Haha, found this updated version of the tacho operation :-) Manual entry approach on this unit now in there 🙂 Thanks for this, people are rarely trained on these in advance of getting out and about. Particularly if you don't work for one of the more major companies.

Really really really useful!! I passed my class 2 just over a month ago and although you learn about the driving time regs etc they don't actually give you ANY demonstration on how to use the tacho, Did my first bit of driving last Wednesday and really struggled to get my head around it. I start a temp to perm position tomorrow doing wholesale deliveries and I feel far more confident using the tacho after watching this! Great content keep it up

What a wonderful channel this is. I only found it because, at the age of 62, I've been looking into doing Class 2, then Class 1. I've only had 20+yrs to decide on this, having had the provisional category put on my licence twice before (2 x 5yrs), and not following through. Now I've done it again, and passed the hazard/theory tests and am ready for the practical training, just as all the tests and training are suspended for covid lockdowns. What perfect timing! 😒 I haven't watched every film, Hayley, but the ones I have watched I've thoroughly enjoyed. I've been driving 7.5 tonne box vehicles for all those years for a very large organisation, but I've been amazed just how much I've learned from your vlogs. Things I had no experience of or appreciated. And you're so erudite in your presentation and explanation. What a wonderful role model you are to new drivers, especially females. I would guess you were a very good teacher, as if the country can afford to lose good science teachers! Like you, I enjoy my job too, doing local stuff and when one day ends, it ends. The next day is a new experience. It's worth remembering, the bigger the lorry, the bigger the load. I'm surprised how long some of these 'C' class vehicles can be. Artics even longer. When I see a standard length artic come into our yard, I think to myself, that vehicle is three times the length of mine and takes three times the load. 45 containers to my 15. So the driver has all that to load and unload, and much longer distances to drive. Does he get three times the pay? I think not, in fact I know they don't. So we do have alot of drivers with the C+E category on their licence, but avoid those jobs, mainly because they're boring motorway 🛣 work. I think that's where you're coming from, Hayley, and that's what I'm doing too. Paying for my own training, then I can choose what I do. It's just nice to have a complete licence. Incidentally, our largest double stacker can take 98 containers I do believe, so even more work. But it does suit some drivers to do that work, and I often see quite young female drivers bringing these great long things into the yard. They manoeuvre them onto the bays with considerable skill. Practice makes perfect. To highlight some of the most enjoyable parts of your journey, I'd say watching you transform from looking a rather mousy school ma'am and Lady Labcoat in episode 1 to a tough, tattooed trucker, has been quite interesting. And yet, throughout it all, you've been informative and interesting. In many ways, you haven't stopped being a teacher. Maybe you can take the teacher out of the class room, but you can't take the classroom out of the teacher. It, and the lessons, have merely transferred to the lorry cab. That's how it seems to me anyway. I thought the interview with the company boss was quite riveting. When you sat opposite each other in that boardroom, I somehow sensed that poor man was going to get more than he bargained for. A science graduate up against a haulage boss was going to be an interesting encounter, and it didn't disappoint. You were well prepared with very good searching questions, and I was surprised how much information you elicited from him. Lots of interesting stuff I didn't know about or appreciate, and I've been a driver for 20yrs! Perhaps because we're so well looked after, I haven't needed to know. I thought at the end, when he said he thought it was going to be an interview not an inquisition, it kind of said it all. Great fun though. If I were a boss at that company, I'd be looking at you and thinking to myself, this woman can be a great asset to this company. We must use her for better things. Maybe train you up to conduct CPC courses in house, and other training. Hire you out to other companies. I think you'd be very good at it. I've attended many CPC courses, and only one came close to being made interesting, by a woman trainer who wasn't even a driver. Its a skill to be able to put these things over well, especially drivers hours which can be complex to people who have limited experience of them. I think you'd be very good at that. But, they'd have to let you carry on driving too, it's only fair. If you have your C+E licence too, respect to you. You've been there, done it, got the T-shirt. Even us aging , grizzled, grumpy, cantankerous (a right of passage for drivers by the way) drivers can't argue with that! Finally, much as I love music and have just bought a piano to learn to play, I do like your guitar collection. Do you know the 'Zager' make of guitar? They're supposed to be very nice to play. They were created by a man called Denny Zager, who, in the 1960s had a great hit song called 'In, the year 2525'. Zager & Evans they were called. Zager found playing the guitar for long periods hurt the fingers alot. His guitars cured that problem. There's quite alot about it on RU-vid. I do hope you continue with your channel, even through something like Patreon, or through sponsorship. I subscribe to a few Patreon channels. They're very good. Look forward to your next installment.

