Hi Hayley, passed my C+E at the first attempt today. Your videos - including this one, in particular- were a big help. Thank you and keep up the good work!
I had yesterday my first driving lesson with an HGV and one thing has been haunting me for the last 24 hrs now: how the hell do I take corners with this thing? glad to see that practice will become intuition over time. my instructor didn't specify that I can use up as much road as I need in order to safely maneuver. After driving over 10 years with a small car, I have the instinct of constantly keeping my lane, but yea, watching you makes sense, you just can't keep every time your lane in a 9 m long truck.
I have to thank you for this video. During the first 3 driving lessons the thing I struggled the most was not to hit the kerb when turning (in my case, right - we drive in the opposite side of the road). I was driving it like a normal car, never crossing into the other side of the road..on narrow roads it was a recipe to kissing kerbs all day long. As I got used to the gear box (4+4 with knock over) and the rest of the lorry I got "extra" time to look at those side mirrors when turning but still, sometimes, I couldn't avoid the kerb. It was driving me crazy. I've had my driver’s license for 11 years now and only touched the kerb once.in the past 2 weeks I had touched it x15. After seeing this video I understood why I was touching the kerb so many times..the mind set for driving this cannot be the same as a normal car, you REALLY need all the space you can get when turning including, sometimes, part of the other side of the road. This was the key. Yesterday I had another lesson (2h) and not once I touched the kerb. A massive thanks for this.
Remember my instructor (when I did Class 1 with rigid and trailer) - saying when turning right., to wait for your shoulders to be in line with the middle of the road you are turning into, before starting the turn.. , as a rough guide 👍🏻
Hi Hayley, started my training Monday with my tests on the Friday. Watch this video Tuesday, my instructor told me Thursday I wasn’t going to pass my test (three times) on the Friday so I watched this video again Thursday night. This morning my instructor still wasn’t confident with my driving. Took the reverse test, 1 shunt and passed. Then took the driving test - no minors, passed. Thanks so much for your videos they really did help me
Top comment, ‘if the road’s there use it’. That sums it up. I think of it like riding my bike, gaining max visibility by staying wide where I can on a left hander, tight in on a right hander👍👍
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It has helped me to pass my class 2 today. No bells or whistles. Just clear concise instructions. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍
I'm currently doing my C+E from car and my first day (yesterday) was all guessing when to turn and didn't make much progress because either I thought I was wider then what I am or it looked like I was going to hit something when turning to my left. It's disheartening on my first day to of had it so stressful. Also I drive way too fast and that causes my cornering to feel stressful and cause prep problems. Glad to know it's not only me that thought I was going to hit something because it looks like I am really close to something when cornering. Good video, I will watch it again a few times before I start again next week.
Love the Honda T shirt. Great little video for the newbies. I was always told to take more than you think you need, you can always give some back but it’s hard to take more.
Yer a good girl Hayley. Love ya for this. It was not just an instructional video of yours, but a virtual ride round mine and your stamping ground. Spotted our local LIDL store, and the route into Wednesfield which I have done many times just lately aboard the #25 bus, even coming via Ashmore Park where most of my family have lived since before I was even born!! You've even shown me the spot where my mum used to work with my late Aunt, the late Jean Mary O'Toole (nee Giddins, 27.05.1942-27.02.2001), right there in Planetary Road from September 1975 to December 1982. You've even driven past the local Fire Station, 254, Bushbury Road where I have just lately helped to run a group there devoted to Autism in adults. That's lovely of ya Hayley. Really love ya for this. You're not just a local girl, you're a good girl and a friend to boot. The best instructional video I've seen of yours in recent months. Love ya. Great stuff, and love hearing from ya. A very good morning.
I enjoyed the video Hailey I'm after my hgv class 2 for the 8 wheel tippers eventually to class 1 bulk tippers I can't wait to get started. I used to be a hospital nurse 20 years now I want to pursue my boy hood dream to become a lorry driver both my granddad and my dad drove them for years it's been in the blood I hope I do OK and that I make to where I want to be in the hgv industry the tippers is what I really want to do it's great to see woman driving them it proves its easier to get into hgv than it used to be hope your grand like your v log
Ahhh fellow community DN here! I quit nursing 3 months ago and just done my first day training in class 2! How are you getting on? Any closer or achieved your dream?
