Some say the music was unforgettable - but the Texas heat, lack of water and people jammed together like sardines made it unforgettable, too.

It was advertised as “ZZ Top’s First Annual Bar-B-Q and Barn Dance”. We arrived at 11am and were told the BBQ was already gone! Actually there probably never was any. It was very hot and many people were overcome by it and needed medical assistance. I stood in line for almost two hours at a concession stand to get a Coke. The lineup of bands was incredible. Although it wasn’t mentioned I’m pretty sure Joe Cocker and Leon Russell also played. Definitely an experience not to be forgotten.

Saw ZZ Top play the Cow Palace back in the '70s. Got there way early and sat in line. Was noticing that the line seemed awfully long. Turns out the idiots had oversold the tickets. The organizers walked down the line, did a rough count and told the people past that point in the line that they weren't going to be allowed in. That's when the bottles started flying. Full on melee. They hustled the rest of us inside and we got a great show.

Isn't the "lack of water & food" thing a bit overblown? I attended dozens of these shows in the 70s and 80s and, as I recall, it was all about the tunes and partying and we didn't care a bit about food or water...in fact, such things never even crossed our minds. You did what you had to do in the parking lot before the show and then just went in and dug it. Of course, back then no one carried water around in little containers like they were crossing the Sahara, either....

Sometime during the mid 80's, I went to see ZZ Top with Joan Jett at the Austin convention center...it was boring. Concerns aren't tough nowadays neither are most people. Almost everything seems like a farce. How do you determine how tough seniors were in 74? I don't associate with many folks anymore, especially seniors. That ZZ Top Concert in 74 was tough. Has everyone noticed that rock is dead and today only lame imitations remain? No nostalgia or crying over times long gone, but as culture changed and the political landscape mutated several times rock music lost appeal. I'm 54 and the last concerts I can remember worthy of attending were around 1998. Since then, downhill in every regard as bands got older and no replacement showed up. Glad to have been there though.

I was at that day long "First (and only) Annual ZZ Top Barn Dance and Barbeque" as well, sitting on the turf at about the 40 yard line, stage side. Indeed, it was blistering hot that day, and there were few if any concession stands, and the restrooms seemed to be a hundred miles away when they were desperately needed. I concur with the two gentleman interviewees when they say the music and camaraderie of the crowd made the suffering under the late summer sun totally worthwhile. Afterward, every convenience store in Austin was descended upon by profoundly parched and hungry concert goers. It is a memory I too will never forget.

Similar story at Texas Stadium for the Texxas World Music Festival in 1979. The facilities staff hooked up firehoses and started spraying everyone on the field with water to help cool everyone down. It felt wonderful. Then after the sun went down and Heart had finished playing, the full moon rose behind the stage and Boston came out and blew us all away. (And we were already blown away by Sammy Hagar, Nazareth, BOC, Van Halen, and Heart.) If I recall correctly, the tickets were $35.
