A cheap shot at Rita Hayworth. She may have had a drink problem but her daughter Yasmine Aga Khan finally put some preasure on her mother to seek help for drinking only to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease which had been misdiagnosed for many years thus giving her the appearance of being a drunk. You didn't mention anything about that!

You need to get the facts straight on Audie Murphy. He never drank. He was prescribed a medication to help him sleep which was very addictive and had severe side effects that could be interpreted as being drunk. It's bad enough to falsely label anyone an alcoholic or drug addict but doubly so when that person is a war hero. You ought to be ashamed of yourself.

Of all these victims of overindulgent lifestyles, Lee Marvin had as much a reason to do so likely more than most. His experiences during WWII, was fraught with any number of reasons to hide within the confines of a bottle. I realize that many soldiers coming home with such trauma found other ways to move on, but there was no counseling offered even remotely close to that of today. Judy Garland was forced by the studio and producers of the Wizard of Oz to take uppers so she work long and grueling hours on set with 3-4 of sleep for which she was given downers to combat the effects of the pills she was forced to take throughout the day. Factoid: Shirley Temple was originally slated for the role of Dorothy. However, when it was discovered she couldn't sing, Garland got the role even though she was thought to be too heavy, resulting in her being given diet pills. Such a sad story, a childhood snuffed out by pure greed and unspeakable cruelty.

Oliver reed once drank 144 bottles of beer in 24hours! Only Andre the Giant could drink more in one session. He lost his life in a drinking game against 5 sailors where he drank 8 imperial pints (so a little over a gallon in total), 12 shots of rum, almost a full bottle of Jack, and some more shots of wodka and Courvoisier before collapsing after an armwrestling match at the age of 61. He should be number one in my book. His interviews were always hilarious as well.

Judy Garland's story is most tragic. While filming The Wizard of Oz, she was constantly forced by executives to keep taking these kinds of pills in order to keep her line. her worst trauma if possible was that the dwarfs in the movie would constantly put their hands up her skirt while pretending that it wasn't them. Judy became so frazzled by this constant sexual harassment, that Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch of the East, viciously complained about how Judy was being treated. Ms. Hamilton who had once been a school teacher was appalled at how Judy was so brutally treated. you can see if you watch The Wizard of oz how traumatized she would become when the little people were around her constantly looking around

I feel bad for Lee Marvin. Sounds like he was very traumatized from his time in the service. Considering he was 63 in 1987, he would have been a very young man during the war. Your brain is still developing until age 25, so I would guess the horrors he witnessed made permanent changes in his mind.

When plunged into such trauma. you either focus on living and rebuilding your life or succomb to the self-destructing patterns from that trauma. The Lee Marvin story makes me think of my Dad who was also a decorated purple hearter Veteran from WW II. After which he rebuilt his life. He used to recite a line from his favorite song 'I'm tired of livin and so scared of dying' What else you can do? There was a line from the Movie the 'Shawshank Redemption'. It goes something like, 'You either get busy living or get busy dying'. I say, 'nurse your wounds and move on.'

I think it was probably quite easy to become an alcoholic in the days of Audy Murphy and the likes. Alcohol was served at every and all functions as well as at home at cocktail hour. Life wasn't as easy as it appears for these actors, singers, and musicians. Not excusing them, just facts of life. They worked very hard to entertain us all and they made mistakes, as we all do. I think that the public often forgets that.

Alcoholism is horrible. When I was 12 years old, I woke up to the sound of our house doorbell ringing and ringing, I figured that it was my parents coming home from the Bar. But it was two San Jose Police Officers. They asked me if I had anyone besides me that was older in age for them to speak to, So I said Yes and went and woke up my 16 year old sister and followed her to the front door. They needed to speak to her alone so I was asked to leave the room. I did just that and returned to my hallway by my bedroom. Only to see my sister heading to me three minutes later to get my 15 year old brother. So she could tell my 15 year old brother that my Father had been killed as my mother drove home from a Bar. My mother spent 3 months in Santa Clara Valley Medical facility. Where they saved her life. There are four of us children that lost our Loving father that horrible day. My 9 year old brother has been in Prison most of his life. He is now living in another County and is finally getting to live his life. TKW
