I decluttered my 5 y/os bedroom over Christmas break. We went through her toys one by one (even all the tiniest Barbie accessories etc). She kept a couple of babies and 2 Barbies and a handful of accessories. The rest was thrown or donated. I was shocked she was willing to get rid of so much. BUT, immediate success. The next morning she played alone contentedly for hours!! She hasn't done that in ages, because I think all the stuff was so overwhelming!! Thank you for sharing so much wisdom!

I actually made a treasure bin for my hubby - a bunch of random crap that I didn’t know what to do with but he doesn’t want me to chuck out - now when he’s looking for it I know where it all is, instead of random places - he’s satisfied knowing I didn’t chuck it, and I am satisfied because it’s all contained in one place 😊

Yes! I just got married a year ago to a man who...likes a lot of stuff. I bought several smallish totes as memory bins. He really appreciated it! He wanted the things from grandparents and childhood but truely didn't know what to do with the stufd. I don't care if it is multiple totes, as long as it isn't in piles on the floor!

I use shampoo diluted with water 50-50 on grimy collars and cuffs - it’s designed to tackle body oil and dirt. I repurpose an old dishwashing bottle with squeeze top, fill with shampoo solution and apply to shirt collar, scrub with nail brush, leave for 10 minutes then wash. I also have used shampoo and body wash to clean my hairbrushes and makeup brushes. I like to repurpose things instead of throwing out partially used products. Saves money, the environment and lessens guilt. “Using is slow decluttering”.

I'm a declutter freak but I wasn't always this way. We built our current home 5 years ago and we had to pack up the old one. The accumulation of 20 years of things when my kids were growing up and I was too busy to focus on it was astounding. Astounding. But I think the thing that hit me the hardest was the baby and toddler clothes that I had set aside for 'someday-grandbabies'. When my husband pulled the boxes from the attic, I was horrified at the condition of the clothes - the clean and carefully folded things had stains reappear, had yellowed, had elastic that was no longer functioning and the clothes were all over just groovy and nobody would put a child in them. I had hoarded these clothes instead of passing them on and now nobody could get a second use with them. That upset me s much. Now I use it, when it's utility is gone for me, off it goes to a new owner.

Yep, I'm 63, no kids, so I'm passing things on to people who can use them NOW, rather than have them have to trudge through rooms and rooms of things after I'm gone. Things like food, fine, that's easy, but if I have something I'm no longer interested in, off it goes. I run it past them first, and if not, donated elsewhere or tossed in the trash.

Most of my son's baby clothes were given away. I sealed his "coming home" outfit in a zipper bag in my top bureau drawer. I showed his fiancee, and their son also wore it home from the hospital (1.5 lbs heavier!). Oh wait, I'd also bagged his Batman pjs - with detachable cape (velcro) - as a memory item, and left them in HIS top drawer. One day, I spotted my grandson wearing them in a video they sent! He loves them as much as his Dada did, and Dad enjoyed passing them along.❤

Hi Dawn, I owned and baked for our restaurant for 13 years. We made over 100 loaves of homemade bread each week. White, wheat, Rye and raisin. In order to keep the bread fresh after baking we would let it cool & slice them and immediately put them in bread bags & into the freezer. So I thought for your sourdough you could do the same! When you need bread for toast or a sandwich you just pull out the amount of slices needed. Homemade bread has no preservatives to keep it from molding and no bread softener to keep it soft! It’s so much healthier for us! The freezer keeps it fresh for weeks but we always went through it quickly. ❤️

When my kids were little I used the over the door shoe holders that had the mesh (breathable) pockets. Each kid got a row that was theirs. Their winter hat went in 1 pocket, pair of gloves in 1 pocket, etc The top rows were for myself and my husband. When my husband came home from work he threw his sunglasses and wallet in a pocket in his row. It kept everyone from having an extreme amount of hats or gloves and they were always put away because it was easy to do and easy to find. It was the best system I ever put in place!

