RIVERSIDE - Just after 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2024, firefighters from Riverside Fire Department responded to the area of Mary Street and Hawarden Drive In the Alessandro Heights neighborhood for a reported vegetation fire. Initial reports were that it was started by 3 people who were seen lighting fireworks and then running away. When units arrived, they found a vegetation fire that was quickly growing. Multiple other resources were ordered for immediate structure threat and evacuation orders were placed. At least three homes were destroyed, four others sustained damage, and around 1,500 others evacuated according to Riverside Fire Department Deputy Chief Steve McKinster. The evacuated area included Eagle Crest Court and Chartwell Drive, Horace Street and Hawarden Drive, Golden Hills and in the area of Barry Road and Via Vista moving towards Trautwein Road and Alessandro Boulevard. An evacuation center was established at the Orange Terrace Community Center at 20010 Orange Terrace Parkway. Air drops were conducted by two tankers and one helicopter, officials said. Riverside city fire units were assisted by units from Riverside County, San Bernardino and Orange counties and Hemet and area reservations for water. No other details are available, but will be provided as they are released.

Wow! Your coverage of this fire is comprehensive and demonstates the magnitude of what happens & how dangerous fireworks can be, assuming this is the actual cause, as was stated on the news. Your footage was used on L.A. news stations, so congradulations for that. It's tragic that homes were lost due to the irresponsible choices made yesterday by those who shot off fireworks in the heat and brush. Your video also shows just how hard the fire personnel work to save structures both on the ground and in the air. Thank you to all first responders who make their living in the fire fighting industry serving others under dangerous conditions. And you are pretty brave yourself for filming this. It was hot & smokey.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. The first responders are hero's for sure. These men and women constantly put themselves in harms way for us. I agree about the fireworks, I personally just don't understand why someone would risk a situation like this over a firework. Thank you again, I appreciate your support.

So upsetting. Our neighbor across the street had the nerve to argue with us on the 4th of July because him and his family were lighting off fireworks and they were landing on our property. I hope he sees this and comes to his senses. I'm so disgusted with humanity

Yes, because 3 people lighting fireworks and running away is the same as responsible people using fireworks. Second, riverside has burned before. Really bad in the past. Maybe doing preventative measures would be a better idea. Especially with matchbox construction of houses. It could have been anything to spark this and it would have been the same result.

Beautiful homes. If I ever have the money to live in a home like that, I’ll make sure to dig two huge holes, with large 1,000 gallon water tanks, and a gnarly hose set up, better yet huge sprinklers.

Look man, the Aboriginal Americans had names for these places, like "Whoosh Valley" and "Hill Of Black Smoke". And they _never_ built their homes in these areas. But rich people move in and "see the view", and don't give the slightest thought to how things are going to go *WHEN* the land catches fire. Not if it catches fire, *WHEN* it catches fire. Nobody has their own hydrant adapters? Nobody has their own fire hoses, nozzles or pumps? Come on, man. If you're going to live in fire country, you need to take some basic responsibility and not only be prepared, but you need to know HOW to use your equipment. Calling the fire department is the right thing to do, but they aren't enough anymore. *YOU* have to *HELP!* Keep your property clean, keep the boundaries cut, don't allow debris to build up. Have proper, high-volume hoses, nozzles and hydrant adapters on hand, so you don't block the fire department's equipment when they arrive. Coordinate with your neighbors. Train with your gear. Heck, have a block party where you all take part in dragging the gear out and getting it set up! You spent 2 million dollars on this home, at least spend another $500 on a wildfire hose kit from Amazon.

Years back there was a disastrous fire in the hills of Oakland. Many houses burned, the fire was extremely hot due to all the eucalyptus overgrowth. Following the fire, a special fire zone was created for the area, with property taxes paying for inspectors to survey and require clearing. All was fine for the five years the ordinance was in effect, but as soon as it ended the fools let things go wild again. Now, it's just as bad, or worse than it was. People are idiots.

Incredible footage! So sorry to see so much loss. My brother lost a house to a brush fire in 04 , Del Rosa/SB. And I’ve lost a house to a flood 08 Index WA . We feel your pain. My prayers that all lives were saved. That’s truly all that matters. Sad to say, but everything else can be replaced.🙏

😮😢 just to set a few things straight; the word was "someone thought they saw fireworks" and then "people were seen fleeing (or evacuating) the area".... looked like a lot of people, 1500 households were made to flee the area. no one was noted as claiming to have heard or even smelled lit fireworks, nor did anyone see any person lighting fireworks off....typical Cali mysterios fire, and it has been hellaciously hot!

Embarrassing 2-1/2” hose lay from the back step! Why does this fire department flat load all of their 2-1/2” hose forcing firefighters to pull and peel hose from the tail board at approximately 12 foot intervals???!!! There is such a thing as Horse shoe load so 2 firefighters can drop 200 feet of hose on the street in 2 motions from the tailboard to the pavement. All that pulling by multiple firefighters from the back step is not only a time waster, it also robs firefighters of much needed energy to fight the fire. These are poorly trained firefighters and I blame their Fire Chief for not having a respectable hose load on his pumpers. Chief Hughes Battalion 1 (retired) Chicago FD

Water alone does not save houses. You need foam to smother the fire. Just spray slime instead of water and the result maybe different. Footage was great. There is a lot of action in the boots. Sorry, for the houses and home lost. People invest in their home and puff go their houses in a day. Scary, if you happen to be there and sad if you are not there, but later found out it. Little garden hose just slow the fire down. You need more air tankers. The bigger the house the bigger the tender box.
