A21 has turned better batter and daring adventure into the most op perk combo in the game. Traders are the best way to get the literature you actually want. Each one you unlock will have a forge ahead magazine in one of their work stations. As for other magazines, traders can be essential for people who want to level multiple crafting trees at once. They are the most reliable source of filters, which are essential for making dew collectors. They provide workstations before you can craft them. They are a fast source for ammo and building supplies if you didn't manage to loot enough. As for brass... Yes, smelting them does provide more, but that means taking up multiple slots in your inventory and in your forge. I'll gladly give up that bonus to carry only a brass stack, rather than stacks of doorknobs, faucets, candle sticks, and additional scrap. For lead, i find batteries too rare and valuable, considering you can just whack a lead deposit with your pickaxe a few times.