They can break on super solid flooring and if they are old. My mom had them for years and then suddenly one day one shattered and it was scary how tiny the shards were. Dawn, I 've gotten so much from your channel since finding it last year - thank you! I'm no poet, but a couple days ago this came to me and I wanted to share: Clutter I can't move, Not freely, like dancing through the world. I can't see, Not clearly, without fog to obscure. I can't hear, Not thoughts of new possibility. I can't grow. I am touching this container's walls. This space constrains. There is too much. Too much and too little. My things, they... MY things? No. Possession is a false concept, is it not? THE things around me In this house I occupy... They block my path, make me reach around to what is needed. They block my view, So that all I see Is what I can't use. They yell at me: Demanding action, Taunting, laying blame. They keep me small, Focused on what's here. Not on what could be. I will clear this space, Bring in air that's fresh, And begin to dance. -Jodi Callahan

Another good one Dawn. I believe you said a key word in this one: Always. We are "always" decluttering, minimizing, trashing, re-organizing, and just tidying up generally. We "always" will be and it's a different mind-set once you realize that the everyday or every week tidy will never be done. But it gets soooo much easier with less to tidy. Keep going girl!

Dawn, you are so right about books! This is coming from a woman who has several thousand of them. :) If you read every day, and you have the space to actually have your books organized and accessible on shelves- great! I have a dedicated library room and it gets used constantly, and I thoroughly enjoy maintaining it . But if you don't have time to read them, or the space to keep them, forget it! I totally support you getting rid of those crates of books you weren't accessing- books don't belong under the bed. A nice clean under bed space is going to feel great- it's hard to vacuum around crates. ❤️

I'm an avid book reader but unfortunately my vision is getting bad (even with glasses) so I've resolved myself to read mostly from an e-reader as I can enlarge the text and change the font to my preference. I do love the look of books on a shelf though so I sorted through my hundreds and hundreds of books and slowly donated 90% of them and only kept my absolute favourites and the ones I've had and read over and over since I was a kid/teen and have them proudly displayed in my bedroom in cube shelves. It was honestly so hard to get rid of them, but since they're no longer being used by myself, I had to let them go.

@@catlady9123 that was smart- and having the remaining sentimental ones displayed nicely is so great, they are serving the purpose of decoration and reminding you of fond memories. I have a tip for more volume or visual thickening of ones hair. Without buying extra products. Changing the parting of your hair once in a while. The parting thins the hair a bit over time, so changing it up makes it look like your hair is thicker. Another tip is for when blowdrying in particular the front and great for fringes too; first take the lower layers, the ones close to your head, blowdry them outwards away from head, then take the toplayer and do the opposite. Best done with a roundbrush. It will create a little eyeshaped pocket of air between the layers. I suffer from alopecia areata, so i've experimented a ton with ways to hide the bald spots and compensate for the loss of volume. Hope this is usefull for anyone.

True confession: I moved in a hurry and the pots and pans got packed in boxes I didn't now where. I bought two new ones, to use "in the meantime." Three years later, decluttering the garage, we happened upon a TON of pans. They got donated. I only missed ONE of them, which I kept. I didn't need most of them, which leaves me wondering, how much else don't I need. A LOT!

Something similar happened to me, we didn't move, but packed our kitchen up for a full remodel 3 years ago and somehow 1 box got misplaced and ended up in our storage shed behind other things. I found it again last summer and the only thing inside I had replaced was my favourite ceramic bread pans, but my replacements were a cheap aluminium so as soon as I got my hands on my good ones, the cheap ones went to the thrift store along with the rest of the box that had nothing else that I missed in it and honestly, I couldn't even tell you what else was in there because it was so insignificant.

Had to tell you - we’ve been on a 2+ year journey following your channel and regularly decluttering. Last week I placed a quarantine tub in the hallway & mentioned it to my 9 year old. She announced yesterday that she & her 7 year old sister were going to go through their toys this weekend (they share a bedroom) AND THEY DID TODAY!!! They filled 2 bins joyfully & on their own. I am so delighted & shocked too. They were so happy in their room afterwards. Thank you for all of your suggestions and time in filming. It’s so neat to see this fruit of hard work and patterns over the last years.

