As promised here is the Catch up video and slide show for the roof chopped 1951 Chevrolet Fleetline Deluxe known as Area 51. This is not really a how to video. Just kinda giving a description of how did mine.
2020 Lockdown was a weird and surreal time for everyone no doubt, Having a new project ready to go was a great way to keep busy and positively distracted.
Here in New Zealand our main lockdown started the end of March 2020 and being that I work in close quarters with my clients, I couldn’t work at the studio for 7 weeks!!
Fortunately I had not long taken ownership of this 51 Fleetline and had already started to create a plan of what I wanted to do with it. I’ve always wanted to do a roof chop and I figured since I wanted to build a sled the 51 was gonna be my first (maybe last). I’ve since found out that chopping these fast back style aero sedans is one of the trickier chops to do. Who’d have thunk it.
Subscribe and stay tuned for more updates on the Area 51 project I’ve got heaps to do on this.
Cheers
Dave

That's some balls on ya, doin' a Fleetline for your first chop. If you don't get that deck lid just, the chop looks wrong. Congrats- I hope we get to see the car finished. Oh... although I'm a "skirts" kinda guy, I really like what you did with the rear wheel wells.

Cheers man. To be honest it was more ignorance on my part with the chop. I didn’t realize that these were considered one of the harder chops to do at the time. The trunk lid was probably tricky to do that the main body part.

Great work, love the height of the roof. You might have already done it, but if you haven't. The Seatbelt mounts in the B-pillar... You need 6"Sq. So a 1"wide 6" long piece of 1/8" or thicker plate with a 7/16"-20 bolt welded to the back of it behind a hole will make a perfect mount. Just drill the hole where you want it, a few holes above and below and slide the plate up till you can put a bolt in. The weld through the holes in the sheet metal. Just round the edges of the plate, so it won't tear out in an accident.

Cheers Jon. I haven’t done that part yet. Kinda been ignoring it haha. So do you mean plug weld up the center and stitch it all the way around the outer edge of the plate?

looks good, my next chop is a '41 Oldsmobile fast back, similiar to this car of yours. I am interested in more details on panel reconstruction at the sail panels to quarter panels area and fitting the trunk lid. If you have those it would be great to see those areas of work. Thank you.

Thanks man. I only have photos of when I did the chop. I wasn’t making videos at that stage. The chop itself wasn’t too bad. The truck lid was a different story. I think I go over it in some later videos in a bit more detail.

I think I explain the truck lid a wee bit in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P1sVvdSfhCQ.html

Great job on the chop, nice smooth flow. Can only imagine the work modifying the deck lid to fit. Regard the B post trim / shoulder belt anchors - The Chrysler Sebring convertibles had the belts built into the seat backs for a few years. Nice clean look, no hassle getting into the back. Hope to see it finished. Pat

Cheers Pat. I’ve since done the upper seatbelts anchours now and finished up the b pillars too. To our spec here in NZ (hopefully). I’ve still got to do the lowers but they’re a simple doubler plate setup.

@@DMACKustoms It was someone's parts car. Chrome is stripped, bumpers, and seats gone, rear window. I have a sbc 400 that I'm building, right at 900 hp. I'll keep the car light. Street to strip, Rat Rod. Should be in the low 9s, or maybe even 8s in the 1/4 mile. The block is a factory block, but forged internals, tricked out Vet heads. Smallish turbo, adds a couple hundred hp. It'd make more power, but I don't want to break this1972 short block.

How much shorter do you think each window is from stock cuz I seen it was already chopped.
@DMACKustoms
@DMACKustoms 3 года назад
It’ll be three inch’s on the front glass. I’m not too sure what I’ll take out of the side glass yet.

I've have been thinking about your question a bit trying to work out in my head what the answer would be, I cut 3 inch out of the A pillar, and 4 out of the C pillar, so that'd make it 3.5inchs approx at the B pillar. S I'm picking the the door glass will be just under 3inchs at the front and 3.5 at the post and the rear quarter glass will be about 3.5 at the post and about 4 at the back corner, I was thinking of making templates out of board and fit them in with the regulators before I cut any glass.
