546 - Were Gen II & III Pokemon Meant to be in Rumble?? Unused Content/The Story of Weekend Edition 

Being around for all of these discoveries was one thing, but seeing Weekend edition become a reality was something I never thought would actually happen! Glad everyone else can see how much went into it - PS: absolblogs with a man bun seems unstoppable

I expected this video to be a fun ride full of knowledge and wisdom yet here I am thinking about those poor orphan Bonsly... Awesome video Matt, amazing editing as always. Somewhere, someplace, there is a Rumble developer proud of you for showing all the unsued and what could have been content.

Dang, I feel so sorry for the guy that carried over the formula for the Spinda forms to Rumble, only for it to go unused 😅

It’s sad that the file size might have been what killed the gen 2 and 3 mons in the base game. Makes me wish the original Rumble would have gotten an enhanced physical release instead of a few less good sequels.

15 seconds into this video, on the 4th reset of the night (estimated 1.5x odds total), I found my first ever shiny uncatchable pooch while hunting Treecko in Ruby. Feeling very mixed right now, I have always wanted to eventually find one, but on the other hand I have been looking for that treecko for a while now. Phase two here we go!

A Rumble mod including gen 2 and 3 had always been my biggest dream. Your work doesn’t go unnoticed, and it’s an inspiration for many!

oh my gosh the story behind the octillery model was so much more interesting than I could have imagined. Your persistence with this game is absolutely incredible btw, insane to me that there was so much to know and see still. The fact that the pokemon basically existed but were removed makes me wonder why they never removed the other 2 models tbh, how much further did they make it? surely if they were removing loads of models the pika and octillery model couldn't just have been test content, but actually made it further into development than gen 2 and 3? Anyway would love to see and hear more content about deciphering the code for the game, this reminds me of the decomp projects for various N64 games that have been happening, the code has existed for over a decade to be studied yet needs to basically be deciphered to truly uncover its mysteries!

How did I not come across this video until just now? It's quite amazing that my own (terribly-coded) tool helped with Weekend Edition, glad it helped! Been meaning to give this mod a shot for a while, I really should try it sometime, me and my siblings loved Rumble when we were kids. Also fun fact: AT7View was *not* used for the WiiWare fan translation that got released. That effort started quite a while before I even knew about it (they kept it secret until release), and they relied on scripts of their creation. When I started work on my tool, all that was publicly available was sparse documentation on the AT7 container format. Using just that, and having no prior experience with data compression at the time, I wrote a whole (well, minus the borked recompression lol) program in the hopes that myself or someone else could get a translation effort going, and I wrote in under 3 weeks. It wasn't until a few months afterward that I managed to come across details of the undercover fan translation, learning that my long-term plans were outdone. Soon enough, I did manage to get into contact with people involved with the project, SpecialAgentApe included. For the next couple months after, I was sent periodic updates about the project. Eventually, I was informed they were basically all set for release except for one part--the length of nicknames and team names, which were still at 5 characters. Using the RE-ing progress I made on PMD WiiWare with Ghidra during the time before I knew about the translation project, I was able to gradually find bytes in the games' executables that pieced together full support for longer name entries; I managed to make the games allow 10 characters in nicknames by release, and 8 for team names in an update afterward. With that, I was officially a team member of the PMD WiiWare fan translation, less than a week before it launched. So yeah, great video, loved seeing/hearing about your process RE-ing Rumble, and am quite flattered by learning something I made helped your progress, as did the PMD WiiWare translation as a whole.

This is by far the coolest passion project I love this series and debatably the original is the best Party Game Thx so much for working on this and I’d love to see more in the future

I always love these super info dense videos! They really get my creativity flowing. That focus band octillery is really interesting to me. Reminds me of the octopus from Wano. It'd be cool to see it and the balloon pikachu fully integrated into rumble!

I know I'm a year late but I have a theory about the Spinda fact. I'm wondering if, when developing Rumble, the developers decided to copy and paste some code from My Pokemon Ranch over to Rumble, as the correct patterns would need to be used in MPR as to make sure they lined up when transferred from DPP. It might be a slight reach, but it would also explain all the seperate forms of the Pokemon being accessable including the Arceus forms

Interesting theories and behind the scenes story. In my opinion, they didn't expect how impactful Pokémon Rumble would be and decided to place it at the WiiWare instead giving it a physical release. And they had to cut off gens 2 & 3 implements because like you said, the strict memory space need it to place the game on the store despite the models had already been implemented, hence why some of the code was left out on the final product. Also, there wasn't a main story that we could follow (unless you want to remember that it all started with just a rattata), but its still an enjoyable beat up game with tons of repeatability thanks to our beloved shinies. I don't know how the WiiWare worked since I didn't use it when I had the console but, if it was possible, they could've release a dlc or a physical release with all the pokes from gen 1 to 4 after seeing how approved the game was by the fans. But hey, what's done is done and now we can enjoy those missing features thanks to you and your helping friends either we play it on console or on emulator, and slowly improving it to make one of the most fun games we can play :) Great video Matt and good luck on Rumble Weekend 20, can't wait to begin!

It hurts that I never played Rumble and Ranch. Had not Wii at the time, now have a Wii, but the online is dead. Rumble especially looks like an amazing game tho and I enjoy all the video's on it :) You did amazing work with this one, congratulations! You made lots of people happy :D