As I've been decluttering the last few days, every time I see something that I think I could use, I say to myself "Everybody's so creative!" It's really helped me to get rid of those little things that would trip me up in the past. Yes, I can find many uses for random things, but it's time to let go. My mantra is: Put it away, give it away, or throw it away. For right now, those are the only choices.

We did the same thing with one place setting per person. We got the corral dishes in plain white, and then I took a marker made for ceramics and I wrote each person's name on the outside. I ended up putting people's names on them because people kept saying that they washed their dish when they didn't. So now we know who didn't wash their dish. 😂 I also have a set of dishes put away if we have guests, but we usually use disposable paper plates when we have guests. This has been a total game changer for our family at five.

Dawn, I've been working on getting through the decluttering onion and STILL had a good laugh yesterday. My five year old and I found a pile of scattered cards for a game we've NEVER played. We've had the cards for years. We've moved the cards THREE TIMES. It was a classic case of fantasy self. Every time I saw the cards I felt guilty that I wasn't playing more card games... so we finally said goodbye to them!

Mice get in usually around either pipes (stuff steel wool to block them)or under a door(carefully stick heavy duty door draft strip to block them there, reinforce with a couple of nails). They can get in through surprisingly small openings but can be blocked from entry if you figure where they are getting in.

We have a new garage getting done taking way too long but mice were in our garage when it got demolished they moved into the house. They got into everything and it nearly caused me a nervous breakdown. I have too much stuff in my laundry and atm can’t get in there but I am clean so they got into my pantry. Lucky I had mostly Tupperware containers but I had to clean everything with bleach. My husband wanted me to clean out the corner cupboard as door isn’t shutting (he broke it in a anger fit it’s not that it’s not shutting from the stuff) I saw some mouse Poo in there so I must have missed this cupboard. I can’t bring myself to do it any tips from anyone how I can start this

Wear a mask and gloves when dealing with it. Be sure you find out how they are getting in and block them or you will have reoccurring mice and they will get into more than your kitchen-they ate my photos in the top drawer of my dresser! It turned out thet were getting i n through a small gap under the door to the basement as well as around a pipe under our sink! Look for any cracks inside your cabinets where they could be coming in from in the walls too. Use those draft strips or a board on the bottom of any door they might be coming in. Shove steel wool around pipes as they hate chewing on it. Seal any cracks. These are the cruelty free, non toxic measures, but there are various other things available depending on what is happening. aIn the meantime, you are smart to keep foods in lidded tubs, also other things that need to be kept clean while you try to get the mice out. If your husband has an anger issue with the corner cabinet I would empty it out and not use it at all. Especially if the door is broken, and it is easy for mice to get in and hard for you to use anyway.

You have a lovely home Dawn. One thing you have shown on this Channel truly is Kids do not need a huge room , it is about inventory . Also you have shown that kids do not need tons of stuff. Your kids have plenty but as you have said kids only play with a certain portion of things anyway. It starts with us as parents realizing they do not have to have everything they want or have a tons of toys. They can make wonderful memories by playing outside , of course when the weather is nice. Also using their imaginations. In society today somehow we are fed this idea we have to have big big homes to hold all our junk that many times we are not even using. I am one too that sees no point in storing stuff or saving a bunch of stuff. many times as we get older our kids really do not want a lot of our stuff or their taste may be different. So it makes sense to just keep what we like and use and let the rest go. I mean honestly the world produces way to much stuff and if we give somewhere away and later need it we normally can find something again used or a good price. So thank you for all you share on your channel it does help.

Dawn, I'm so happy you mentioned mice in the winter. We live in suburban NH and get mice every winter as well. There was one year that we noticed they were getting into our cabinets which was a real pain. However, we solved that problem by wrapping all of the water or drain pipes coming into the cabinets with steel wool. We have even wrapped all of the heating pipes (we have forced hot water) on all floors so that they can't follow that pipe up. We no longer have any getting through from the basement. They don't like steel wool and have found it to be a great barrier between the main floor living space and the basement which is where they are getting in.

Because of the mice, I would suggest putting items into glass jars or metal tins as soon as you bring the food home. The food doesn't cause the mice problem, but you want to keep the mice away from any of your food. Mice and Rats can chew through plastic.

