530 Hz Whelen 4004 Siren + Voice Columbus, OH 9-2-15

Siren: Whelen WPS 4004, 2.3 RPM, 530 Hz
Town: Columbus, OH (Franklin County)
Location: Fire Department #6 next to Walgreens and CVS
Test Time: Every Wednesday 12 PM (Voice on 1st Wed)
Cycles: Two 23 second blasts, plus 4 voice messages
Other notes: I was right on my prediction that this was the 530 Hz Whelen (not 517 Hz as said in the video) heard from Minerva Park. This is a very uncommon tone and is only heard on a few different Whelens across the country. It may have been an experimental tone, especially when you listen at 1:40 it does seem to clip a lot.
Anyways, I also managed to get the tones for the county and got to hear the voice message from the siren and from my scanner.
We still also have not pinpointed the dual tone. I'm beginning to think it could have been the Whetstone Park one heard from really far away, but I don't know. I'll keep trying other ones nearby to see if they're it or not.

True especially in some videos where it plays a b flat note (possibly 465 hz is the hertz frequency of B flat note)

Sounds like a Elektror S4a, because it has 530 Hz, too.

That's gotta be rare. I've never heard a 530hz Whelen before. It kinda sounds under powered. BTW, I think I'm going to record an ambience from my school this Wednesday. My school is in Westerville, and if I hear the dual tone siren, I will let you guys know where I think it's coming from.

tkovack1 ok. any digital siren (speakers) that is underpowered would make it quieter and would not effect the tone at all. the only way to effect the tone is to mess around with the tone card (I can't remember the name)

I remmber when I was little I was scared of tornados now I love them, I also remmber when they did voice back then now they only do the 2 cycles of alert no voice cause the dude that did the voice retired

Ooh! A 530hz Vortex! That's awesome! And rare. Also, did anyone else notice how much clipping there was in the alert? Normally i would blame bad drivers, but in this case, it would be the 530hz tone chip right? Since this is like, the only one.

Actually, it's a 4004. If it were a vortex, it wouldn't have voice capabilities.

You have a map of the Franklin County system? Very cool. I had been trying to put a map together and gave up. I do have a map of many of the T-Bolt locations that I've put together from personal knowledge and help. Several were building mounted, to my surprise.

There is a confirmed dual tone Whelen at whetstone park. There are videos of it on RU-vid. unless you think you hear another one.

+JMAN123436 There was a dual tone heard from a Westerville 4004, but the Whetstone Park one is 8 miles away from that, so I don't think it's that one. I'm gonna keep trying different sirens in the Westerville area for a while and hopefully I can find it.

i think someone adjusted the tone potentiometer on the controller board and changed the frequency.

I can hear the dude on the microphone on the radio so I don't think the voice function is pre recorded

Do you happen to have a picture of the controller? Like we can identify what it is? I tried contacting Whelen about this asking about the Hz level and they said that the siren most likely has an older ESC864 siren controller that contains their analog tone generator. They also said that over time the frequency of the siren tone can drift as the capacitors in the circuit age. The frequency can be corrected back to 500 Hz with the turn of a potentiometer. Although for some reason, I happen to have too much of a hard time finding that easy to believe.

Siren1000T I believe it's one of the earlier 560 Hz 2020 controllers that dropped in pitch. The windup doesn't sound like an 864.
