There are different types of LED strips all around. There are different variations, colors, and most important of all, sizes. Here at SIRS-E we carry 2 main sizes of LED strip chips. We have the 5050 size LEDs and the 3528.
The numbers you hear are a shortcut to the actual size. i.e. 5050 means 5.0 mm by 5.0 mm, and the 3528 means 3.5mm by 2.8mm. The Lumen output varies according to LED chip size; although the beam angle is the same for both at 120 degrees, the 3528 and 5050 strips can be similar in brightness.
This is due to the amount of LEDs in within the 16.4 feet the strips come in. The Dual Density 3528 strips have 120 LEDs per meter as opposed to the 5050 Dual Density strips which have 60 LEDs per meter. The main benefit in the 3528 LED strips is that they are a little over 1/4 of an inch, as opposed to the 5050 strips which are about ½ inch.
The 5050 LED strips is still a bit brighter than the 3528 strip counterpart, but if you do not have the room for the 5050, the 3528 is perfect for the job.

looking from afar, you can see the individual leds of the 5050. while the smaller strip with closer led placement looks like a light tube. I prefer the light tube look

Hi, thanks for explaining the differences. I had a question about mounting the larger 5050's directly to something like wood. Is the heat output such that you would need an aluminum mounting track?

you wouldn't necessarily need the track, the heat output is not that much to affect the wood.

Hello! I would want to know if I can cut the "LED STRIP" in small pieces (cutting on correct points, of course) and soldering the wires (red and black) between them. I want to illuminate some parts and have a gap without illumination, and again a illumination point, and other gap and so on. There is any problem?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hi, Rodrigo Caldas ! Yes of course, you can cut the strips into segments. The beauty of LED Light Strips is their versatility. Like you said, be sure to cut only on the designated points of the strip.
@JKLauderdale
@JKLauderdale 9 лет назад
You'll want to have a fine tip on your soldering iron, pre-tin the wire and copper tabs. Then it's just a matter of using a soft weight on the strip to keep it in place. Nothing hard or too heavy that may kink a resistor or diode loose. I use a gel-handled pair of pliers

In order to achieve chasing patterns you will either require pixel by pixel controlled strips, or the strips that are pre programmed, these are standard LED strips which means they are controlled all together, here is a link to our Direct DMX pixel by pixel controlled LED strips. sirs-e.com/product-category/led-lighting/dmx-rgb-led-strip/

SIRS Electronics Inc hi there. i bought this 5M/16Ft 5050 RGB 300 LED LED Strip www.ebay.com/itm/391044936635. I wasn't too happy with it's brightness. I wanted the brightest RGB strip i could find and could only find the 5050. I've used it for a few days but i'm not impressed with it's brightness. I checked online and found out that if i powered it on both ends with the same cheap power adapters it came with i could get a little extra brightness off it. I bought 2 LED strips so i'm now using 2 power adapters on one strip. It looks a little bit acceptable or closer to what I wanted. i found out from this discussion electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/19413/why-doesnt-my-5050-led-strip-draw-as-much-power-as-i-expect that there is some power lost in the cable. My question is is it safe to use a 16V 4.5A (72W) laptop adapter to power the 5050 RG LED strip? What's the difference btwn powering one 5M 5050 LED strip with a 12V 6A power adapter vs 16V 4.5A power adapter? They are both 72watts, aren't they? Or should i step up to 5630, 7020 or 8020? I'm looking to light up a store window display.
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hello Sir Jay, thank you for watching our video and for your question. Unfortunately a 16V power adapter will not work because your LED strip is rated for 12V, even if they have the same wattage. Visit our website at www.sirs-e.com and take a look at our high-quality LED strips and power sources, including our new line of battery packs.

+Sir Jay This using two different adaptors at either end of a strip is not a good Idea as the PSU are fighting each other and unless they are designed to work in parallel can cause a problem as in early failure, overheating or fire.

ended up doing it serially. Good food for thought there though. I really should know more about psu's and how that interaction occurs. Thanks Derek.

+Nothing Less, This is not are area of expertise, but I am assuming you want the option that produces the most light which would mean that you are going to want the 5050 double density waterproof option. The benefit that LED's can also offer is the ability to offer more lighting without the addition heat. This means you can have more lighting directly applied to your plants. I just brought a 3528 led strip and 4 CR2025 lithium sony battery. I am wondering if i could power up my led strip with these 4 batteries? My circuits knowledge are bad.
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hello Nishimoto Mitsukuni, the 3528 LED strip uses 12V DC to power up and depending on the density and color it consumes different power wattage. The CR2025 batteries you have are 3V and theoretically 4 batteries in series will give you 12V, but the capacity is nowhere near sufficient to power up the strip; it will turn on for very little time. I would suggest our high quality Lithium Polymer battery packs which come in different capacities and are specifically made to run any LED applications for several hours. Check out one of our videos on this topic here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-k-rlqBOP7b0A.htmlnd you can find LIPO batteries for LED Strips sirs-e.com/product-category/led-lighting/led-strip-batteries/ If you have additional questions feel free to email us at contact@sirs-e.com

