch. I've loved every second of it. Thank you so much for this series!!