Hi Kevin, thanks for the wonderful comment. I really appreciate your kind words! I have aspirations to move into CPC training or maybe transport managing, but I'm not sure the company would be interested in training me for those kind of things. It's worth asking I suppose. I don't have my C+E licence at the moment, but I would like to get it in the future. Zager is not a brand I've heard of! I haven't really been into guitars since I was about 13, I just have a dabble every so often. You take care and I look forward to reading more of your comments :)

I think this IS the best basic tachograph instruction video that I have seen ( must be your teacher training). Only comment is: put the Driver card in and select other work then carry out vehicle inspection (10-20 mins). Further more there is much merit as an induction tool for new drivers at your company. "Coming up" as they said on TV : vehicle checks and load security. Great stuff!

This is a great video. When I hit 45 I needed to renew my license but I hadn’t driven for a few years so I didn’t bother, I’d only used my driver tacho card a couple of times, my employer at the time wouldn’t pay towards my CPC & so as I wasn’t actually employed as a driver I just let my class one lapse. Now six years later I’ve just redone my medical & reapplying for my license. I will still have to pay for the CPC unfortunately but I’m looking forward to driving again. It’s been over ten years since I’ve driven an artic but at least I have an idea how the tacho works now 😂
@TruckDriverHayley
@TruckDriverHayley 2 года назад
I'm glad it helped you. You'll have to crack the reversing again too! 😁 I don't know why employers don't pay for the CPC, you can't do it job without it so why isn't it a requirement like providing PPE? 🤔

Good video on digi tacho As an ex agency driver etc On the first digi tacho etc where the 45 mins decreases on the screen etc if a person is doing a delivery for more than 15 mins etc that tacho usually records the driver has had a break etc and for new hgv drivers will be saying i havent had a break etc eg that was a delivery etc so you never had a break etc you ignore the fact that the tacho says you only need 30 mins etc and still make sure you have your full 45 mins break during your day you just need to make a note on print out that the first 15 break was other work and the 15 mins of otherwork was break etc which shows when you took your break etc And for new drivers it is very easy to make a mistake on manual entry etc if not concentrating whilst adding manual entry etc and heres how the mistake happens etc A driver puts their card in etc and remembers to add other work from the day before and so changes the mode from break other work etc adds the few minutes of other work etc but if they forget to end shift and switch mode to rest mode between the two shifts as they go from todays shift back in to yesterdays shift if a driver forgets to add a break the machine still thinks the driver is in the same yesterday shift and if the driver doesnt realise this before they set off for that days shift etc the tacho machine will flash requiring the driver to take a 45 mibute break about 1 houtr in to their shift because the machine in this scenario is still using tge drivers remaining driving time from the previous afternoons shift etc Then their day will go proper pearshaped fast lol Allegedly

HI Haley nice comprehensive video, just a couple of points. It's important to stress that, when doing a manual entry, the date must be checked to ensure you are recording the entry against the correct date. For example if you ejected the card then had 10 minutes other work before you had a weekly rest. You would need to change the date back to the day you finished work. Also with the VDO/Continental tachograph in the second truck you completed the manual entry and said "we are now ready to drive". However at that point the manual entry was still being recorded. You can tell this by looking at the driver card symbol, at the time it resembled a square black box (next to the mode). It's only when the full driver card symbol is displayed that you can drive away, otherwise the manual entry might be lost. The full driver card symbol looks like a door with a window (but you probably knew that). But like I say very comprehensive and easy to understand.
