Could lifestyle changes eliminate the need for long-term blood thinners?
In this episode, we explore this topic via the story of a 50-year-old man who faced a challenging diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and was put on the anticoagulant Eliquis.
Our patient’s story begins with a medical mishap: mistakenly taking two doses that led to severe gastrointestinal issues and an unexpected diagnosis of arrhythmia. During his hospital stay, he was stabilized and prescribed Eliquis. For two years, he wore heart monitors, but no further episodes of atrial fibrillation were detected.
Even though his condition seemed stable, his elevated CHA2DS2-VASc score, factoring in hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, meant he stayed on Eliquis due to the ongoing risk of stroke.
We wanted to explore if lifestyle changes could reduce our patient's risk factors enough to get him off Eliquis. We decided to implement a lifestyle intervention focusing on diet and exercise. We closely monitored his progress through regular follow-ups with the plan to reassess the patient’s stroke risk after lifestyle changes and potentially discontinue Eliquis if risk factors are well-controlled.

I had that horrific misery called "A-Fib" for SIX years! Felt like an earthquake going off in my heart two or three times a week. The only thing that has been even worse than that in my life, was having arthritis in both hips so bad, that it ate them up. I had an ablation and glad I did, to fix my heart. Had both hips replaced with titanium! And glad I did that too! But the thing I am most glad for, is that I gave my heart, soul and my life to Jesus Christ because this body is in the dying process and even if it wasn't TIME IS RUNNING OUT FOR THIS WORLD! Choose LIFE. Choose Jesus. NOW. While you still can, before the horrors come!

Good Evening. What about patients that was given Eloquis for Blood clots that turned into Pulmonary Embolism on two separate occasions 8 yrs apart? That is my situation. I had PE in 2016 and was given zarelto for 6 months. Fast forward to last April I had the surgery to remove multiple clots from my lungs and was given Eloquis and told it was for life.

Sorry to hear that . I think dietary changes by eating more plants based foods than processed false plant foods may help . Whole foods is good especially vegetables green vegetables and berries . Vitamin D with K2 MK7 variant and magnesium. Extra virgin olive oil from once source in dark glass. 100 percent cacao powder ( tested for heavy metals) Physically activity with your doctor permission of course with what you can do .

I wish someone would address mutations of their prothromban gene (factors 1-5) I have #2 5 is most common, therefore I had DVT in my left leg first, 2nd in my right after I went off anticoagulants. I am over 60 and am back on Xarelto low dose.

I have been dealing with this for twenty years, and I want to be healed from it. Currently, I only take a daily baby aspirin, and my afib is managed with medication. However, I wish I didn't have to deal with it at all.

I suggest you research CX8 by Xtend life and look into eating whole foods green vegetables, berries nuts and seeds . Extra virgin olive oil from one source like country In dark glass not plastic. 100 percent cacao dark chocolate powder ( tested for heavy metals like that of Bryan Johnson) At least 4000IU of vitamin D with K2 MK7 variant and magnesium. CX 8 already has vitamin K2 and but vitamin D and other heart meds. For blood flow they have VasqFlow which naturally improves blood flow and reduces blood pressure. Something worthy researching and checking with your doctor if tired of meds . Best wishes

Thank you Dr. Montgomery! ❤You give me hope that someday soon I will be off of my small dose of Lopressor 6.25mg daily. I believe my A-FIB Dx 1 year ago was exercise induced. I work out more cautiously now as I age but forget sometimes that I'm no longer in my 20's, haha. 💃💃💃👠👠👠

I have had blood pressure spikes since 2022, which has affected my heart, the spikes are mostly at night when I'm most in need of rest. I just spent 3 days in hospital in which they ran all the test and could not come up any reason for this to be happening. Frankly this happen because of long covid. I got the disease a year earlier.

Two months ago, I had a blockage in my wire stent, and they had to install a drug induced stent. They said I would be on blood thinner and baby aspirin for the rest of my life

From whence comes the term 'blood thinner'?? These meds don't change the viscosity of the blood.,,only interrupt the clotting sequence.

Greetings Dr Montgomery, I was diagnosed with P.E. February 1 2024, I had previously went to the E.R. asking For a Doppler ultrasound and was refused, I was told it was a pulled muscle.. I found you on RU-vid a couple of weeks ago. I only take Eliquis at this time. I want a second opinion about taking this medicine for the long term, and are there any other alternatives? Please help.
