Now its memories of dying in a minute lol. Trying to fly a Yer-2 in arcade these days all the fighters are just like: Mine. Mine. Mine.

Lancasters were completely fine with blockbusters. (4000-12,000 lbs bombs). It was the 24,000 lbs GrandSlam they needed modification for. And the bouncing bomb (though not for weight, just aiming and stuff). Lancasters standard capacity was about 18,000 lbs.

As well as defensive armaments- the b-29 flew a few missions with just tail gunners so as to get maximum bombing weight capacity

@@uisce_ ahhh yeah it's fine. Britain had lots of other names for specific groups of bombs. Tall boy and grand slam were the earthquake bombs for instance. The blockbusters were actually named because they remove the roofs from entire blocks of houses allowing the incendaries to then fall onto the wooden flooring

Years ago I used to air spawn with max bomb load on the Yer but if I made it back I’d reload with just the 50kg. Some maps like the Berlin map of that time for Soviets was just a short fighter dirt strip so holding brakes was a must.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm just a humble mechanical engineer, not an aerospace specialist or anything, but surely diesels would be at a disadvantage for aircraft? In my way of thinking surely horsepower would be more important than torque alone, as the engine only has to turn a propeller and not pull the aircraft or apply any mechanical force through gearing or linkages or anything. Just a straight shaft to the propeller on 1:1. So it just needs to have enough torque to turn the prop, which is only facing air resistance and will only weigh a couple hundred kg, maybe a tonne at most on larger aircraft? The plane derives its thrust from the rate at which the prop can turn which correlates more closely to the horsepower (rate of torque) than the torque itself, right? I mean big torque will help get the props spinning from a standstill faster but the pilot will be waiting for max thrust for takeoff anyway so it'll only really make a difference in responsiveness when taxiing. For takeoff and flight you're gonna want max thrust for which you're gonna want to maintain the highest possible prop speed for which you need big horsepower. And diesels don't rev that high and they're less efficient in low-oxygen environments if I'm not mistaken so why would anyone make a diesel aero engine? Maybe I'm being dumb and missing something here. Just my thoughts on it anyway, don't take my word for any kind of expert opinion.

@@marmite8959 I'm guessing they used diesel engines on aircrafts in 1930s for several reasons: -they're potentially safer (no electrical problems, fuel isn't volatile), -diesel is easier to refine/cheaper, -they already have big, powerful diesel engines and know-how to work with them. They moved away from diesel aircraft in later years, so these advantages weren't enough, clearly.