Nice job explaining the difference. I need to run 63' or 20 meters of warm white LED ribbon lights around my deck hand rail. Is there a way to do this by linking the strips together and only having one power source (at one end)? If not what would you suggest?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hello Cheryl SeaAngel, thank you for watching our video and for your comment. It is technically possible to have 4 LED strips (20 Meters) with one power source but your power source will not be at the end, rather between 2 strips. This will work for some single density strips. It is not a simple answer but you have many factors to consider such as density, LED strip type (5050/3528), and Waterproof Rating.
@cherylseaangel153

SIRS Electronics Inc Thank You very much for your response. I don't want the lights to be bright and over powering, I assume I would want warm white 3528 strips. The position of the only 110 outlet on my balcony/deck is at one end and the balcony/deck is 30' or more off the ground. We are in a Ski Resort at 8k feet above sea level with very cold winters. Would I need to run an outdoor extension cord to the center point?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hi Cheryl SeaAngel, an extension cord can work. Due to your weather conditions I would recommend you use strips that are IP68. This is because, unlike IP67, IP68 can protect your strips against moisture and condensation. Here's a test we did so you can see how water can affect your LED Strip ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nGpmyvow9R8.html

Sections of the lights in the middle are not working and I want to replace it with LED's. In doing my research 120v LED strips would give me the length I need but with cut intervals of approx 3 feet won't work when I need to change from one color to another. 12v LED strips give me the cut lengths I need. Each of the listings say I can't go to the length I need. If I use a 12 watt power supply how long can go with 12v strips?

Hi +Ej Peterson, thanks for watching our video and for your comment. You can connect them in series or in parallel, but you might experience voltage drop. Make sure you watch your power consumption and calculate the wattage of your power supply first.

The length is the same, the size of the LED is different.

Hi, I have a 5050 rgb led strip and I only use 1 meter long...my question is which power supply should I use for only 1 meter long, is it 12v 1a or 12v 5a? Which is better?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hello +fish808, thank you for your question and for taking the time to watch our video. A 12v 1 Amp strip should work, but I cannot be sure because I do not know the specs of your strip. Just go with the 5A to be safe.
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Mr100duke, actually some strips can consume up to 1 amp per meter, it all depends on the strip.

SIRS Electronics Inc sory for my really late reply, but im using right now the 5a for only 1meter long, and there is no problem yet, my strip still working fine, its 2 months now, ....but anyaway thanks for the respond :)

what does mean the DD and SD?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
+Edgel Mendoza , SD stands for Single Density and DD stands for Double Density. The density refers to how many LEDs per meter the strip has. The 5050 LED strips have a Single Density of 30 LEDs per meter and a Double Density of 60 LEDs per meter. The 3528 LED strips have a Single Density of 60 LEDs per meter and a Double Density of 120 LEDs per meter.

What is dual density?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 7 лет назад
Hello, dual density is referring to the amount of LED's per m on the LED strip, our double density is 60 LED per m while our single density is 30 LED per m.

so? can these led strips run 1000 watss?? if so how?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 8 лет назад
+Ruiz Sage If you are talking about using a 1000 Watt power supply, sure thing, but do not forget that regardless of the power supply, due to voltage drop you are still looking at a limited LED run depending on a specific LED strips density. If you got a project that you want to run by us, please reach out @ sirs-e.com/contact-us/

Can i connect with wire and soldering: 1m of an smd 3528 (7.2 watt/m) led strip to 1m of an smd5050 strip (again 7.2 watt/m) ??
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hello valia chasapi, thank you for watching our video and for your question. Before you get into soldering LED strips we would like to recommend for you to consult a licensed electrician to make sure you get everything soldered and connected correctly. Now, you can solder a 3528 LED strip and a 5050 LED strip as long as they're both single color only. If you need information about Power Consumption watch our video on how to Find the Power Consumption of Any LED Strip ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WZZ6ZlAFPls.html

so which one makes more light???
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 7 лет назад
If you compare single chips side by side, the bigger of the two LED's will produce more light.
@rich1051414
@rich1051414 6 лет назад
5050 will output more light for the surface area, but the 3528 will have less 'dotted line effect', as well as offering greater resolution(higher pixel density) when used for LED displays.

Is it possible to put these strips as lighting for whole house? and which would be better for maxium efficency
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 7 лет назад
Hello Tino, yes it is definitely possible, and there are so many color temperature options I feel it would be ideal, and they consume less power as well. If you have any further questions please email me rj@sirs-e.com and I can help you with some recommendations.

Which one would be brighter given the same k temperature being one has more leds per netter I believe you said
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 9 лет назад
Hello 131kidflash, thank you for watching our video and for your question. Normally, the higher the K temperature, you get more efficiency (lumens per watt).

Can I first put 3528 for 5 meters, then connect 5050 for another 20 meters?
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e
@LEDlightsDMXcontrols_sirs-e 7 лет назад
The only way you can make a continuous run like that is by accounting for voltage drop, and using the proper booster amplifiers, or powering the strips directly. You will need to check on the power consumption of you LED strips.