One in use and a spare….I use this for things I buy as a single item (eg. toothpaste, ketchup). When you start to use the spare, add it to the shopping list. Training is required for getting family members to understand the concept! Also they need to understand that if they add the item to the shopping list it doesn’t get replaced immediately, waiting is required for the weekly shop to be done. Love everything you inspire. Happy New Year.

Just to note, the space you’re keeping your casserole dishes is the warming drawer for most people. It is used to keep prepared foods warm while you finish cooking other items (think Thanksgiving and Christmas) or to keep a plate of food warm for up to an hour. You can even use it to proof your dough. If you have controls/knobs stating “warming drawer” (or more recently “broiler”), do not store anything in it.

I’ve been grudgingly working through a huge size of laundry detergent that isn’t as “new and improved” as it claimed. I’m not sure it saved me any money when I need to pretreat a stain I didn’t need to before. Also the extra or larger containers need to be stored somewhere. I think we could get rid of one whole storage cabinet in our basement if we just bought the regular size of things.

Dawn, Great advice as per usual for the New Year’s reset. I like how you reiterate things like the ‘Container concept’ , ‘Time Will Tell’ and ‘Memory’ bins, the ‘4 Burner Cooker concept’ and keeping work surfaces clutter free. Also setting limits for clothing, products, games, craft supplies, toys and extra storage tote bins. I think going around the house thinking of inventory items as “taking up real estate” to have to manage, dust and clean is useful; as is the idea of valuing free space and restful quiet places in our homes.

Ive been following you on youtube for about a year now. Last week i watched all the reset videos and have been on a major new years purge! We are a family that loves to have collections of books and of music and movies. What I love and am most surprised by in following you is that even though I'm not aiming for minimalism entirely, the way you talk through the process of decluttering is super helpful and always kind and gives me daily reminders of ways that i can help simplify our home so that we have more time for each other and the things we love to enjoy together! Thank you for all the time and love you put into helping us!

Also...I'm so glad you showed your storage space in this video! It's easy to forget that you do have that space for overstock when all we see frequently is the living space. My home doesn't have a storage basement or very much bathroom storage, so it's something I have to remind myself of when I see such empty cabinets in the videos of minimalist homes.

I just cleaned and declutter one of my kid’s rooms and you are right! When you do that, they play in their room way more.

We went from super minimalist(and I loved it!!) to a house overflowing and a mom drowing in stuff again in 3 year. Moved countries and into a house about 3 times the size of our previous one. So I set out making it 'homey' 😭. Now I'm pregnant with #5 and I HAVE TO GET STUFF OUT before this baby is born, otherwise I might just loose my mind. Wish me luck. Thankfully I still love decluttering, just haven't kept up as I should have. 😎

Reject shampoos I add to liquid laundry soap bottles. Even if they smell, they rinse out well.

You mentioned stain fighters in the laundry room. I only have 2 kinds, and they work. I have a tub of oxiclean that's good for certain kinds of things, but my almost daily used, tried and true is the spray bottle of triple action shout, a scrub brush and the economy refill size shout. I didn't read the directions until a couple of years ago. It's amazing how well it works when I follow directions, lol! There have been many clothes I had thought were hopelessly doomed as rags, and stains that even went through the dryer that did ok after good old shout.

Love this so much! I cleared out 3 Corningware baking dishes that I received as a wedding gift over 19 years ago! I also cleared out 2 mini loaf pans that have never been used!! Thank you so much for the motivation as always!!! ❤

Hi ! You are an inspiration. Yesterday as I was getting ready to leave to go out I was pulling on my winter boots when I noticed a huge hole in my sock so I went back to my drawer for another pair. As I unrolled that pair I spied another hole in that heel. My husband was laughing at my dismay! What the heck happened in my sock drawer. I hadn’t gone through them in ages . Fortunately I had new pairs for Christmas so I put all the others on my bed to make sure I went through them. It’s winter so we all take our boots off when we go to someone’s home!

I’m glad she gave me permission to just throw things away. I’m 74 and it was a game changer 0:05 for me to pare down to essentials. One comment from a thrift store employee about not giving them stained or chipped things because it cost them money to throw it out was helpful also.