I'm just in the learning stage of my theory test so a long way to go but I'm watching a lot of your video's at night after work, the main reasons I like watching your videos are your very good at teaching and I work/drive around the places you drive around so I'm familiar with the roads
thats why your explanations and the way you deliver your video is so well organised and smooth, its because you were a teacher! I m learning so much from your videos already, i have just gotten my HR licence in Perth Australia and leaving my profession which is nursing to heavy rigid driving. Im excited about it too.
With cornering(Class 2) use as much road as you can and on the turn, the back axle wheels should be at the corner away from the kerb when turning left. For turning right, keep left and make a long turn over to the right. If the turn does not look achievable then try again from the opposite direction or try a different junction.
Great vlog . When I started I was cab hopping on agency driving all types of class2. vehicles . Different lengths / Overhangs / Steering locks etc . First 10 minutes or difficult junctions were nervous times but the practice was invaluable especially if the first job was to get it out of a packed yard and put it on a bay with everyone watching . Best advice I had :-" get a few moans if you are slow & check and take your time but it's a lot worse if you hit something "
Superb. I've just given up corporate life to get into trucking. Nervous and excited to be getting into it. Your videos and advice are really helping settle the nerves. Thank you.
Thank you. Good luck getting your licences. It's a good career but you've really got to find something within the industry that you like and it makes the difference. No two jobs are the same 😊
@@TruckDriverHayley wierd...I was also in the teaching world...strange how it all works out. I'm wanting to get into class 1 and do Supermarkets I think. Still, class 2 test on Thursday so one day at a time. Thanks again. Super helpful. 👌
Just passed my C category recently, the instructor I never calmly explained how to work the roundabouts and corners so I took to looking for tips online and came across your channel. You explained it better than they ever could. Thanks Hayley for the vid, helped me a lot 🥳
great video as a bus driver trying to get into hgv i found this video very helpfull.only diiference being is that our steering wheels are behind us, mirrors are our best mates..as i was told
Good to see you back Hayley. Nice video for newbies ! Good simple explanations ( thats the teacher in you ). The way i learned was that the back axle is lazy & will cut every corner, so the front axle has to work extra to compensate. After a while it becomes instinctive and natural & you don't need to watch so hard - just the usual safety checks.....and depending on the truck, check the opposite side for the rear overhang (my current truck has an extra long body on a standard-wheelbase chassis) One other thing I would add......while sweeping wide at junctions & roundabouts be extra vigilant for impatient morons in cars, bikes & cycles that see a gap and make a lunge for it.....because they are often too stupid to work out that a truck needs that extra space to turn
Hi, good to see you back working the camera 📹. Useful vlog, here's to a better MMXXI. Stay safe all and thanks for sharing. Best regards from the Black Country. John.
@@keving9157 No problem, may I suggest, click on the three dots, Edit, select all text, copy, then paste as anew comment. Then go back to delete the original; ask me how I know?. Lol.
Thanks for the free lesson Hayley. 😊 More T junctions please, left and right turns. Glad to see you're becoming a real Trucker with the HUGE elevation of profanities... "Bloody thing"... 🤣
I love driving my class 2 lorry So much fun. I’ve gave people a little freight at temp traffic lights where the works are on the left Coming head on with a car waiting at the red and then turning at the last moment in order not to hit the cones Love it It comes naturally I turn a lorry differently to how I turn a car or a van. It’s just a natural thing
Happy 2021 Hayley .. glad to see you back, dropping gems! I am less than 10 minutes in, and I hope you mention the seating position and late turning because we be sitting on the front wheels
You are a star I am going for my first driving tomorrow. I now believe that I just need to go and start and learn as I go. saeting here scared will not help me.
Finally after a year waiting! I done my 1st day training in class 2! It was great! Scary as I could appreciate how BIG these bad boys are up close compared to just driving past one. I clipped the kerb 2x but my reverse was pretty much on point! I am struggling with corners though, this video helped a lot! I’m soaking in the bath now because I was tense all day driving I’m starting to ache 🤣 I have 4 more days left 🤞 I pass!!! Thanks Hayley!
Welcome back sweetie!! Always happy to see your face show up on my subscriptions!! Love this video. I remember this issue on my one hour test session to see how many lessons I need. Like everyone else, still waiting for my bloody theory tests...next one booked for March but doubt they’ll be open. Glad your safe and sound and can’t wait for the next video.
One point that i don't recall you mentioning bab, is the tail swing when turning right. This was more evident at 21:45 and although it wasn't a issue, it could cause problems if there are larger vehicles on your inside. The whole vlog was superbly put though and has hopefully given wannabe new drivers an excellent input of how to position the lorry during the lessons. Obviously, your instructor is there to give you tips and advice and you will get it wrong at first ( clipping the kerb etc ) but it becomes second nature after a day or so and like you said Hayley, the more you do it, the less you have to think of how to take corners & islands.
Is that because the tail swings into the other lane? If there is something in the way what would you do? Adjust the position or wait for the big thing to pass by before making your turn?
Thanks for taking the time to post. I’ve just past theory and hazard awareness tests. Now booked the training and test unfortunately can’t do it till January. Use to driver buses(10 years ago ) and doing 7.5 ton now so should be able to pick hgv2 up without too much trauma. Now passed my test 1st time.
I trained at a place called flt training they were dreadful and didnt teach me anything like this, i was totally unprepared for my test, my instructor was more interested in using his phone, thanks for this
Good to watch videos like this and see from a drivers point of view. I'm doing my class 2 and failed a 2nd test this week (through my own stupid fault getting in the wrong lane) Every time I went to turn into a road on my lessons it gave me butterflies panicing I won't get in 🤦🏼♀️
My first time today and first lesson on the road ,exactly what you said mirrors, take it slow ,use all the road, Hooe it clicks better next lesson thanks
Hey Hayley. You’re driving the test route what I had to do with GTG Wolverhampton. The Featherstone/Wednesfield route. There are some right tight turns in that area. Straight away I knew that area haha.
Same here ! My was done through British HGV Training Group at Cannock and one of my mates had his done in Aldridge but we both had the tests at Featherstone, so i don't think the route alters much if your test is based there.
Just passed my class 2 test a few weeks ago. Clean run with no minors 👍🏼 I can still hear my instructor saying ‘dominate the road’ I was overthinking things like steering before I started but as soon as I got behind the wheel it just kind of made sense.
@@TruckDriverHayley thanks. I was more shocked at getting no minors than I was about passing. I think it helped that the examiner was really nice, we just spent the whole time chatting so I was very relaxed.
Great videos and very helpful . But here in Dublin doing the lessons on a rigid if you keep too wide whilst turning left you will get marked for this each time as a minor blue x on your test as they say it takes to long to correct yourself and no need to go out so far but I can totally see where you’re coming from Makes more sense because you obviously run the risk of back wheel hitting the path I’ve my test 29th this month 12 hours under the belt but I think the company who is learning me is not the best every time I do a lesson I’m with somebody completely different aswell which I don’t think helps🙈 .
Nice to see you back, reverting to be a teacher eh? When you said use a bit of their road reminded me of something an old driver used to say when cutting across corners "I've paid tax on both sides of the road". All the best.
Well blow me down with a feather, Hello Shell, nice to hear from you. How is the junior trucker? I do hope all is well with you. Is hubby still driving for the old firm? Have not forgotten you, even given you a couple of on screen mentions in my videos. The latest was this week in my Lorry ride along #27 production and so you don't have to watch it all it is at 17.29. All the very best to you and yours.
@@cloudmaker aww bless you hun. Hes doing absolutely fantastic cant believe hes coming up for 8 months. We are fine. Hubby is still going and doing his class 1 training for the company. Hope you are keeping well and staying safe on the roads xx
So glad to hear junior is doing OK hope he has settled into a regular sleeping pattern, as we know some of the toughest times are the early hours when lack of sleep can play silly tricks with your mind. Answering the last remark, the safest place for me is on the road and the tablets are keeping me well.
So many drivers now are full in refusing to deliver in to city centres in a hgv. The complete incompitence of town planners to build in access is making many towns no go delivery areas.
I am thinking to become hgv driver. So far I found ur videos a lot help full. I haven't found big hurdles or issues in the industry. Why people don't want to join?
I'm glad they are helpful for you. They don't want to join because it's expensive to get your licence, the hours are long and most companies want you to sleep in the truck a few nights a week. There are also limited places that are safe to park at night and the facilities at some truck stops are not the best. It's a great job if you love to be at work all day or away from home. If you have a family and want to be home at a decent time every night, it's not a good job.
cars stopping after the while lines is such a pain when driving a truck! Have you ever brushed the curb with the tyre? I know I have. Lorry drivers have to live in the mirrors! Not like in a car where you have the rear view. You can tell a truck driver by how they reverse, using the wing mirrors and not the rear view. Another thing I learned drivin in rural Ireland on narrow roads is to take your time and even if it looks wide enough, go slow and use the cyclops to make totally sure. Better to go slow and not do any damage than risk it and have to stop after hitting something!
